<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Multi-channel Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Se<SUB>3</SUB> thin films were grown by combining molecular beam epitaxy and atomic layer deposition. High-resolution transmission electron microscope images showed that c-axis oriented Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Se<SUB>3</SUB> grew on amorphous Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> even after multiple stacking. While the surface morphology degraded for the upper layers, each layer was electrically similar. The electrical transport measurements showed that the weak anti-localization effect was quantitatively enhanced upon increasing the number of Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Se<SUB>3</SUB> channels. <P>The aim of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for poor semen quality in infertile men. We searched for relevant trials registered up to May 2013 in 14 databases. We selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared acupuncture, with or without additional treatment, against placebo, sham, no treatment, or the same additional treatment. Two reviewers independently performed the study selection, data extraction, risk of bias and reporting quality appraisal. Risk of bias and reporting quality were appraised by the Cochrane risk of bias tool, the consolidated standards of reporting trials and Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture. The outcomes were sperm motility, sperm concentration, pregnancy rate, and adverse events. Pregnancy was defined as a positive pregnancy test. Four RCTs met the eligibility criteria. Acupuncture increased the percentage of sperm with rapid progression (mean difference - 6.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 4.38–8.32, <I>P</I>< 0.00001) and sperm concentration (mean difference - 6.42, 95% CI: 4.91–7.92, <I>P</I>< 0.00001), but these two outcomes were substantially heterogeneous among the studies (<I>I</I><SUP>2</SUP> = 72% and 58%, respectively). No differences in pregnancy rate were found between acupuncture and control groups (odds ratio 1.60, 95% CI: 0.70–3.69, <I>P</I>= 0.27, <I>I</I><SUP>2</SUP> = 0%). No participants experienced adverse events. The current evidence showing that acupuncture might improve poor semen quality is insufficient because of the small number of studies, inadequacy of procedures and/or insufficient information for semen analysis, high levels of heterogeneity, high risk of bias, and poor quality of reporting. Further large, well-designed RCTs are required.</P>
Graphitic carbon growth on crystalline and amorphous oxide substrates using molecular beam epitaxy

<P>We report graphitic carbon growth on crystalline and amorphous oxide substrates by using carbon molecular beam epitaxy. The films are characterized by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The formations of nanocrystalline graphite are observed on silicon dioxide and glass, while mainly <I>sp<SUP>2 </SUP></I>amorphous carbons are formed on strontium titanate and yttria-stabilized zirconia. Interestingly, flat carbon layers with high degree of graphitization are formed even on amorphous oxides. Our results provide a progress toward direct graphene growth on oxide materials.</P><P><B>PACS</B>: 81.05.uf; 81.15.Hi; 78.30.Ly.</P>

<P>Direct graphene growth on insulating substrates is of great importancefor graphene electronics. Limited accomplishments by using molecularbeam epitaxy have been demonstrated on substrates of hexagonal symmetry.For comparison and further progress, we study the growth of graphiticcarbon on cubic MgO substrates. Raman spectra clearly show <I>D</I>, <I>G</I>, and 2<I>D</I> peaks, confirmingthe formation of nanocrystalline graphite. The degree of graphitizationis comparable to those of carbon layers grown on hexagonal substrates.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy proves the dominance of carbon sp<SUP>2</SUP> bonding, and transmission electron microscopy reveals nanometer-scaleclusters directly. The flatness and the homogeneity of graphitic carbonon MgO(100) are also beneficial to potential applications of heterostructurescontaining graphitic carbon. Graphitic carbon grown on fluorides by molecular beam epitaxy

<P>We study the growth mechanism of carbon molecules supplied by molecular beam epitaxy on fluoride substrates (MgF<SUB>2</SUB>, CaF<SUB>2</SUB>, and BaF<SUB>2</SUB>). All the carbon layers form graphitic carbon with different crystallinities depending on the cation. Especially, the growth on MgF<SUB>2</SUB> results in the formation of nanocrystalline graphite (NCG). Such dependence on the cation is a new observation and calls for further systematic studies with other series of substrates. At the same growth temperature, the NCG on MgF<SUB>2</SUB> has larger clusters than those on oxides. This is contrary to the general expectation because the bond strength of the carbon-fluorine bond is larger than that of the carbon-oxygen bond. Our results show that the growth of graphitic carbon does not simply depend on the chemical bonding between the carbon and the anion in the substrate.</P>
Ni particle surface descriptor to enhance roughness of Ni internal electrode in MLCCs

The uniform and continuous nickel internal electrode is crucial in high capacity and highly reliable multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). However, the mechanism and the key factors that affect the roughness of the electrode have not been investigated thoroughly. Thus, seeking suitable descriptors that describe the most influential element which decides the roughness is required for the logical design of the Ni paste. In this study, we analyzed the surface of nickel powders and compared their electrode roughness in the aspects of the surface carbon species on nickel nanoparticles. As the increase in the relative C–O/C–C and C=O/C–C ratios, the relative electrode roughness of C-Ni-1, C-Ni-2, C-Ni-3, and C-Ni-4 increased from 1.00, 1.29, 1.54 to 2.51. Thus, low contents of C–O and C=O on the surface of Ni particles could improve the uniformity of the electrode. This study suggests a valuable perspective to reveal the decisive component to build the optimum surface of nickel nanoparticles for uniform internal electrodes in MLCCs.
