Wangkarra: communication and the verbal arts of Australia’s Western Desert

Inge Kral,Jennifer Green,Elizabeth Marrkilyi Ellis 국립민속박물관 2019 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.14 No.-

In this paper we situate the verbal arts of the Ngaanyatjarrapeople of the Western Desert of Australia within thediscourse surrounding the UNESCO concept of IntangibleCultural Heritage. We describe the rich heritage of oraltraditions that exist in the Ngaanyatjarra region, how theyemerged, how they are being sustained and the forcesof change that reveal their fragile state today. We givean account of the Western Desert Verbal Arts Project, adocumentation project that has, since 2010, collected, recorded and archived a spectrum of practices includingoral narratives, sand storytelling, alternate sign languageand special speech styles. These practices are embeddedin a speech community where the everyday indigenousspoken language is also considered endangered. Weconsider ways to not only safeguard these rarefied andextremely fragile verbal arts traditions, but also to bringthem to the fore as an integral aspect of the living heritageof the Ngaanyatjarra people.

      • Inverse Analysis in Hydroforming of a Refrigerator Door Handle Using MOGA

        Honggang An,Daniel Green,Jennifer Johrendt,Klaus Hertell 한국소성가공학회 2010 기타자료 Vol.2010 No.6

An inverse problem of load path design in tube hydroforming of a refrigerator door handle is presented. The motivation is to inversely analyze the load path for tube hydroforming and verify the applicability of developed algorithms. Several parameters are given as inputs: the material properties of the pre-bent tube, the geometry of the tube and the die. The study also investigates the influence of the coefficient of friction (COF) at two levels: with COF of 0.1 and 0.05. The process parameters with regard to pressure and end feeding are to be determined. An optimization strategy using MOGA was implemented to solve the inverse problem. In order to obtain a quality part without failure, six objectives were calculated to evaluate the forming severity and the final product geometry, namely, fracture/necking, wrinkling, severe thinning, die filling, and the maximum thinning ratio of tube thickness. The MOGA was coupled with finite element analysis (FEA) and used to optimize the load path. To reduce the calculation cost, a surrogate Kriging model was established to replace the FEA, and was updated every five generations. A Pareto optimal solution set was generated after 20 steps and the optimal load path was determined with a minimum thinning ratio. The results were validated by both the FEA simulation results and the comparison of the optimal load path with the actual load paths. It was noted that the thinning ratio was less than 25% for the lower coefficient of friction (0.05) and the maximum stress was far below the forming stress limit. Meanwhile, the tube fully filled the die cavity and no failure occurred.

Safety of Autologous Umbilical Cord Blood Therapy for Acquired Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Children

        Linda S. Baumgartner,Ernest Moore,David Shook,Steven Messina,Mary Clare Day,Jennifer Green,Rajesh Nandy,Michael Seidman,James E. Baumgartner 대한청각학회 2018 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.22 No.4

Background and Objectives: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children is associated with neurocognitive morbidity. The cause of SNHL is a loss of hair cells in the organ of Corti. There are currently no reparative treatments for SNHL. Numerous studies suggest that cord blood mononuclear cells (human umbilical cord blood, hUCB) allow at least partial restoration of SNHL by enabling repair of a damaged organ of Corti. Our objective is to determine if hUCB is a safe treatment for moderate to severe acquired SNHL in children. Subjects and Methods: Eleven children aged 6 months to 6 years with moderate to severe acquired SNHL were treated with intravenous autologous hUCB. The cell dose ranged from 8 to 30 million cells/kg body weight. Safety was assessed by measuring systemic hemodynamics during hUCB infusion. Infusion-related toxicity was evaluated by measuring neurologic, hepatic, renal and pulmonary function before and after infusion. Auditory function, auditory verbal language assessments and MRI with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were obtained before and after treatment. Results: All patients survived, and there were no adverse events. No infusionrelated changes in hemodynamics occurred. No infusion-related toxicity was recorded. Five subjects experienced a reduction in auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds. Four of those 5 subjects also experienced an improvement in cochlear nerve latencies. Comparison of MRI with DTI sequences obtained before and after treatment revealed increased fractional anisotropy in the primary auditory cortex in three of five subjects with reduced ABR thresholds. Statistically significant (p<0.05) reductions in ABR thresholds were identified. Conclusions: TIntravenous hUCB is feasible and safe in children with SNHL.
