Evaluation of Seat Pan Inclination During Sit-to-stand for Development of Elderly Lifting-chair

Objective: The aim of this study is to set the design direction of the lift chair's tilting seat for development. Background: Great attention has been shown to the development of senior friendly product, because of increasing elderly population rapidly in Korea. Therefore, we need to study on sit-to-stand(STS) motion of elderly systematically for developing lift chair that is one of senior friendly products. Method: In this study, we analyzed joint moment(knee, hip) and muscle activity (Erector spinae, Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis) on STS motion of elderly(female, 60~70: 7) and young people(female, 20~30: 7) using 3 dimension motion capture camera, force plate, wireless EMG. Results: The results of muscle activity showed a similar trend but the results of joint moment were a lot of differences between the young and the elderly. Conclusion: The results of knee joint moment suggest the angle(10~30deg)-adjustable seat that can be better than to find the optimal seat's angle. Application: The method and results of this study are expected to develop senior friendly product and verification as well as be available to various application.

Objective: This study is aimed at estimating each muscle strength and EMG in flexion-extension and abduction-adduction motions while exercising the upper body and specifying the correlation between each agonist muscle activity and muscle strength. Method: Based on the previous studies, this research has selected the 10 upper- body muscles that are related to flexion-extension and abduction-adduction motions. Muscle strength and its activity have been measured during an experiment in synchronizing an Isokinetic dynamometer and an EMG. Pearson correlation coefficient has been used for an analysis about the correlation between the muscle strength and muscle activity. Results: 1. The agonists in flexion include: Upper Trapezius, Anterior deltoild, Middle deltoild, Biceps, Pectoralis major clavicular insertion. The agonists in extension include: Posterior deltoid, Tricep long, Infraspinatus, Latissimus Dorsi. The agonists in abduction include: : Upper Trapezius, Anterior deltoild, Middle deltoild, Biceps, Pectoralis major clavicular insertion. The agonists under adduction include: Tricep long, Pectoralis major sternal insertion, Latissimus Dorsi, Pectoralis major clavicular insertion. 2. The results of an analysis of correlation between muscle strength(Nm) and muscle activity(%MVC) in 4 motions(flexion, extension, abduction and adduction) were as follows: ① The result of flexion is significant correlation (acoefficient of correlation: 0.573**), ② The result of extension is weak correlation (0.387*), ③ The result of abduction is significant correlation (0.428*), ④ The result of adduction is significant correlation (0.693**). Conclusion: This research has analyzed the correlation between each agonist muscle activity and muscle strength in the four motions. The results between mean value of agonists' muscle activity and shoulder's muscle strength showed significant correlation but the correlation between each agonist and muscle strength was not showed.

The aim of the current study was to develop a new coding method for smart devices. Though the grasp posture can be regarded as astatic gesture, there are few studies on grasp coding methods compared to those on gesture coding methods. By integrating and extending previous studies, we suggested a new coding method that simultaneously considers ``hand information`` and ``object information``. The proposed new grasp coding method can effectively describe various types of grasp postures by using a 26 x 8 matrix per hand, hence can be used to develop PUIs (Physical User Interfaces) for various products including smart phones
A Design on the Auto showering system of Bed type

Objective: The aim of this study is to design an auto showering system of bed type for old people or bedridden patients. Background: A Rapid growth of older population leads to an increase in the elderly bedridden patients living in senior care centers and hospitals where caregivers have trouble bathing older people with limited ability. So, we need apparatus to help their shower. Method: In this study, based on Anthropometric and researching existing products of showering equipment for experiment was made. And its nozzle position is variable. The nozzle position was optimized by showering test and simulation using showering equipment. Results: The problems of existing product were analyzed and the nozzle position was optimized through showering test. The number, position, spraying angle of nozzle were optimized through showering simulation. The automatic showering system of bed type was designed by considering their results. Conclusion: The most important design element of showering system is the determining position of nozzle and angle of water injection, number of nozzle. It was developed by applying its results through user centered-research. Application: The user centered-research of developing products was able to apply directly to develop automatic bath, showering products etc. Furthermore it was available to apply senior friendly products.
Development on the Auto Showering System Concerning Bed Type for the Elderly

Objective: The aim of this study is to design an auto showering system regarding bed type for old people or bedridden patients. Background: The rapid growth concerning the aging population leads to an increase in elderly bedridden patients living in senior care centers and hospitals where care givers have difficulty bathing older people with limited mobility. Method: In this study, a showering equipment for experiment was based on anthropometric and researching existing products. The nozzle position was optimized by showering tests and simulations using showering equipment. Results: The problems regarding the existing products were analyzed and the nozzle position was optimized through showering tests. The number, position, and spraying angle of the nozzle were optimized through showering simulations. The automatic showering system concerning bed type was designed by considering their results. Conclusion: When designing an automatic showering system, the most important design element involves determining the position of nozzle and angle of water injection and the number of nozzles. The system was developed by applying the results through user centered-research. Application: The user centered-research for developing products was applied directly in order to develop automatic baths, showering products etc. Furthermore, it was also available to be applied towards senior friendly products.
높이 조절 샤워의자의 개발을 위한 설계 가이드라인 분석

고령자에게 있어서 샤워는 삶의 질과 관련된 중용한 행위중에 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 고령자용 높이 조절 샤워의자를 개발하기 위한 설계 가이드라인을 제시하기 위한 것이다. 첫째, 높이 조절 샤워의자를 인체 치수를 적용하여 디자인하였다. 둘째, 기존 해외 제품을 가격, 형상, 기능 등을 분석하였다. 고령친화제품개발의 사례연구는 고령자를 위한 제품개발의 프로세스를 체계화함에 따라 타 복지기구 및 고령자들을 위한 다양한 종류의 생활지원기기뿐만 아니라 다른 관련 산업에도 응용이 가능한 요소 기술을 확보할 수 있었다. The shower to elderly people is an important activity that related to the quality of life. In this study, to develop a height adjustable shower chair for elderly people, firstly, a height adjustable shower chair was designed by applying human dimensions. Secondly, existing international products were analyzed the prices, features, and performance. Thus, the elderly a height adjustable shower chair was developed by ergonomic design procedure of three steps.
