Large Optical Nonlinearity of Highly Porous Silica Nanoaerogels in the Nanosecond Time Domain

The nonlinear optical properties of highly porous silica nanoaerogels with a 0.1 g/cm3 apparent density were investigated using a spatially Gaussian shaped, 8 ns pulsed laser operating at a wavelength of 532 nm with a repetition rate of 10 Hz. Closed Z-scan spectroscopy revealed the negative nonlinearity (or defocusing effect) of the silica nanoaerogels. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility of silica nanoaerogels was estimated to be 9.6 × 10.19 m2/V2 (6.9 × 10.11 esu) from degenerate four-wave mixing measurements. The nonlinear transmittance limiting threshold of silica nanoaerogels was 17 MW/cm2.F
Green Luminescence and Excite State Thermalization in Er-doped Gallium Nitride

The optical properties in the 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 to 4I15/2 channels of Er-doped GaN have been investigated. The GaN:Er was grown on Si substrates by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy. The resulting Er concentration was 2 × 1020 cm−3, and the unintentional oxygen impurity was observed to be 1020 cm−3. Optical spectroscopy revealed that the lifetime decay at the 4S3/2 state was mainly due to a strong thermalization between the 2H11/2 and the 4S3/2 states. The green luminescence (4S3/2 and 2H11/2 ! 4I15/2) eciency at 300 K was much higher than 56 %. Photoluminescence and lifetime measurements with different excitation channels suggest the existence of multiple Er-sites in GaN.

<P>Summary</P><P>Objective </P><P>A clinical challenge is presented by differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients who show increased serum antithyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) level with undetectable thyroglobulin (Tg) and negative radioiodine whole body scan (I-WBS). The aim of this study is to investigate the recurrence in DTC patients with elevated TgAb by using <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG PET/CT (PET/CT) in addition to I-WBS and neck ultrasonography (USG).</P><P>Subjects and design </P><P>A total of 276 TgAb+ patients were enrolled. Recurrence was assessed and compared between TgAb+ and TgAb- patients. TgAb+ patients were further categorized into two groups of 35–140 U/ml (Group A) and 140 U/ml or greater (Group B), according to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Tumoural status was evaluated regarding the TgAb positivity and the degree of increase of TgAb.</P><P>Results </P><P>Thirty-seven (13·4%) of 276 TgAb+ patients were finally diagnosed with recurrence, compared with 21 (13·5%) of 156 TgAb- patients (<I>P</I> = 0·987). There was a correlation between TgAb level and recurrence (<I>P</I> = 0·032). Recurrence was more common in Group B than Group A (27·8% and 9·9%, respectively, <I>P</I> = 0·001). Recurrence was found in 37·5% of 24 TgAb+/Tg- patients who showed a gradually increasing tendency in serial measurements of TgAb. Sixteen cervical foci (21·1%) missed on neck USG and 17 lesions (22·4%) located outside the neck were additionally detected with PET/CT in TgAb+ patients.</P><P>Conclusions </P><P>TgAb plays a complementary role to Tg in the detection of recurrence of DTC. Tumour recurrence was more frequent in patients with elevated TgAb level over 140 U/ml or a trend toward increasing levels. PET/CT could provide additional information to I-WBS and neck USG in detecting tumour recurrence in patients with elevated TgAb.</P>

Single beam femtosecond Z-scan spectroscopy at 775 nm revealed that the effective third-order nonlinear susceptibility and hyperpolarizability of CdSe colloidal nanocrystals near the Bohr radius were 0.7 . 1.0 × 10.22 m2/V2 and 0.18 . 2.0 × 10.44 m5/V2, respectively. The non-resonant nonlinearity increase for CdSe colloidal quantum dots with bigger than average diameters is attributed to their absorption cross-section being larger and their bandgap energy being narrower than those of the quantum dots with smaller sizes.

The light-induced dispersion in noninstantaneous response third-order nonlinear optical materials has been investigated in this work. We find, even far away from resonance, both normal and abnormal dispersions can be generated in third-order nonlinear optical materials, that possess large third-order nonlinearity and finite response time. The large third order nonlinearity and the finite response time are due to the highly dispersive coupling among the pump and the probe beams. This phenomenon may be used to control the group velocity of a light pulse.

<P>OBJECTIVE: The exact prevalence and clinical significance of ectopic thyroid or thyroglossal duct remnant (TGDR) in the general population have not yet been fully determined despite numerous case reports. This study was prepared to assess the prevalence of TGDR in asymptomatic subjects during hypothyroidism after a total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and to clarify the clinical implication. DESIGN: Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy (Tc-scan) of the head and neck before radioiodine ablation therapy and whole-body and pinhole I-131 scintigraphy (I-scan) after ablation therapy were reviewed for 131 consecutive DTC patients with hypothyroidism after a total thyroidectomy. MAIN OUTCOME: Forty-four among the 131 patients (33.6%) revealed an unexpected linear or focal radioactivity at the anterior midline of the neck, suggesting the presence of TGDR. The Tc-scan and pinhole I-scan were concordant in all cases of abnormal midline neck uptake, although the planar I-scan failed to delineate TGDR due to prominent photon scattering in most cases. Preoperative enhanced neck computed tomography scan was performed in 49 patients and showed no evidence of thyroid glandular tissue separated from thyroid gland in midline of the anterior neck except 1 case. The success rate after radioiodine ablation did not differ significantly between the positive and negative TGDR patients. CONCLUSIONS: TGDR can be frequently observed in scintigraphy of hypothyroid subjects after a thyroidectomy, even when clinically unexpected. Therefore, care should be taken not to confuse the tracer uptake by TGDR with metastatic foci in I- and Tc-scans of patients with hypothyroidism after a thyroidectomy for DTC.</P>
Isolated Facial Muscle Metastasis From Renal Cell Carcinoma on F-18 FDG PET/CT

Facial muscle is a very rare site for distant metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We present a 71-year-old man with isolated facial muscle metastasis 12 years after right nephrectomy for RCC. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a soft-tissue mass in the masticator space. F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed a large hypermetabolic lesion in the right masticator space without other hypermetabolic lesion in the whole body. Subsequent biopsy and histologic study confirmed metastatic cancer from RCC.

Rituximab-Induced Pneumonitis on F-18 FDG PET/CT in Patient With Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Pulmonary drug toxicity is increasingly being diagnosed as a cause of acute and chronic lung disease. We report a case of drug-induced pneumonitis after R-CHOP therapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma in which a follow-up examination F-18 FDG PET/CT showed some patchy consolidations and ground-glass opacities with diffuse FDG uptake in both lungs. Even though antibiotic management was not effective, after treatment with prednisolone the patient improved dramatically. Repeated conventional chest CT showed only minimal residual linear fibrotic opacity. After chemotherapy was changed to CHOP, complete remission was achieved without any pulmonary lesions.
