Spore production mechanism of selected lignicolous basidiomycetes was inhibited by soaking their sporocarps in water for varying periods. Depending on the duration of immersion, some species resumed spore discharge, while in others it was completely ruined. This was related to the nature and consistency of these sporocarps. All the species studied absorbed water quite readily into their sporocarps. The loss of this water through dehydration was more rapid in smaller and delicate species than the bulky and robust ones.

<P>In order to increase the availability and affordability of radioimmunotherapy of refractory or relapsed non-Hodgkins lymphoma, we developed and evaluated radioiodinated rituximab in an ongoing physician-sponsored Phase II Clinical Trial. The chimeric 1gG(1) anti CD 20 monoclonal antibody rituximab was radiolabeled with iodine-131 using a modified Chloramine T method with high radiochemical purity (98% +/- 0.82) and preservation of immunoreactivity. All patients received therapeutic loading doses of unlabeled rituximab (375 mg/m(2)) immediately prior to administration of tracer (200 MBq (131)I) or therapy (1.7-4.3 GBq (131)I) activities of (131)I-rituximab to provide additive immunotherapy and enhance tumor uptake of the radiolabeled antibody. Objective response rate (ORR) was 71% in 35 patients with a median follow-up of 14 months (range 4-28 months). Complete remission (CR) was achieved in 54% of patients, with median duration 20 months. Toxicity evaluation included an additional 7 patients followed for at least 3 months. Tracer dosimetry studies were performed in each patient and the whole body radiation absorbed dose was limited to a mean prescribed dose (MPD) of 0.75 Gy. Myelosuppression was reversible and in only 2 of 42 patients was grade IV hematological toxicity observed. No hemopoietic support was required in any patient. There was no instance of hemorrhage or infection in this group of patients in each of whom individual prospective dosimetry was performed prior to (131)I rituximab radioimmunotherapy for relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkins lymphoma.</P>

Purpose: We compared the degree of pelvic floor symptom improvement between pessary use and prolapse surgery. Materials and Methods: Pessary-naïve women who elected prolapse surgery were enrolled and used a pessary preoperatively (for ≥7 days and ≤30 days). Pelvic floor symptoms were assessed at baseline, after pessary use, and at 3 months postoperatively. The primary outcome was concordance in the degree of symptoms improvement between pessary use and surgery, as assessed by Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I). Secondary outcomes were related to prolapse specific symptoms on validated questionnaires (POPDI-6, PFIQ-7). The McNemar test was used for comparisons of discordant pairs for comparisons of the PGI-I ratings after pessary use and surgery. Results: Sixty-one participants were enrolled (March 2016 through April 2019) and 58 patients used a pessary. Mean±standard deviation age was 60.7±10.7 years; 24.1% had prior hysterectomy, and 13.8% had prior prolapse surgery. While both treatments demonstrated symptomatic improvement, concordance in the degree of overall improvement on the PGI-I score was poor (n=40); responses significantly favored more improvement postoperatively (p<0.001). Pessary use and surgery were associated with significant improvements in prolapse symptoms from baseline on POPDI-6 (both p<0.001) and POPIQ-7 (pessary, p=0.002; surgery, p<0.001). The degree of improvement was larger postoperatively compared to post-pessary use on POPDI-6 (p<0.001) and PFIQ-7 (p=0.004). Conclusions: Both pessary use and surgery significantly improved pelvic floor symptoms from baseline. However, concordance in degrees of improvement between these treatments was poor, with more favorable outcomes after surgery for prolapse symptoms.

We describe new techniques for determining spins and parities of neutron resonances which have resulted in large improvements over previous methods. These advances have made it possible, for the first time, to obtain reduced-neutron- and total-radiation-width distributions separately for resonances of different spin and parity in odd-A target nuclides. Using these new as well as previous data, we show that neutron distributions sometimes are significantly different from the Porter-Thomas distribution assumed by the nuclear statistical model. Furthermore, we show that the radiation-width distributions often are substantially different than predicted by the nuclear statistical model using standard level densities and photon strength functions. These differences could have significant impact on astrophysical reaction rates calculated using the statistical model.

Glycan recognitionleading to cell-cell interactions, signaling, and immune responses is mediated by various glycan-binding proteins (GBPs) showing highly diverse ligand specificities. We describe here a rapid glycan immobilization technique via 4-hydrazinobenzoic acid (HBA)-functionalized beads and its application to high-throughput screening of miniature pig kidney N-glycan-binding proteins by using a mass-spectrometric approach. Firstly, total N-glycans from membrane glycoproteins derived from specific pathogen-free miniature pig kidney were qualitatively and quantitatively identified by MALDI-TOF, negative ion ESI MS/MS and normal-phase HPLC (NP-HPLC) combined with exoglycosidase digestion. Over 100 N-glycans, including sialylated and neutral types, were identified. Without any derivatization steps, the characterizedpig kidney N-glycans were directly immobilized on to HBA-functionalized beads and subsequently used to identify GBPs from human serum. This screening method showed remarkable performance for identifying potential GBPs closely involved in pig-to-human xenograft rejection mediated by human serum, including antibodies, cytokines, complement components, siglec, and CD antigens. Thus, these results demonstrate that the GBP screening method was firmly established by one-step immobilization of the N-glycans on to microsphere and highly sensitive mass-spectrometric analysis.
Neutron Cross-Section Measurements on Structural Materials at ORELA

Neutron capture experiments, using isotopically enriched and natural samples of chromium and titanium, were performed on flight paths 6 and 7 at the 40 m flight station of ORELA. The experimental data were acquired using a pair of deuterated benzene detectors employing the now well-established pulse-height-weighting technique. These data were complemented by new total cross-section measurements where no useful previous data were available.

<P>The immunogenic nonhuman carbohydrate sequences in membrane proteins from porcine kidney were identified and characterized using MALDI-TOF MS and ESI-QTOF-MS. The MALDI profile, investigated by incubation with exoglycosidases, showed a series of about 40 carbohydrates that were identified as high mannose glycans (Man<SUB>3–9</SUB>GlcNAc<SUB>2</SUB>) and complex bi-, tri-, and tetra-antennary glycans with and without core fucose. The antennae of many of the complex glycans were terminated with α-galactose residues, with the numbers of these residues ranging from one up to the number of antennae. Negative ion ESI-MS/MS spectra confirmed the location of the α-galactose residues on the ends of the antennae. This total glycan profile of the membrane proteins from porcine kidney will thus provide important information for the study of molecular interactions between antigenic carbohydrates and proteins in xenotransplantation.</P>
