Evaluation of the Marine Alga Ulva rigida as a Food Supplement: Effect of Intake on Intestinal, Hepatic, and Renal Enzyme Activities in Rats

        Cristina Taboada,Rosendo Millán,Isabel Míguez 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.1

The use of seaweeds as a food is more widespread in Eastern than in Western countries, although demand for these plants has increased in the West because their possible usefulness as dietary supplements. However, very little is known about the effects of regular consumption of algae. The aim of the present study was to determine the composition of Ulva rigida and to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of the diet with 10% alga for 4 weeks on dietary intake, growth, protein efficiency ratio, diet conversion ratio, and some organ weights in growing male rats. We also studied the effect of inclusion of the alga in the diet on intestinal, hepatic, and renal enzymatic activities. U. rigida was found to be a good source of protein and carbohydrates. Food intake was higher in the U. rigida group than in the control group, but ingestion of alga did not have any effect on the other trophic parameters. The intestinal disaccharidase and leucine aminopeptidase activities were lower in rats fed with alga than in control rats, but γ-glutamyl transpeptidase activity was higher in the kidneys of alga-fed rats than in control rats. U. rigida contains high amounts of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals and low amounts of lipids. Analysis of the amino acid composition revealed good-quality protein. The addition of alga to the diet inhibited disaccharidase activities, which suggested that alga consumption could be useful in some chronic disorders associated with pertubations of glucose homeostasis caused by carbohydrate absorption.

Microbial diversity and biochemical profile of aguamiel collected from Agave salmiana and A. atrovirens during different seasons of year

        M. Isabel Enríquez-Salazar,Fabiola Veana,Cristóbal N. Aguilar,Iliana M. De la Garza-Rodríguez,Mercedes G. Lo´pez,Olga M. Rutiaga-Quiñones,Jesú s A. Morlett-Chávez,Raúl Rodríguez-Herrera 한국식품과학회 2017 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.26 No.4

Aguamiel is a beverage produced by some Agave species that is consumed in its fresh or fermented form. Despite its uses and popularity, seasonal effects on its microbial and chemical profiles are unknown. In this study, using aguamiel collected from A. salmiana and A. atrovirens during different seasons, we identified microorganisms by sequencing the 16S and 18S rDNA genes and determined their chemical profiles. In total, 49 microbial strains were identified (38 bacteria and 11 yeasts). The highest richness and biodiversity were observed during winter and summer. Different lactic acid bacteria and yeast genera with potential industrial applications were identified, such as Acetobacter, Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, and Clavispora. The analysis of the chemical profiles indicated the presence of maltooligosaccharides and fructooligosaccharides, which are associated with human health improvements, during spring in Agave aguamiel. Aguamiel can be used in the food industry due to its microbiological and chemical profiles.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis in Polymedicated Patient Treated With Radiotherapy

        Remedios Pérez-Calderón,M. Angeles Gonzalo-Garijo,Silvia Corrales-Vargas,Gloria Jiménez-Ferrera,Isabel Rodríguez-Nevado,Mario Díaz-Delgado 대한천식알레르기학회 2015 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.7 No.2

Temozolomide is an oral alkylating agent indicated for the treatment of patients with glioblastoma multiforme concomitantly with radiotherapy andsubsequently as monotherapy treatment. We report the case of a patient who developed toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) while she was beingtreated with chemoradiotherapy and several drugs. Cutaneous tests were performed with the drugs involved with negative result. Although the occurrenceof TEN contraindicates suspected drug readministration, we based the decision to perform the controlled administration of temozolomideon the following reasons: (1) the poor prognosis of the underlying disease, (2) the lack of therapeutic alternatives, (3) the suspicion that other drugstaken by the patient simultaneously may be responsible (as anticonvulsants and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole [TMP-SMX]), and (4) temozolomidewas the first choice for treating the patient’s disease. The administration of a cumulative dose of 60 mg of temozolomide caused a slight skin reaction. Given this result, we conducted controlled administration of other drugs involved. Dexamethasone, codeine, omeprazole and levetiracetamwere well tolerated. However, TMP-SMX produced a similar reaction to that caused by temozolomide. In conclusion, we present the first case ofTEN induced by temozolomide and TMP-SMX associated with cranial radiotherapy confirmed by controlled administration. Radiotherapy in combinationwith these drugs could have favored TEN, as some authors have postulated, but we cannot prove this.
