Topical Wound-Healing Effects and Phytochemical Composition of Heartwood Essential Oils of Juniperus virginiana L., Juniperus occidentalis Hook., and Juniperus ashei J. Buchholz

        Ibrahim Tumen,Ipek Su¨ntar,Fred J. Eller,Hikmet Keles,Esra Ku¨peli Akkol 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.1

Ethnobotanical surveys indicated that in the traditional medicines worldwide, several Juniperus species are utilized as antihelmintic, diuretic, stimulant, antiseptic, carminative, stomachic, antirheumatic, antifungal, and for wound healing. In the present study, essential oils obtained from heartwood samples of Juniperus virginiana L., Juniperus occidentalis Hook. and Juniperus ashei J. Buchholz were evaluated for wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities by using in vivo experimental methods. The essential oils were obtained by the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction method. Linear incision and circular excision wound models were performed for the wound-healing activity assessment. The tissues were also evaluated for the hydroxyproline content as well as histopathologically. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the essential oils, the test used was an acetic acid-induced increase in capillary permeability. The essential oil of J. occidentalis showed the highest activity on the in vivo biological activity models. Additionaly, the oil of J. virginiana was found highly effective in the anti-inflammatory activity method. The experimental data demonstrated that essential oil of J. occidentalis displayed significant wound-healing and anti-inflammatory activities

A practical jointed approach to transient hyperbolic heat conduction of FGM cylinders and spheres

Nihat Can,Ibrahim Keles 대한기계학회 2023 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.37 No.3

In this study, a practical jointed approach of hollow cylinder and sphere shape functionally graded material (FGM) is considered. Non-Fourier hyperbolic heat conduction method is used. The FGM materials consists of a mixture of ceramic and metallic materials that shows exponential variation in the radial direction. First, the problems are transformed to the Laplace domain form. After that complementary functions method (CFM) is preferred, yielding the solution appropriately that the Durbin’s numerical inverse Laplace transform method is used to transform to the real space. The transient dynamic responses of temperature and heat flux are examined with respect to specific inhomogeneity parameters and various relative temperature changes. Different plots are produced in order to emphasize the correlation of the temperature distribution and beside this heat flux between changing time and also material properties. In order to verify the results in this study, a comparison was made with the existing solutions obtained in the literatures.

A unified method for stresses in FGM sphere with exponentially-varying properties

Kerimcan Celebi,Durmus Yarimpabuc,Ibrahim Keles 국제구조공학회 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.57 No.5

Using the Complementary Functions Method (CFM), a general solution for the one-dimensional steady-state thermal and mechanical stresses in a hollow thick sphere made of functionally graded material (FGM) is presented. The mechanical properties are assumed to obey the exponential variations in the radial direction, and the Poisson’s ratio is assumed to be constant, with general thermal and mechanical boundary conditions on the inside and outside surfaces of the sphere. In the present paper, a semi-analytical iterative technique, one of the most efficient unified method, is employed to solve the heat conduction equation and the Navier equation. For different values of inhomogeneity constant, distributions of radial displacement, radial stress, circumferential stress, and effective stress, as a function of radial direction, are obtained. Various material models from the literature are used and corresponding temperature distributions and stress distributions are computed. Verification of the proposed method is done using benchmark solutions available in the literature for some special cases and virtually exact results are obtained.
