Taking a view of joining by welding the IN713C to SCM440 and SCM415 steel in production of turbochargers, the friction welding process may be utilized as a new approach for joining them instead of other conventional welding processes. It is because the friction welding has more technical and economic advantages than the other welding processes. As this welding process has the characteristics such as curtailment of production time and materials and cost reduction, etc., So, this paper deals with determining the proper friction welding condition and analyzing various mechanical properties of friction welded joints of the super heat resisting steel to alloy steel(IN713C to SCM440 and SCM415). And the in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission during friction welding of IN713C to SCM440 and SCM415 steels with higher confidence and reliability has been much required even though it might be the first trial approach for developing it. Then, this first study aimed to develop the optimization of dissimilar friction welding of heat resisting steels (INC713 to SCM440, SCM415) for turbine, considering on strength and toughness.

In this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality(such as strength, toughness and fatigue life) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of the automobile brake materials of SS41-SUS304 dissimilar steels were performed. It was found as a result that through friction welding of S541 bar (ø 116 ㎜) to SUS304 bar (ø 11.75 ㎜), the optimum welding condition by considering on tensile strength and fatigue life and toughness is the range of heating time of 2-4 see under the number of rotating speed of 2000 rpm, heating pressure of 80 ㎫, forging pressure of 180 ㎫ and upsetting time of 3 sec, When ONZ=6360-8460 counts by Ot₁Z=2-4 see it was identified by experiment that the range of welded joint tensile strength is 410-434㎫ whose joint efficiency is more than 100%, and it was experimentally confirmed that the real-time nondestructive quality(strength) evaluation for the friction welded joints could be possible by acoustic emission technique.

Up to now, most of studies on mechanical properties in friction welded components are about tensile and bending strength. However the fatigue studies on the friction-welded components subjected to repeated stress are not available. The purposes of this study are the development of fundamental design and manufacturing technique of hydraulic valve spool by optimizing of friction welding, and the development of in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission for the bar-to-bar dissimilar friction welding of hydraulic valve spool steels.
