황구침법(黃丘鍼法)을 이용한 고혈압 환자의 혈압강하 효과에 대한 증례보고

Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the antihypertensive effect of Hwang-gu Acupuncture in hypertensive patients. Methods: We measured the blood pressure of the patients who were admitted in the Oriental Medical Clinic of Brother from 25th November 2005 to 27th March 2006. We included the patients only in case of the systolic blood pressure was over 140mmHg or diastolic blood pressure was over 90mmHg, Twenty two patients were treated by Hwang-gu Acupuncture. In order to evaluate the effect of the Hwang-gu Acupuncture, the blood pressure was measured before and after Acupuncture procedure total 4 times, 10times. Results: There were a significant decrease in the systolic blood pressure and significant decrease in the diastolic blood pressure by Hwang-gu Acupuncture 4 times. The effect of Hwang-gu Acupuncture by measurement time on blood pressure were follows: In a systolic blood pressure was gradually deceased significantly from 1st to 4th but diastolic blood pressure was significantly decreased after 2nd and 4th only. Conclusions: These results suggest that Hwang-gu Acupuncture is effective in decreasing the systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

<P>An inability to control cancer cell invasion and metastasis is the leading cause of death in patients with cancer. The present study was performed to determine the anti-invasive effect of Kalopanaxsaponin A (KPS-A) on matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)-meidated invasion in phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells and a murine xenograft model of human OSCC. KPS-A, isolated from <I>Kalopanax pictus</I>, inhibited PMA-induced proliferation and invasion as well as PMA-induced MMP-9 expression and secretion at non-cytotoxic doses. KPS-A treatment reduced the stability of PMA-induced MMP-9 mRNA and inhibited the PMA-induced cytoplasmic translocation of HuR. In PMA-treated cells, KPS-A treatment resulted in the intracellular accumulation of MMP-9 and suppressed Ras-associated binding 1A (Rab1A) expression. KPS-A treatment suppressed PMA-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 and Akt. Furthermore, the oral administration of KPS-A led to substantial inhibition of tumor growth and the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), MMP-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), HuR, and Rab1A in the tumor tissues of mice inoculated with YD-10B OSCC cells. Collectively, KPS-A inhibits the invasiveness of oral cancer by reducing HuR-mediated MMP-9 mRNA stability and Rab1A-mediated MMP-9 secretion <I>via</I> ERK1/2 and phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt. Therefore, KPS-A is a promising anti-invasive agent.</P>

The L-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase gene (Gulo) encodes an essential enzyme in the synthesis of ascorbic acid from glucose. On the basis of previous findings of bone abnormalities in Gulo-/- mice under conditions of ascorbic acid insufficiency, we investigated the effect of ascorbic acid insufficiency on factors related to bone metabolism in Gulo-/- mice. Four groups of mice were raised for 4 weeks under differing conditions of ascorbic acid insufficiency, namely, wild type; ascorbic acid-sufficient Gulo-/- mice, 3-week ascorbic acid-insufficient Gulo-/- mice, and 4-week ascorbic acid-insufficient Gulo-/- mice. Four weeks of ascorbic acid insufficiency resulted in significant weight loss in Gulo-/- mice. Interestingly, average plasma osteocalcin levels were significantly decreased in Gulo-/- mice after 3 weeks of ascorbic acid insufficiency. In addition, the tibia weight in ascorbic acid-sufficient Gulo-/- mice was significantly higher than that in the other three groups. Moreover, significant decreases in trabecular bone volume near to the growth plate, as well as in trabecular bone attachment to the growth plate, were evident in 3- or 4-week ascorbic acid-insufficient Gulo-/-. In summary, ascorbic acid insufficiency in Gulo-/- mice results in severe defects in normal bone formation, which are closely related to a decrease in plasma osteocalcin levels.

<P>Angiogenesis is the process of new blood vessel formation. Excessive angiogenesis is a critical factor in the progression of cancer, macular degeneration, and other chronic inflammatory diseases. When investigating the effects of crude extracts of cultured marine microorganisms, an extract of the cultured Streptomyces sp. YP127 strain was found to inhibit human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) tube formation. Bioassay-guided fractionation and spectroscopic data analyses led to the identification of napyradiomycin A1 (1) as an antiangiogenic component of the extract. Compound 1 inhibited HUVEC tube formation in a concentration-dependent manner. It inhibited endothelial cell proliferation but did not affect human dermal fibroblast proliferation. Compound 1 also suppressed migration and invasion of vascular endothelial cells. In addition, compound 1 suppressed vascular endothelial cadherin expression and increased the permeability of the endothelial cell membrane. These results suggested that compound 1 modulates cell permeability and inhibits the angiogenesis of endothelial cells.</P>
Primary Malignant Pericardial Mesothelioma Presenting as Acute Pericarditis

We report on a 21-year-old man with fever, dyspnea, and pleuritic chest pain. An electrocardiography showed ST elevation in multiple lead and thoracic echocardiography revealed moderate pericardial effusion. He was initially diagnosed with acute pericarditis,and treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and colchicines with clinical and laboratory improvement. After 1 month of medication, his symptoms recurred. An echocardiography showed constrictive physiology and the patient was treated with steroid on the top of current medication. The patient had been well for 7 months until dyspnea and edema developed, when an echocardiography showed marked increased pericardial thickness and constriction. Pericardial biopsy was performed and primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma was diagnosed. Malignancy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent pericarditis.

Radiopharmaceuticals include therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals and diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals. Therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals are administered to the body and ingested at specific organs to detect radiationemitted from the site and to construct an image to diagnose the disease. Diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals areused to treat diseases by killing cells with radiation emitted from radiopharmaceuticals, such as cancer cells,vascular endothelial cells, arthritis, and Alzheimer's disease. The application possibilities of terahertz imagingtechnology for the combination of radiopharmaceuticals and molecular imaging medicine are discussed andexperimental methods are presented. Terahertz imaging is expected to be a powerful technique because ofthe effective piercing feasibility, which enables to perform safe and high resolutive imaging. To investigate theresponse of cell to the terahertz wave, both the pulsed and CW THz wave systems are employed. THz imagingof a rat’s paraffin-embedded epithelial cell with tumor is studied in advance.

<P>Conclusions: Metabolic tumor volume and TLG are independent prognostic factors for predicting PFS and OS in patients with metastatic RCC. Furthermore, MTV and TLG could provide additional prognostic information in patients with clinically high-risk metastatic RCC treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor-targeted therapies.</P>
