<P>We report a surface-dominant Josephson effect in superconductor–topological insulator–superconductor (S–TI–S) devices, where a Bi<SUB>1.5</SUB>Sb<SUB>0.5</SUB>Te<SUB>1.7</SUB>Se<SUB>1.3</SUB> (BSTS) crystal flake was adopted as an intervening TI between Al superconducting electrodes. We observed a Fraunhofer-type critical current modulation in a perpendicular magnetic field in an Al–TI–Al junction for both local and nonlocal current biasing. Fraunhofer-type modulation of the differential resistance was also observed in a neighboring Au–TI–Au normal junction when it was nonlocally biased by the Al–TI–Al junction. In all cases, the Fraunhofer-like signal was highly robust to the magnetic field up to the critical field of the Al electrodes, corresponding to the edge-stepped nonuniform supercurrent density arising from the top and rough side surfaces of the BSTS flake, which strongly suggests that the Josephson coupling in a TI is established through the surface conducting channels that are topologically protected.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2014/nalefd.2014.14.issue-9/nl501481b/production/images/medium/nl-2014-01481b_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl501481b'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Engineering Electronic Properties of Graphene by Coupling with Si-Rich, Two-Dimensional Islands

<P>Recent theoretical and experimental studies demonstrated that breaking of the sublattice symmetry in graphene produces an energy gap at the former Dirac point. We describe the synthesis of graphene sheets decorated with ultrathin, Si-rich two-dimensional (2D) islands (<I>i.e.</I>, Gr:Si sheets), in which the electronic property of graphene is modulated by coupling with the Si-islands. Analyses based on transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electron and optical spectroscopies confirmed that Si-islands with thicknesses of ∼2 to 4 nm and a lateral size of several tens of nm were bonded to graphene <I>via</I> van der Waals interactions. Field-effect transistors (FETs) based on Gr:Si sheets exhibited enhanced transconductance and maximum-to-minimum current level compared to bare-graphene FETs, and their magnitudes gradually increased with increasing coverage of Si layers on the graphene. The temperature dependent current–voltage measurements of the Gr:Si sheet showed approximately a 2-fold increase in the resistance by decreasing the temperature from 250 to 10 K, which confirmed the opening of the substantial bandgap (∼2.5–3.2 meV) in graphene by coupling with Si islands.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2013/ancac3.2013.7.issue-1/nn304007x/production/images/medium/nn-2012-04007x_0002.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn304007x'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Biomineralized N-Doped CNT/TiO<sub>2</sub> Core/Shell Nanowires for Visible Light Photocatalysis

<P>We report an efficient and environmentally benign biomimetic mineralization of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> at the graphitic carbon surface, which successfully created an ideal TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/carbon hybrid structure without any harsh surface treatment or interfacial adhesive layer. The N-doped sites at carbon nanotubes (CNTs) successfully nucleated the high-yield biomimetic deposition of a uniformly thick TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoshell in neutral pH aqueous media at ambient pressure and temperature and generated N-doped CNT (NCNT)/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> core/shell nanowires. Unlike previously known organic biomineralization templates, such as proteins or peptides, the electroconductive and high-temperature-stable NCNT backbone enabled high-temperature thermal treatment and corresponding crystal structure transformation of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoshells into the anatase or rutile phase for optimized material properties. The direct contact of the NCNT surface and TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoshell without any adhesive interlayer introduced a new carbon energy level in the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> band gap and thereby effectively lowered the band gap energy. Consequently, the created core/shell nanowires showed a greatly enhanced visible light photocatalysis. From 2020, Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency has reset the withdrawal time (WT) for veterinary drugs typically used in livestock in preparation for the introduction of positive list system (PLS) program in 2024. This study was conducted to reset the MRL for amprolium (APL) in broiler chickens as a part of PLS program introduction. Forty-eight healthy Ross broiler chickens were orally administered with APL at the concentration of 60 mg/L (APL-1, n=24) for 14 days and 240 mg/L (APL-2, n=24) for 7 days through drinking water, respectively. After the drug treatment, tissue samples were collected from six broiler chickens at 0, 1, 3 and 5 days, respectively. Residual APL concentrations in poultry tissues were determined using LC-MS/MS. Correlation coefficient (0.99 >), the limits quantification (LOQ, 0.3~5.0 μg/kg), recoveries (81.5~112.4%), and coefficient of variations (<15.5%) were satisfied the validation criteria of Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. In APL-1, APL in all tissues except for kidney was detected less than LOQ at 3 days after drug treatment. In APL-2, APL in liver and kidney was detected more than LOQ at 5 days after treatment. According to the European Medicines Agency’s guideline on determination of withdrawal periods, withdrawal periods of APL-1 and APL-2 in poultry tissues were established to 3 and 2 days, respectively. In conclusion, the developed analytical method is sensitive and reliable for detecting APL in poultry tissues. The estimated WT of APL in poultry tissues is longer than the current WT recommendation of 2 days for APL in broiler chickens.
Antibiotic susceptibility of Clostridium perfringens type D isolated from feces of goats

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) may cause diarrhea and enterotoxemia in adult and young livestock, leading to problems in the production and management of farms. Four hundred fecal samples were collected from 25 goat farms located in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in the Republic of Korea. Sixteen C. perfringens strains were isolates from fecal samples, and the isolates were identified as type A (n=11) and type D (n=5). Additionally, α- and ε-toxin genes were detected in 16 and 5 strains by PCR, respectively, and the enterotoxin gene was presented in 2 strains. The antibiotic susceptibility test was performed using the disk diffusion method and E-test method. In the disk diffusion method, ampicillin (n=16) and chloramphenicol (n=15) were highly susceptible to 16 C. perfringens isolates. In the E-test method, ampicillin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and meropenem were susceptible to more than 14 of 16 C. perfringens isolates. This study indicates that administration of antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and meropenem can prevent and treat C. perfringens infections in goats.
Analysis of high-fat diet-induced inflammatory responses in Rhbdf2 knockout mice

This study investigated the characteristics of obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HD) over 13 weeks in Rhbdf2 gene knockout (KO) mice. Forty 7-week-old Rhbdf2 wild and KO mice were used and the mice were divided into 4 groups: Wild-ND (n=10, Rhbdf2 wild mice, normal diet (ND)), Wild-HD (n=10, Rhbdf2 wild mice, HD), KO-ND (n=10, Rhbdf2 KO mice, ND) and KO-HD (n=10, Rhbdf2 KO mice, HD). The relative epididymal fat weight in KO-HD was significantly increased compared with that in KO-ND (P<0.01). The relative liver and spleen weights in KO-HD were decreased compared with those in Wild-HD (p < 0.05) and KO-ND (p < 0.01). The mRNA expression of SOD1 in KO-ND was significantly reduced compared with that in Wild-ND (p < 0.05). In Wild-ND and HD, the mRNA expressions of TNF-α and IL-6 in epididymal fat were significantly increased compared with those in KO-ND and HD (p < 0.01). A significant increase of TNF- α and IL-6 mRNA expression was observed in KO-HD compared with KO-ND (p < 0.01). These results indicated that Rhbdf2 genes may regulate high fat diet-induced obesity damage by anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative roles in fat tissue of mice.
