Monoclonal antibodies against Taka virus, a variant of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), were produced to compare the antigenicites of several avian paramyxoviruses including NDV. It was also used to study the activesite(s) of haemagglutin (HA) and neuraminidase activities of NDV. Five independent hybrid cell lines, which produced monoclonal antibodies against haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) molecule of Taka virus, were established. From the results of the cross haemagglutination-inhibition(HI) test the monoclonal antibodies, the HN molecule of Taka virus seemed to have at least three different antigenic determinats; one was specific for all NDV strain tested, the second was only for Taka virus and the third was for Take virus, Banger and Yucaipa Furthermore the differences in the ratio of HI to neuraminidase-inhibition titers suggested that the active sites involved in HA and neuraminidase activities might be different from each other. However, since each of five monoclonal anitbodies was not especially specific for either HA or neuraminidase, the possibility that a single active site on the HN molecule may be responsible for both activities has not been excluded.

Muscle Fiber Number and Growth Performance of Pigs from Sows Treated with Ractopamine

The goal of the trial was to evaluate the effects of ractopamine (20 ppm in the ration) given pregnant sows during three different pregnancy stages (T1: 25 to 50 d; T2: 50 to 80 d; T3: 25 to 80 d of gestation, and T4: control-no ractopamine) on fetal muscle development (through counts of the number of fibers of the semitendinosus muscle), on the growth and carcass characteristics of the progeny. Forty eight weaned piglets (12 per treatment) were assessed for number of muscle fibers, while performance and carcass characteristics were evaluated on a separate 48 animals (12 per treatment) grown to 100 kg. Animals produced by sows treated from 25 to 50 d of pregnancy (T1) resulted in non-significant increase of 6.85% in the number of muscle fibers in the semitendinosus muscle when compared to animals from the control group. Performance results were significantly different (p<0.05), and animals produced by sows from the T1 group gained more weight during the growth I stage (25 to 50 kg) and during the total period (6 to 100 kg) (991 vs. 903 grams, and 844 vs. 772 grams, respectively) when compared to controls. For carcass characteristics, results showed that animals produced by the T1 group of sows were heavier at slaughter (p<0.05) when compared to the controls (T4) (100.17 vs. 93.09 kg). There was a positive correlation between number of muscle fibers and bodyweights, carcass weights, Longissimus dorsi muscle depth and dressing out (0.80, 0.86, 0.67, and 0.50, respectively). Sows treated with ractopamine between 25 to 50 d of pregnancy produced piglets that performed better and had superior carcass characteristics than those produced by untreated sows. The ractopamine used for pregnancy sows (25 to 50 d) can be indicated as a device to increase the progeny performance.

Production, Cryopreservation and Transfer of Bovine Embryos Cultured in Serum-Free Medium

In vitro embryo culture techniques provide significant contributions not only for a basic research of fertilization and early embryogenesis, but also for a low cost mass production of bovine embryos for transfer, embryo diagnosis, nuclear cloning and the production of transgenic cows. This presentation introduces newly developed serum-free media (IVD101 and IVMD101) that are effective far high yields of transferable embryos of excellent quality from in vitro-matured and fertilized oocytes. Both serum-free media are superior to a conventional serum-containing medium on the increased rates of blastocyst formation, post-thaw embryo viability, and pregnancy after transfer. Furthermore, reduced risks of calf mortality and large calf syndrome are also observed for the serum-free-derived embryos. Serum-derived embryos contain a large number of lipid droplets and immature mitochondria in their cytoplasm that may account for the lower production of transferable embryos and poor embryo quality.

Healthy Japan 21의 목적은 삶의 질을 향상시킴은 물론 노동가능 인구집단의 유병률을 줄이고 건강수명을 연장시키기 위하여, 21세기 모든 일본인들이 더욱 건강하고 행복한 삶을 향유할 수 있도록 국가사업을 활성화하는 것이다. 구체적 목적은 조기사망을 예방하고 건강생활을 향상하는 것으로, Healthy Japan 21의 전략적 기획과정에서 건강수명의 연장을 실현하기 위하여 2010년까지 달성되어야 하는 구체적인 목적들이 또한 제시되었다. 조기사망을 감소시키기 위하여 사고, 암, 자살, 심장병 감소의 중요성을 인식하고 9개의 주요 목표로 영양, 신체활동, 휴식과 이완, 금연, 절주, 구강보건, 당뇨병 예방, 심혈관계질환 예방, 암 예방을 설정하였다. 흡연, 알콜, 식사 그리고 운동과 같은 생활양식은 스트레스, 비만, 고혈압과 같은 위험요인 및 질병관리와 관련이 있으며, 위험요인은 암, 심장병, 구강질환의 발생과 밀접한 관련을 갖는다. 따라서 질병의 발생을 예방하기 위해서는 건강증진과 일차예방이 강조되어야 한다. 일차예방에 중점을 두기 위해서 우리는 전통적인 질병관리의 중점사항인 정기적인 건강검진을 통해 질병 조기발견을 노력을 게을리 하지 말아야 할 것이다. 아울러 의료비 감소, 병상에 있는 사람들의 감소, 사회세의 감소도 또한 달성되어야 하는 사업의 결과로 설정되어 있다. 가장 최근의 Healthy Japan 2000(1998-99)의 평가에 따르면 목표들의 15%가 달성되었거나 초과 달성된 것으로 나타났다. 이 중 아동과 청소년의 사망률의 경우, 1-14세 아동의 사망률은 1987년부터 26%가 감소되어 2000년도 목표인 인구 100,000명단 28명의 사망을 초과 달성한 것으로 평가되었다. Healthy Japan 21의 두 가지 주요 전락은 일반 인구집단을 위한 전략과 고위험 집단을 대상으로 하는 전략으로 구성된다. 개인의 건강한 생환양식으로의 변화를 포함한 우리의 건강증진 노력은 사람 중심으로 개인의 선택을 기반으로 하고 있다. 이러한 노력을 지원하기 위하여, 각 개인이 정보를 갖은 상태에서 올바른 선택을 할 수 있도록 적당량의 올바른 정보를 제공하는 것이 필수적이다. 이와 같은 일본의 건강증진계획은 2000년 3월에 Healthy Japan 21이 설립되었으며, 2000-2002년 사이 모든 현이 자신의 사업계획을 설정하였으며, 2001-2005년에는 약 반수 정도의 지방자치단체들이 자신들의 사업계획을 확정하였다. 건강증진을 이루는 중요한 수단은 파트너 쉽에 있다. 정부조직 뿐 아니라 건강보험 회사, 보건의료서비스 제공자, 교육단채, 대중매체, 사기업, 봉사단체 등을 포함한 건강분야의 조직들은 자신들의 전문적 기술들을 한데 모아 서로 협력하여야 한다. 또 하나의 중요한 수단은 건강 지지적인 환경이다. 개인의 건강증진 노력을 체계화함으로써 지지적인 환경을 조성할 수 있다. Healthy Japan 21에 대한 평가는 2005년에 중간평가가, 2010에 최종평가가 있을 예정이다. 평가결과들은 이후에 진행될 사업의 향상을 위한 기준으로 활용될 예정이다.

Representation of the Ether in Women in Love: In Relation to Ernst Haeckel and Umberto Boccioni

It is in Women in Love that D. H. Lawrence used the word "ether" for the first time. In late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe, the idea of the "ether" played a significant role in reconsidering the nature of the universe. At the time, it was assumed that the universe was filled with the medium called the ether, through which light was propagated as electromagnetic waves. Visible light vibrating through the dark space of the ether gave rise to a new vision of the universe, which was entirely different from the vision explained by Newton`s idea of absolute space and time. The new vision of the universe made possible by the idea of the ether eventually developed into Einstein`s special theory of relativity published in 1905, which explains the universe not as the absolute, but as relative. Lawrence encountered the idea of the ether in Ernst Haeckel`s The Riddle of the Universe, which he read in 1908. He was also familiar with the representation of the ether in Umberto Boccioni`s visual arts. Studying Women in Love in relation to the idea of the ether that both Haeckel and Boccioni pursued will make it clear how ardently Lawrence explored a new vision of the relative world in the cultural climate of his time.

Interactively Instructing a Guide Robot through a Network

In this paper, we propose a remote-interactive mode for a museum guide robot. In this mode, the remote operator can interact with the robot by using voice and gestures through a network. The operator can instruct the robot what to do using nonverbal behaviors such as touching an object on the display screen while saying an instruction. For example, the operator can ask the robot, “Bring this brochure to him,” while first touching the brochure and then the person on the display. The brochure is detected and tracked using the SIFT feature matching between video camera images. After the robot takes the brochure, the robot detects and tracks the person, and then hands it to him to the person.

Electrochemical Impedance Study for Selective Dissolution of a Cu-Zn Alloy

The anodic dissolution behavior of copper and brass in an electrolyte solution of 0.5M NaCl containing 0.5 mM NaHCO₃ was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The Nyquist plots of the copper impedance described a small loop in the high-frequency range and a large locus in the low-frequency range. Additionally, the features of the impedance spectrum of the brass were similar to those of the copper. This indicates that the copper-enriched layer formed on the brass surface due to the selective dissolution of the zinc from the surface. In addition, the rest potential and the anodic polarization curve for each sample were measured in order to discuss the selective dissolution of the zinc from the brass surface.
