Electroacupuncture for migraine protocol for a systematic review of controlled trials

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Background and Objective:</B></P><P>A migraine is one of the primary headache disorders. Acupuncture has been widely used to treat migraine. Furthermore, electroacupuncture (EA) treatment has been also used to treat migraine. However, there has been no systematic review by assessing efficacy and safety of EA on migraine. This protocol is developed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the evidences related to the effectiveness and safety of EA on migraine.</P><P><B>Methods and analysis:</B></P><P>This protocol follows the guideline according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocol and registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). The following seven databases will be searched from their inception to September 2016: Medline, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, OASIS, the Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal, the Korean Medical Database and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). This Systemic review will include only the randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) of acupuncture therapy on migraine. We will perform data extraction, study selection, assessment with risk of bias and data analysis. The primary outcomes of this study are headache pain intensity and the total treatment effective rate. And this protocol study for systematic reviews, the approval of IRB was not required.</P><P><B>Ethics and dissemination:</B></P><P>This systematic review will not need ethical approval, because it doesn’t involve human beings. We will publish this systematic review electronically in a peer-reviewed journal. This systematic review will give healthcare practitioners good practical guide and information for treating migraine.</P><P><B>Systematic review registration:</B></P><P>PROSPEROCRD42018085099</P>

Background: Ultrasound-guided acupuncture has gained significance in diverse medical applications, particularly in enhancing the accuracy and safety of procedures. This tech- nique has shown promising results in clinical effectiveness and safety compared to tradi- tional methods. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of studies involving ultrasound-guided acupuncture, analyzing its accuracy and clinical impact. We explored various conditions, such as musculoskeletal pain syndromes, trigger finger, knee osteoarthritis, and more, to compare the efficacy of ultrasound-guided acupuncture against conventional techniques. Results: Ultrasound-guided acupuncture demonstrated enhanced accuracy in targeting specific anatomical structures, thereby improving the precision and effectiveness of the treatment. Studies highlighted its superiority in reducing complications and recurrence rates, particularly in conditions like trigger finger and knee osteoarthritis. Conclusion: The development and application of ultrasound technology in guiding acu- puncture procedures offer a safer and more effective approach to clinical practice. As ultrasound technology continues to advance, its integration with acupuncture can further refine and standardize protocols, potentially influencing future research and establishing standardized guidelines for practice.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Introduction:</B></P><P>Assessments of the range of motion (ROM) in human joints have been widely used to evaluate the joint condition. Although maker based motion capture system is the most popular and practical method in the clinical field, there have been limitations such as the relatively long time required in procedure or influence of attached markers on natural movement. Recently, markerless motion capture systems have been actively developed due to their relatively lower cost and convenience for installation. The POM-Checker (Team Elysium Inc., Seoul, Rep of Korea), a markerless motion capture system, was developed with new algorithms to assess the ROM in human joints. However, the measure of the POM-Checker has not been compared with a golden-standard device in evaluating the ROM in the human joints. So we developed a protocol to evaluate the validation and reliability of the POM-Checker in measuring the shoulder ROM. This study will also provide a standard procedure to measure the shoulder ROM with the POM-Checker and 3D motion analysis system simultaneously.</P><P><B>Methods/design:</B></P><P>This protocol is for a single institution comparative study to evaluate the validity and reliability of POM-Checker. Six participants will be recruited. We will measure the angles of shoulder abduction and flexion with POM-Checker and 3D motion analysis system simultaneously. The primary outcome is the angles of shoulder abduction and flexion.</P><P><B>Discussion:</B></P><P>This will be the first study to analyze the validity and reliability of POM-Checker in measuring shoulder ROM. Although the sample size of this study is small, it may not influence on the results conclusively, because the measures are very precise numerical angles. Furthermore, the angles of shoulder movements will be measured with both devices simultaneously.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>The results of the study will be helpful to find out the validity and reliability of a new developed ROM measure device, POM-Checker, by comparison with a golden standard system, 3D motion capture system, in measuring the shoulder ROM. It will also contribute to use of the POM-Checker in measuring the ROMs in many human joints</P>

The aim of this study was to report the effect of Korean medicine treatments and vestibular rehabilitation practice on an stroke patient with dizziness. The patient received Korean medicine treatments, such as acupuncture and herbal medication, and vestibular rehabilitation practice. The effects of treatments were assessed with the Korean dizziness handicap inventory, Korean activities-specific balance confidence scale, Korean vestibular disorders activities of daily living scale. Researchers conducted gait analysis for evaluation patient’s gait disturbance’s improvement during treatments. The intensity of dizziness were significantly reduced after the complete treatment. After treatment with traditional Korean medicine and vestibular rehabilitation practice, the patient showed significant improvements in symptoms and gait parameters. This case proved that combined therapy of Korean medicine treatment and vestibular rehabilitation practice can be useful for stroke patients who suffered from dizziness. however, studies of larger populations are required in the future. 한방 외용제와 약침 병행요법을 통해 치료된 당뇨병성 족부병변과 결합된 각화형 무좀의 복합상태 호전에 대한 증례보고: 방문진료 경험

Objectives: Fungal infections are the leading cause of foot lesions in diabetics. However, oral and topical antifungal therapies require prolonged use and are often difficult to implement in polypharmacy situations due to the risk of drug interactions and poor patient compliance. This study presents the case of a diabetic patient treated for long-standing tinea pedis without the use of antifungal drugs. The treatment relied solely on herbal ointments and pharmacopuncture. Methods: The patient used two kinds of herbal ointments daily, and acupuncture was performed on the affected area approximately every 10 days via home-visiting healthcare service. Results: Approximately 1 month after treatment initiation, clearance of moccasin-type tinea pedis was observed. High patient satisfaction was reported, with decreased pain on walking and a half-point improvement in the Bates-Jensen wound assessment tool score. Conclusion: Effective short-term treatment of tinea pedis in a diabetic patient was achieved using herbal topicals and acupuncture, without the use of antifungal medication.

Background: This study introduces an approach to ultrasound guided acupotomy for fo- raminal stenosis, for enhanced precision. Methods: Anatomical and vascular considerations of spine were explored to identify suit- able candidates based on foramen width and type of stenosis. The procedure involved ultrasound-guided acupotomy needling in the posterior superior and posterior inferior quarters, with safety measures. Results: Precise acupotomy needling in identified quarters proved effective, with careful attention to safety measures minimizing adverse events. Ultrasound guidance significantly enhanced accuracy throughout the procedure. Conclusion: This research advocates for the adoption of ultrasound-guided acupotomy in foraminal stenosis cases. By integrating anatomical insights, vascular considerations, and advanced imaging techniques, this approach offers a safe and effective alternative in the management of spinal stenosis, paving the way for further exploration in non-surgical in- terventions.
Repeated-Dose Toxicity Testing of Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture in Sprague-Dawley Rats

Background: The aim of this pilot study was to assess the safety and dosing of scolopendrid pharmacopuncture (SPP).Methods: A total of 40 healthy Sprague-Dawley rats (males and 20 females 20) were selected following a 7-day inspection and acclimation period. SPP was administered via intramuscular injection, over a 2-week period using 3 doses including a high-dose [0.84 mg of scolopendrid per kg of body weight (BW)], a meddose (0.42 mg/kg BW), and a low-dose (0.21 mg/kg BW). The control group was injected with sterile water into the muscles. Unusual changes caused by administration of the test substance were observed. Weight, feed intake, organ weight, and hematological examinations were compared among the groups. Using the SPSS statistical program, Levene’s test was performed to evaluate the homogeneity of variances, and a one-way ANOVA test was subsequently performed to assess the significance between each test group.Results: During the experiment no animals died. Weight change, food consumption, organ weight, hematological test, and blood biochemical tests showed no significant differences in the treatment groups compared to controls.<br>Conclusion: No toxicological changes related to the administration of test substances were observed. Therefore, the LD<sub>50</sub> (lethal-dose that kills 50%) of scolopendrid pharmacoupuncture in rats was greater than 0.84 mg/kg.
동의보감 속 “삼리”의 `족삼리`ㆍ`수삼리` 여부 판별

Objectives : This article examines whether `Samni`, which appears 62 times in Dongui-Bogam: Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine, means Joksamni(ST36) or Susamni(LI10). Methods : After searching the sentences which include `Samni` in Dongui-Bogam using Medical Classics Database, we checked the original reference of them to find clues to identification of Samni. As for the statements not identified by the original reference nor by Dongui-Bogam, we judged the meaning of Samni by comparing diseases of the statements with those of Joksamni or Susamni`s treatment area. Acupoints used together with Samni were also taken into account. Results : Out of 52 statements, Samni in 25 statements turned out to be Joksamni after tracing the reference; 6 statements mention stomach, and 4 statements treat Samni as an acupoint of stomach meridian; in 12 statements, diseases belong to Joksamni`s treatment area. Samni of the remaining 5 statements also seem to be Joksamni since the diseases of the statements are similar to those of Joksamni. It implies that Joksamni`s treatment area has expanded over time. Conclusions : All Samni in Dongui-Bogam is Joksamni.
