      • Are brucellosis, Q fever and melioidosis potential causes of febrile illness in Madagascar?

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Brucellosis, Q fever and melioidosis are zoonoses, which can lead to pyrexia. These diseases are often under-ascertained and underreported because of their unspecific clinical signs and symptoms, insufficient awareness by physicians and public health officers and limited diagnostic capabilities, especially in low-resource countries. Therefore, the presence of <I>Brucella</I> spp., <I>Coxiella burnetii</I> and <I>Burkholderia pseudomallei</I> was investigated in Malagasy patients exhibiting febrile illness. In addition, we analyzed zebu cattle and their ticks as potential reservoirs for <I>Brucella</I> and <I>C. burnetii</I>, respectively. Specific quantitative real-time PCR assays (qPCRs) were performed on 1020 blood samples drawn from febrile patients. In total, 15 samples (1.5%) were <I>Brucella-</I>positive, mainly originating from patients without travel history, while DNA from <I>C. burnetii</I> and <I>Bu. pseudomallei</I> was not detected.</P> <P>Anti-<I>C. burnetii</I> antibodies were found in four out of 201 zebu serum samples (2%), whereas anti-<I>Brucella</I> antibodies could not be detected. <I>Brucella</I> DNA was detected in a single zebu sample. Three out of 330 ticks analyzed (1%) were positively tested for <I>C. burnetii</I> DNA but with high Ct values in the qPCR assay. Our data suggest that zebus as well as <I>Amblyomma</I> and <I>Boophilus</I> ticks have to be considered as a natural reservoir or vector for <I>C. burnetii</I>, but the risk of cattle-to-human transmission is low. Since bovine brucellosis does not seem to contribute to human infections in Madagascar, other transmission routes have to be assumed.</P>

        COSMIC SHEAR RESULTS FROM THE DEEP LENS SURVEY. II. FULL COSMOLOGICAL PARAMETER CONSTRAINTS FROM TOMOGRAPHY

        <P>We present a tomographic cosmic shear study from the Deep Lens Survey (DLS), which, providing a limiting magnitude r(lim) similar to 27 (5 sigma), is designed as a precursor Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) survey with an emphasis on depth. Using five tomographic redshift bins, we study their auto- and cross-correlations to constrain cosmological parameters. We use a luminosity-dependent nonlinear model to account for the astrophysical systematics originating from intrinsic alignments of galaxy shapes. We find that the cosmological leverage of the DLS is among the highest among existing > 10 deg(2) cosmic shear surveys. Combining the DLS tomography with the 9 yr results of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP9) gives Omega(m) = 0.293(-0.014)(+0.012), sigma(8) = 0.833(-0.018)(+0.011), H-0 = 68.6(-1.2)(+1.4) km s(-1) Mpc(-1).4 1 1, and Omega(b) = 0.0475 +/- 0.0012 for Lambda CDM, reducing the uncertainties of the WMAP9-only constraints by similar to 50%. When we do not assume flatness for Lambda CDM, we obtain the curvature constraint Omega(k) = -0.010(-0.015)(+0.013) from the DLS+WMAP9 combination, which, however, is not well constrained when WMAP9 is used alone. The dark energy equation-of-state parameter w is tightly constrained when baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) data are added, yielding = - w -1.02(-0.09)(+0.10) with the DLS+WMAP9+BAO joint probe. The addition of supernova constraints further tightens the parameter to w = -1.03 +/- 0.03. Our joint constraints are fully consistent with the final Planck results and also with the predictions of a Lambda CDM universe.</P>

        독일 중년층의 예방적 행동과 사회적 불평등

        본 연구의 목적은 중년층들의 다양한 예방적 행동들에 관한 서베이를 분석하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구자들은 45세부터 65세까지 연령층에 속하는 1,093명과 전화인터뷰를 하였는데, 이때 여러 사회적 불평등은 다양한 유형의 예방적 행동들을 반영할 것이라는 가설로부터 출발하였다. 그 결과, 예방적 행동들은 다양한 예방적 조치들과 활동에 따라 5개 유형으로 나뉨을 밝혔다. 수입과 개인적 책임 요인들이 주요한 역할을 하였고, 이러한 요인들은 예방적 행동에 영향력이 있음을 밝혔다. 나아가, 주관적 건강 상태와 예방적 행동 간에는 응집력이 있음을 밝혔다. The aim of this study is to present a survey of the different preventive behaviors of middle-aged people. Our hypothesis is that many social inequalities are also present in the different types of preventive behaviors. As a methodological tool we conducted telephone interviews with 1,093 people in the age-cohort 45 to 65 years. The results show that the preventive behavior can be distinguished in five types differing in the degree of the various measures and activities. The factors income and personal responsibility play a major role and have effects on the preventive measures. Furthermore we proved cohesion between subjective state of health and the preventive behavior.
