Air Quality Deterioration in a Pristine Area due to a Petroleum Refinery and Associated Activities

The work describes an assessment of the major air pollutants, NO2, SO2, CO, O3, NH3, coarse and fine particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5) in ambient air in and around a 3 million tonne Petroleum Refinery and the possible impacts on a pristine area marked by the presence of the world-famous Kajiranga National Park, a world heritage site and habitat for the most number of one-horned rhinos in the world. The Refinery is at an aerial distance of 20-25 km from the wildlife habitat. The assessment is based on regular monitoring at four stations around the Refinery and one station near the National Park. Heavy rains during June to August influence the pollutant concentrations while at other times of the year, large traffic volume adds to the pollutant concentrations that peak during November to March, the dry months of the year. Correlation analysis by scatter technique is utilised to obtain the enhancement ratios to predict the variations in the concentrations of the pollutants and their spatial distribution. Computation of air quality index (AQI) indicates that the coarse and the fine particulates in the ambient air could be a major hazard to wildlife in the area.
Numerical study of mist film cooling on a flat plate with various numbers of deposition

An Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase solver of the open-source CFD software OpenFoam was used to numerically compute the film cooling investigation on a flat plate with various numbers of deposition. The analysis was performed at different mist loading fractions, droplet diameters and blowing ratios. Various numbers of depositions were configured in the domain at different locations. An increase in the number of depositions at the plate surface raised the turbulence mixing of the fluids. It eventually weakened the film cooling performance. Moreover, the formation of depositions towards upstream after the coolant’s exit hole led to a decreasing film cooling effectiveness. It was also observed that the cooling performance was maximum at the highest blowing ratio, highest loading fraction, lowest droplet diameter and lowest injection angle.
Effect of Thidiazuron (TDZ) on In vitro Regeneration of Blackgram (Vigna mungo L.) Embryonic Axes

Regeneration has been achieved in blackgram (Vigna mungo) using thidiazuron (TDZ) in the culture medium. The explanted cotyledon with wounded embryonic axes produced the highest number (9.75-10.45) of healthy, elongated shoots when cultured on shoot bud regeneration medium (SRI) composed of 2 ${\mu}M$ BAP, 2 ${\mu}M$ KIN, 2 ${\mu}M$ TDZ, and 0.5 ${\mu}M$ NAA followed by multiple shoot regeneration (SRII) medium containing 2 ${\mu}M$ BAP, 2 ${\mu}M$ KIN, and multiple shoot elongation (SE) medium (0.5 ${\mu}M$ of BAP + 0.5 ${\mu}M$ of KIN). The presence of TDZ in combination with BAP and NAA in the SRI medium for one sub-culture cycle (10 - 14 days) significantly increases formation of multiple shoot buds per explant. Independent, healthy shoots obtained were selected for both in vitro rooting and grafting. Establishment of plantlets in the soil was highest (80 - 100%) in the case of in vitro rooted compared to grafted shoots (40%). The protocol appears to be competent to Agrobacterium-meditated transformation with 'gus' as a reporter gene. PCR analysis of the $T_0$ and $T_1$ progenies showed the presence and transmission of the transgene. We document here the regeneration and transformation of blackgram using cotyledons with wounded embryonic axes and the protocol appears to be suitable for genetic transformation of blackgram.

Socio-cultural motivation in women’s entrepreneurship: Exploring the handloom industry in Assam

This paper attempts to develop a few measures or scales of entrepreneurial motives of women, given the socio-cultural factors in developing economies. Within the push–pull theory of entrepreneurial motivation, we use exploratory factor analysis with an orthogonal varimax rotation technique to examine entrepreneurial motivation, integrating it with socio-cultural beliefs. We identify five entrepreneurial motives—self-dependence, preserving handloom culture, providing monetary support, formal job environment, and work-flexibility. Within socially constructed gender roles, generic desires of women are crucial for entrepreneurial behavior. Contrary to existing findings, we found that women with a higher desire to provide monetary support to their family were found to be less likely to become micro-entrepreneurs, which can be accounted for their poor economic conditions, a significant risk-averse attitude, and credit constraints. The scales constructed could be used across cultures, especially in developing economies. Their replication should provide an understanding of why women micro-entrepreneurs tend to be concentrated in specific sectors, resulting in gender segregation. Given the context specific measurement items, scholars interested in studying socio-cultural attributes in entrepreneurial motivation can further develop and validate the multi-item constructs that distinguish women’s motivations for specific activities.
