      • An Indoor Positioning System for a First Responder in an Emergency Environment

Gong Bo Moon,Moon Beom Hur,Gyu-In Jee Vol.2012 No.10

An indoor positioning system for a first responder in an emergency environment is focused as one of the national agenda in Korea. In this area, many researches are carried out, still there left limitations of a system installation and an inconsistent positioning accuracy in the arbitrary emergency environment. This paper presents a new indoor positioning system for the first responder, especially firemen in the scene of a fire. The portability and adaptability for the emergency environment are mainly considered for a feasibility of the proposed system. With portable access points (APs), which can measure ranges to the other AP and the firemen based on IEEE 820.15.4a, in an indoor environment and a monitoring station in an outdoor environment, a control unit outside a building in fire can determine the position of the firemen and deployed APs using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methods. In this paper, the concept and positioning procedure of the proposed system are introduced. An experiment on ranging is done to analyze an error characteristic of measurements, then the result is applied to a simulation for the positioning system to certify the possibility of the system operation in the emergency environment. The simulation result shows that the proposed indoor positioning system can be applied to help the firemen escape from the emergency environment safely.

      • A Robust Indoor Positioning System using Two-Stage EKF SLAM for First Responders in an Emergency Environment

        Gong Bo Moon,Sebum Chun,Moon-Beom Hur,Gyu-In Jee Vol.2013 No.10

A positioning method for a first responder in an indoor emergency environment is needed to strengthen a safety for rescue operation. In Korea, it is focused as one of the national agenda. Though many researches are done in this field, but they still have limitations of system preloading and a poor positioning accuracy depending on an arbitrary situation. This paper presents a robust indoor positioning system for the first responder in the scene of fire. The proposed positioning system consists of a monitoring station outside a building, portable access points (APs), and first responders. In the first place, the first responder measure distances to other first responders and portable APs in the hearable range, and calculates its relative position utilizing the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) method implemented with the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). In this process, the position information stored in the APs and first responders can serve as a map for the others. Then the initial position guess and distance measurements are delivered to the monitoring station via ad-hoc network by portable APs and first responders to correct position estimates of those in the whole system. The monitoring station also uses EKF SLAM method with all available position estimates and distance measurements. In this paper, the system configuration and positioning method are presented, and the simulation on the positioning of the portable APs and the first responders with respect to the monitoring station is carried out to certify the feasibility of the proposed system.

      • Optical Communication Method using CCR

Vol.2008 No.10

These days, wireless sensor network, which has a base station and sensor nodes, is widely used. Sensor nodes are located at certain positions to gather the environmental information around them. Then they need to transmit measured data to base station or other sensor nodes. Currently, most of them are using RF (radio frequency) method for communication. This method has a security problem and needs extra modulator and demodulator to handle RF signals In this paper, to avoid these problems, communication method via optical channel is proposed. This method only needs light source and CCR (corner cube retro-reflector). First, it is checked whether proposed method can be implemented or not. Next, applicable procedure, which includes error detection, for optical communication is developed. Finally, experimental result is shown to verify that the proposed method works with real system.

      • Position Determination Using the DTV Segment Sync Signal

Moon, Gong-Bo,Jee, Gyu-In,Lee, Jang-Gyu 2011 Transaction on control, automation and systems eng Vol. No.

As a supplement to the Global Positioning System (GPS) in an urban center and indoor environment, the digital television (DTV) segment sync signal can be employed to obtain a mobile user's position. Two DTV receivers and a counter are integrated to measure the time difference of arrival (TDOA) for a pair of received signals from a transmitter and its corresponding repeater (DTVR). Using the measurements from a transmitter and its multiple corresponding DTVR pairs, the mobile user position can be estimated using the recursive least square method. An experiment done in Seoul using two low-grade high resolution digital television (HDTV) receivers and a two-channel universal counter demonstrates that the mean value of the mobile user position measurement is accurate to 42.58 meters circular error probability (CEP).

Vol.2009 No.7

Enhancement of DNA-mediated Energy Transfer from Ethidium to meso-Tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin by Ca2+ Ion

        Kim, Jong-Moon,Park, Bo-Ra-Mi,Kim, Young-Rhan,Gong, Lindan,Jang, Myung-Duk,Kim, Seog-K. Korean Chemical Society 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.4

The fluorescence intensity of DNA-intercalated ethidium with [ethidium]/[DNA base] being 0.005 was quenched upon the binding of another intercalating ligand, meso-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin (TMPyP). Addition of $Ca^{2+}$ enhanced the quenching efficiency. The range of separations between donor and acceptor molecules, within which total quenching occurs, was calculated using a one-dimensional resonance energy transfer mechanism to be 9.5 base-pairs or $32.3{\AA}$ in the absence of $Ca^{2+}$ ions. The distance increased to 18.7 base-pairs or about $63.6{\AA}$ in the presence $100{\mu}M$ $Ca^{2+}$. Considering that (1) $Ca^{2+}$ had little effect on the binding modes of ethidium and TMPyP, which was investigated by reduced linear dichroism and (2) spectral overlap between the emission spectrum of ethidium and the absorption spectrum of TMPyP was maintained in the presence of $Ca^{2+}$, contributions from orientation factor and spectral overlap to $Ca^{2+}$-induced enhancement in DNA mediated energy transfer was limited. Although there is no direct evidence, electron transfer along the DNA stem may accompany the observed fluorescence quenching. In this respect, DNA bound $Ca^{2+}$ act as a partially conducting medium.
