Cost-savings in civil engineering projects can be one of the cardinal virtues for design engineers because the projects require enormous budget paid by tax payers. Optimization, which seeks efficient and economical design, has traditionally adopted mathematical differentiation (ex, Lagrangian multiplier, BFGS techniques, etc) or reduced enumeration (ex, branch and bound method). However, for a design with numerous variables or that with discrete variables (instead of continuous variables), the above-mentioned techniques have failed to search desirable solutions. Hence, researchers have turned their interests to evolutionary algorithms (ex, genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and ant colony algorithm) that mimic natural or behavioral phenomenon. This study introduced another phenomenon-based algorithm (harmony search) which mimics the improvization process of musicians, then compared its performance with other algorithms in various civil engineering problems. Especially, when applied to large-scale real-world problem, the harmony search algorithm found much better results than those of genetic algorithm because it has a novel stochastic derivative which is different from traditional calculus-based one. In addition, a web-based optimal computing tool and informative website have been developed in order for other researchers to easily understand and utilize the harmony search algorithm.

Improved Optimization for Wastewater Treatment and Reuse System Using Computational Intelligence
Geem, Zong Woo,Chung, Sung Yong,Kim, Jin-Hong Hindawi Limited 2018 Complexity Vol.2018 No.-

River water pollution by wastewater can cause significant negative impact on the aquatic sustainability. Hence, accurate modeling of this complicated system and its cost-effective treatment and reuse decision is very important because this optimization process is related to economic expenditure, societal health, and environmental deterioration. In order to optimize this complex system, we may consider three treatment or reuse options such as microscreening filtration, nitrification, and fertilization-oriented irrigation on top of two existing options such as settling and biological oxidation. The objective of this environmental optimization is to minimize the economic expenditure of life cycle costs while satisfying the public health standard in terms of groundwater quality and the environmental standard in terms of river water quality. Particularly, this study improves existing optimization model by pinpointing the critical deficit location of dissolved oxygen sag curve by using analytic differentiation. Also, the proposed formulation considers more practical constraints such as maximal size of irrigation area and minimal amount of filtration treatment process. The results obtained by using an evolutionary algorithm, named a parameter-setting-free harmony search algorithm, show that the proposed model successfully finds optimal solutions while conveniently locating the critical deficit point.

Parameter Calibration of the Nonlinear Muskingum Model using Harmony Search
Geem, Zong-Woo,Kim, Joong-Hoon,Yoon, Yong-Nam Korea Water Resources Association 2000 한국수자원학회논문집 Vol.33 No.1
A newly developed heuristic algorithm, Harmony Search, is applied to the parameter calibration problem of the nonlinear Muskingum model. The Harmony Search could, mimicking the improvisation of music player, find better parameter values for in the nonlinear Muskingum model than five other methods including another heuristic method, genetic algorithm, in the aspect of SSQ(the sum of the square of the deviations between the observed and routed outflows) as well as in the aspects of SAD(the sum of the absolute value of the deviations), DPO(deviations of peak of routed and actual flows) and DPOT(deviatios of peak time of routed and actual outflow). Harmony Search also has the advantage that it does not require the process of asuming the initial values of desing parameters. The sensitivity analysis of Harmony Memory Considering Rate showed that relatively large values of Harmony Memory Considering Rate makes the Harmony Search converge to a better solution.
