Effects of a Low-Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyol Diet on Symptoms of Functional Abdominal Pain in Pediatric Patients

Yasmine Gamal Abdou El Gendy,Mohammad Ashraf Abdel Wahed,Mostafa Hussein Hassan Ragab,Yosra Mohamed Mohsen Awad 대한소아소화기영양학회 2022 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.25 No.6

Purpose: Recently, great interest has been focused on dietary fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) for the treatment of functional abdominal pain (FAP). Several meta-analyses, including those on the adult population, have been published, potentiating its role. However, pediatric studies are scarce. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a low-FODMAP diet on the severity of FAP in children. Methods: This clinical trial included 50 patients aged 3–18 years with irritable bowel syndrome and FAP that were not otherwise specified. The patients were instructed to receive a low FODMAP diet guided by a dietitian. The primary outcome was the percentage of responders after 2 months of dietary intervention compared with baseline. Other outcomes included changes in stool consistency and quality of life (QoL) scores using the KIDSCREEN-10 questionnaire, and weight-for-age z-scores. Results: After the dietary intervention, 74% of patients showed more than 30% lower pain intensity, as examined using the Wong-Baker Faces pain rating scale. Their QoL significantly improved, and patients have gained weight. Conclusion: A low FODMAP diet can improve pain intensity and QoL among children with functional abdominal pain, with no detrimental effects on body weight.

Hollow N-TiO2/MnO2 nanocomposite based yeast biomass for gaseous formaldehyde degradation under visible light

Elham F. Mohamed,Gamal Awad 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.98 No.-

Synthesis of new hollow nano-composite photocatalysts based yeast biomass has been considered as afuture innovation technology to control air pollution. This work demonstrates that a green, environmentally friendly, sustainable, and facile hydrothermal carbonization route of low-cost andrenewable yeast biomass used to fabricate natural doping N-colloidal carbon spheres (NCSs) as a hardtemplate for hollow N-TiO2/MnO2. The presence of natural doping nitrogen serves as a stabilizer andreductant. Hence, the yeast provided a solid frame with deposits nitrogen to form the hybrid N/yeastprecursor. The resulting NCSs were obtained by hydrothermal method at 180 C for 6 h. Thecharacterization was performed using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. Itwas found that thefindings fully retained the morphology of the yeast cells and the size of the hollowspheres was about 1.5–2 mm. The results of catalytic test showed that the new hollow nanosphere NTiO2/MnO2 possessed a higher photodegradation activity for gaseous formaldehyde under visibleirradiation than the commercial TiO2, due to their higher surface area (160 m2 g 1), hollow structure andsuperior reducibility. Its catalytic efficiency was attained to be more than 90%, which is about 10 timeshigher than that of the conventional catalyst TiO2–P25.

      • Fine Needle Aspiration Cytopathology of Pediatric Lympha denopathy among Sudanese Children

Ahmed, Hussain Gadelkarim,Elmubasher, Maysa Badawi,Salih, Rashid Awad Abdallah,Elhussein, Gamal Eldin Mohamed Osman,Ashankyty, Ibraheem Mohmmed Alamin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.7

Background: Pediatric lymphadenopathy is a challenging medical situation for the child patient, the parents, and the physician. Although the bulk of masses will be benign the fear of malignancy is omnipresent. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the common cytopathological patterns of lymphadenopathy among Sudanese children. Methods: One hundred pediatric patients presenting with peripheral lymphadenopathy were included in the study, their ages ranging from 2 to 14 years, with a mean age of 7 years. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations and FNA materials were prospectively obtained. Results: FNA was performed in 100 cases (100%). There were no technical complications. All cases confirmed adequacy of specimen. Overall, FNA demonstrated 90 (90%) benign lesions and 10 (10%) malignant diagnosis. The benign lesions were reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (n=64), followed by benign granulomatous disease (n=26). Of the 10 cases diagnosed with malignancy, 7 (7%) were cases of non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma and the remaining 3 (3%) were Hodgkin's lymphomas. Conclusion: Pediatric lymphadenopathy is common in Sudan. CLA is the common frequent site. Lymphoma represents a major challenge in this setting.

Potential Role for a Panel of Immunohistochemical Markers in the Management of Endometrial Carcinoma

        Amany Salama,Mohammad Arafa,Eman ElZahaf,Abdelhadi Mohamed Shebl,Azmy Abd El-Hameed Awad,Sylvia A. Ashamallah,Reda Hemida,Anas Gamal,Abd AlRahman Foda,Khaled Zalata,El-Said M. Abdel-Hady 대한병리학회 2019 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.53 No.3

Background: In order to improve the efficacy of endometrial carcinoma (EC) treatment, identifying prognostic factors for high risk patients is a high research priority. This study aimed to assess the relationships among the expression of estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), Ki-67, and the different histopathological prognostic parameters in EC and to assess the value of these in the management of EC. Methods: We examined 109 cases of EC. Immunohistochemistry for ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67 were evaluated in relation to age, tumor size, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage and grade, depth of infiltration, cervical and ovarian involvement, lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI), and lymph node (LN) metastasis. Results: The mean age of patients in this study was 59.8 ± 8.2 years. Low ER and PR expression scores and high Ki-67 expression showed highly significant associations with non-endometrioid histology (p = .007, p < .001, and p < .001, respectively) and poor differentiation (p = .007, p < .001, and p <. 001, respectively). Low PR score showed a significant association with advanced stage (p = .009). Low ER score was highly associated with LVSI (p = .006), and low PR scores were associated significantly with LN metastasis (p = .026). HER2 expression was significantly related to advanced stages (p = .04), increased depth of infiltration (p = .02), LVSI (p = .017), ovarian involvement (p = .038), and LN metastasis (p = .038). There was a close relationship between HER2 expression and uterine cervical involvement (p = .009). Higher Ki-67 values were associated with LN involvement (p = .012). Conclusions: The over-expression of HER2 and Ki-67 and low expression of ER and PR indicate a more malignant EC behavior. An immunohistochemical panel for the identification of high risk tumors can contribute significantly to prognostic assessments.
