      • Esophageal, Gastric and Duodenal Disorders : Esophageal Caustic Injuries and Colon Interposition in Children: Long-Term Follow-UP

        Background/Aims: As sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is frequently used as a cleaning agent for air conditioners in southern Iran, caustic esophageal injuries happen frequently especially in children. After undergoing several dilatation procedures of the esophagus, a number of these patients eventually require colon interposition, an operation by which the esophagus is replaced by a segment of colon. Colin interposition is a surgical treatment modality for patients with severe caustic injuries in the esophagus. This study describes the technique and results of colon interposition in patients who bad undergone this operation. Methods: All patients who underwent colon interposition in Nemazee Hospital affiliated to Shiraz University of Medicals. Sciences in southern Iran from April 1990 to April 2005, were enrolled in our study. Medical records of these patients were reviewed and they were called for a follow-up examination. Out of 18 patients, only eight patients responded. They underwent clinical examination, laboratory tests, imaging and endoscopy. Results: Growth retardation was seen in all cases. All radiographs of the chest revealed peribronchial thickening. Redundancy was seen in 60% of the patients. Lower junction stenosis, diverticulum and dilatation of the lower esophagus were commonly visible. Epigastric fullness (85%), dysphagia (57%), halitosis (45%), heartburn (45%), vomit-ting (45%), odynophaqgia (28%) and abdominal pain (28%) were the most common complications. They were no mortalities in our series. Conclusions: As growth retardation was the most common complication of colon interposition in children, an appropriate nutritional support seems to be necessary after the operation.

        Expert representation chemical looping reforming: A comparative study of Fe, Mn, Co and Cu as oxygen carriers supported on Al2O3

        In this study, a comparison between the performance of alumina supported Fe, Mn, Co and Cu oxygencarriers has been performed in chemical looping reforming (CLR) of methane. This process is consistingof two stages: ‘air reactor’ and ‘fuel reactor’, in which the oxygen carriers were placed in a fixed bedtubular reactor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-raydiffraction (XRD) were applied to check the carrier specifications before and after the process. Also,response surface method based on central composite design was applied to investigate the operatingconditions including reaction temperature, time and oxygen carrier type. The results showed that theeffective retention time of oxygen carriers varies for different metals in the air and fuel reactors, whichdepends on the amount of adsorption and desorption of oxygen in each stage. Results of theseexperiments revealed that iron based oxygen carrier had the highest resistance against sintering and themaximum capacity for oxygen adsorption among the mentioned carriers. It was also found that copperhad a significant oxygen transport capacity; however its resistance against sintering and agglomerationis relatively low. Finally, Design expert software suggested several optimized solutions; among them thebest choice was obtained to be Fe-based oxygen carrier with reaction temperature and time of1014.13 8C and 50.5 min in the second cycle respectively.

        Accuracy of maxillofacial prototypes fabricated by different 3-dimensional printing technologies using multi-slice and cone-beam computed tomography

        Purpose: This study aimed to compare the accuracy of 3-dimensional(3D) printed models derived from multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems with different fields of view (FOVs). Materials and Methods: Five human dry mandibles were used to assess the accuracy of reconstructions of anatomical landmarks, bone defects, and intra-socket dimensions by 3D printers. The measurements were made on dry mandibles using a digital caliper (gold standard). The mandibles then underwent MDCT imaging. In addition, CBCT images were obtained using Cranex 3D and NewTom 3G scanners with 2 different FOVs. The images were transferred to two 3D printers, and the digital light processing (DLP) and fused deposition modeling (FDM) techniques were used to fabricate the 3D models, respectively. The same measurements were also made on the fabricated prototypes. The values measured on the 3D models were compared with the actual values, and the differences were analyzed using the paired t-test. Results: The landmarks measured on prototypes fabricated using the FDM and DLP techniques based on all 4 imaging systems showed differences from the gold standard. No significant differences were noted between the FDM and DLP techniques. Conclusion: The 3D printers were reliable systems for maxillofacial reconstruction. In this study, scanners with smaller voxels had the highest precision, and the DLP printer showed higher accuracy in reconstructing the maxillofacial landmarks. It seemed that 3D reconstructions of the anterior region were overestimated, while the reconstructions of intra-socket dimensions and implant holes were slightly underestimated.
