Wind tunnel study on fluctuating internal pressure of open building induced by tangential flow
Sheng Chen,Peng Huang,Richard G. J. Flay 한국풍공학회 2021 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.32 No.2
This paper describes a wind tunnel test on a 1:25 scale model of TTU building with several adjustable openings in order to comprehensively study the characteristics of fluctuating internal pressures, especially the phenomenon of the increase in fluctuating internal pressures induced by tangential flow over building openings and the mechanism causing that. The effects of several factors, such as wind angle, turbulence intensity, opening location, opening size, opening shape and background porosity on the fluctuating internal pressures at oblique wind angles are also described. It has been found that there is a large increase in the fluctuating internal pressures at certain oblique wind angles (typically around 60° to 80°). These fluctuations are greater than those produced by the flow normal to the opening when the turbulence intensity is low. It is demonstrated that the internal pressure resonances induced by the external pressure fluctuations emanating from flapping shear layers on the sidewall downstream of the windward corner are responsible for the increase in the fluctuating internal pressures. Furthermore, the test results show that apart from the opening shape, all the other factors influence the fluctuating internal pressures and the internal pressure resonances at oblique wind angles to varying degrees.
CFD modelling and the development of the diffuser augmented wind turbine
Phillips, D.G.,Richards, P.J.,Flay, R.G.J. Techno-Press 2002 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.5 No.2
Research being undertaken at the University of Auckland has enabled Vortec Energy to improve the performance of the Vortec 7 Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbine. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling of the Vortec 7 was used to ascertain the effectiveness of geometric modifications to the Vortec 7. The CFD work was then developed to look at new geometries, and refinement of these led to greater power augmentation for a given diffuser exit area ratio. Both full scale analysis of the Vortec 7 and a wind tunnel investigation of the development design have been used for comparison with the CFD model.
Wind tunnel study of wind structure at a mountainous bridge location
Lei Yan,Zhen S. Guo,Le D. Zhu,Richard G. J. Flay 한국풍공학회 2016 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.23 No.3
Wind tunnel tests of a 1/2200-scale mountainous terrain model have been carried out to investigate local wind characteristics at a bridge location in southeast Tibet, China. Flows at five key locations on the bridge at deck level were measured for 26 directions. It was observed that wind characteristics (including mean wind velocity and overall turbulence intensity) vary significantly depending on the approaching wind direction and measurement position. The wind inclination angle measured in the study fluctuated between -18 and +16 and the ratio of mean wind velocity to reference wind velocity was small when the wind inclination angles were large, especially for positive wind inclination angles. The design standard wind speed and the minimum critical wind speed for flutter rely on the wind inclination angle and should be determined from the results of such tests. The variation of wind speed with wind inclination angles should be of the asymmetry step type. The turbulence characteristics of the wind were found to be similar to real atmospheric flows.
