朴乙洙 한양대학교 한국학연구소 1983 韓國學論集 Vol.4 No.-
The poetry in the age of civilization appeared in the time of a violent movement and a confusion. It is the honest self-expression of the populace and the conscience of the time, gave the people confronted with an internal disturbance a hope and a courange, and showed the way to the wandering people. And it is a literature established by the spontaneous participation of the people among the aspirations and the applauses of the populace. In other words, we cannot expect the right evaluation about the poetry in the age of civilization, if we overlook that it is a literary legacy created in a special situation. Accordingly, the subject of this study is centered around the works which are Kasa(歌辭) 695 pieces, Sijo(時調) 383 pieces and Hansi(漢詩) 238 pieces published in the Tae Han Mae Il Sin Bo which was the strongest anti-Japanese journal under the Japanese Imperial Ruling, including the works published on the other newspapers and magazines, and the aim of this study is to bestow the right position of the poetry in the age of civilization by overcoming the greatest weak point that the existing studies were done with the partial materials, and also through deep examinations about the writers, forms, contents and rhetoric functions according to the genre, and by examining the problems of the structure on the side of form, the problems of the spirit of the time on the side of contents, the problems of the effect on the side of function, the problems of the nature of resistance on the side of the thought, and the linking problems of the poetry with the later one of Yi danasty. The results of the study of Sijo in the age of civilization which is the first part of the whole study are as follows: 1) The Sijo in the age of civilization(開化時調) is located on the serial line which is the Traditional Sijo-the Civilized Sijo-the New Sijo-the Modern Sijo, in the stream of literary history of Sijo. 2) The Civilized Sijo was composed by the non-professional writers, and the central themes are alassified broadly into the resistance against the Japanese Imperial Ruling, the condermnation toward the pro-Japanese group, the aspiration toward cultural civilization, and self-reflection about the internal evil customs and irrationality. 3) Though the the Civilized Sijo inherited the form of the Traditional Sijo as it was, it participated positively in the actuality by changing its oringinal form resolutely to express the positive will of the time. 4) The rhetorical function of the Civilized Sijo is to emphasize the untilitarian practicality. That is, the satirical methods were used as the straight real-name criticism, the roundabout criticism by insi- nuation and the quotation criticism by the authority, etc. 5) Though the Civilized Sijo has the faults like the destitution of the artistice quality and the step-following of the form of the traditional poetry, it should be highly appreaciated on the social functional sides: the positive acceptance of the time and a literature participated in the actuality as a resistance poetry.
