The influence of social capital on household income in Cambodia

As a sustainable development study to reduce global poverty, the Institute of Poverty Alleviation and International Development (IPAID) at Yonsei University investigated the role of social capital on household income by analyzing two villages, Veal Pung and Veal Pon, in Cambodia in 2014. In rural areas that are focused on farming, a village's level of social capital may be helpful to reduce poverty by sharing necessary information and eliciting collective behavior. Based on the results of in-depth interviews and a survey, we examined the influence of the participation of Common Rice Farming (CRF), which serves as social capital, on household income. The results demonstrate that participating in the CRF was significantly associated with crop income; however, it was not associated with farm income, which includes other agricultural products. Hence, it shows a limited influence on household income. Moreover, the household income in Veal Pung, which is closer to the local main city Oudong, was significantly higher than in Veal Pon. One implication is that different approaches across age may be necessary. As a policy suggestion, a traditional approach to developing a factory and a road is helpful mainly for relatively young households that have a preference for employment in a city. Whereas, for older households related to farming, a consideration of the village level of social capital along with a traditional way is necessary.

Influences of Reciprocity on a Consumer Boycott in an Experiment

By conducting a boycott experiment, this paper studied whether the reciprocity of consumers affects boycott decision. The boycott experiment is a two-stage post-offer market game, in which a seller first decides an asking price and then consumers decide to purchase goods after observing the asking price. To find the effect of reciprocity on consumer’s purchase decision, the level of information provided to the consumers corresponding to the previous asking price and another consumer’s boycott history, on average, was modified. Consequently, the sellers lowered the asking price with the belief that disclosing additional information about their previous profit fractions decreases the consumer’s purchase frequency. Moreover, consumers’ purchase frequency is affected by both the given value of the goods and the asking price, but not by the different levels of information provided. Therefore, the consumers appear to have no reciprocity preferences on a boycott.

사회적 책임, 상호주의, 리더십이 자원봉사 참여에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

본 연구는 아름다운 재단에서 제공되는 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2020년의 총 6회의 자발적 기부 및 자원봉사에 대한 설문자료를 바탕으로 자발적 기부 및 자원봉사 의사결정에 영향을 미치는 결정요인을 연구하였다. 특히, 최근 경제실험 등을 통하여 연구된 사회적 규범, 상호주의, 선도적 예제에 의한 리더십(이하 리더십)이 자원봉사 참여 결정에 미치는 영향력을 주로 연구하였다. 주요 결론으로서 사회적 규범, 혹은 상호주의는 자원봉사에 영향을 미치지 못하였지만 리더십은 자원봉사에 긍정적인 영향력을 미쳤다. This study investigates the factors influencing voluntary donations and volunteerism based on survey data from the years 2004 to 2020 provided by the Beautiful Foundation, a non-profit organization. Specifically, the study examines the influence of social norms, reciprocity, and leadership, as demonstrated through recent economic experiments and other research. The main finding of the study suggests that while social norms and reciprocity did not have a significant impact on volunteerism, leadership had a positive influence on volunteerism.

본 연구는 공공기관 경영평가 중 계량평가에 사용되는 3가지 평가방식, 목표대실적, 목표부여, 목표부여(편차) 평가방식을 이론적 분석 및 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 비교·분석하였다. 중후장대한 제조업 관련 사업의 경우 한계생산체감의 법칙이 작동하면 성장률, 물동량 등 성과 관련 지표가 상대적으로 높지 않은 안정적인 수준을 유지하게 된다. 이 경우 해당 공공기관의 성과를 평가하는 평가 지표와 관련하여 목표대실적, 목표부여, 목표부여(편차) 순으로 평가점수가 구조적으로 높으며, 목표부여(편차), 목표부여, 목표대실적 순으로 표준편차가 높게 된다. 또한, 3가지 평가지표 모두 과거 실적이 평가지표에 양(+)의 방향으로 영향을 미쳤다. 즉 과거 실적이 증가할 때 평가점수가 높아졌으며 과거 실적이 감소할 경우 평가점수가 낮아졌다. 이러한 결과는 경영 성과가 아닌 평가지표 자체가 평가에 영향을 주게 되어 피평가기관의 효율성을 낮출 가능성이 있음을 시사한다. Using theoretical analysis and simulation, this research compared and assessed the three evaluation indices used in quantitative evaluation among management evaluations of public institutions: target-to-performance, target assignment, and target assignment (deviation). Large-scale manufacturing-related enterprises often maintain performance-related measures like growth rate and trade volume at a consistent, not-very-high level if marginal production declines. Based on the simulation result, the evaluation score was structurally high in the following order: target-to-performance, target assignment, and target assignment (deviation), whereas the standard deviation followed the same sequence: target assignment (deviation), target assignment, and target-to-performance. Additionally, the past performance had a positive (+) impact on all evaluation indices. In other words, the evaluation score raised as past performance increased. Also, the evaluation score declined as past performance decreased as well. These findings suggest that the efficiency of the assessed institution may be decreased if the assessment index itself, rather than management performance, has a significant impact on the evaluation.
