The reduction of the dynamic response of an offshore structure subjected to wind-generated random ocean waves is of extreme significance in the aspects of serviceability, fatigue life and safety of the structure. In this study, a new neuro-control scheme is applied to the vibration control of a fixed offshore platform under random wave loads to examine the applicability of the proposed method. It is called the Lattice Probabilistic Neural Network (LPNN), as it utilizes lattice pattern of state vectors as the training data of PNN. When control results of the LPNN are compared with those of the NN and PNN, LPNN showed better performance in effectively suppressing the structural responses in a shorter computational time.
Design criteria of wind barriers for traffic -Part 2: decision making process
Kim, Dong Hyawn,Kwon, Soon-Duck,Lee, Il Keun,Jo, Byung Wan Techno-Press 2011 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.14 No.1
This study presents a decision making process for installation of wind barrier which is used to reduce the wind speed applied to running vehicles on expressway. To determine whether it is needed to install wind barrier or not, cost and benefit from wind barrier are calculated during lifetime. In obtaining car accidental risk, probabilistic distribution of wind speed, daily traffic volume, mixture ratio in the volume, and duration time for wind speed range are considered. It is recommended to install wind barrier if benefit from the barrier installation exceed construction cost. In the numerical examples, case studies were shown for risk and benefit calculation and main risky regions on Korean highway were all evaluated to identify the number of installation sites.
Dynamic reliability analysis of offshore wind turbine support structure under earthquake
Kim, Dong-Hyawn,Lee, Gee-Nam,Lee, Yongjei,Lee, Il-Keun Techno-Press 2015 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.21 No.6
Seismic reliability analysis of a jacket-type support structure for an offshore wind turbine was performed. When defining the limit state function by using the dynamic response of the support structure, a number of dynamic calculations must be performed in a First-Order Reliability Method (FORM). That means analysis costs become too high. In this paper, a new reliability analysis approach using a static response is used. The dynamic effect of the response is considered by introducing a new parameter called the Peak Response Factor (PRF). The probability distribution of PRF can be estimated by using the peak value in the dynamic response. The probability distribution of the PRF was obtained by analyzing dynamic responses during a set of ground motions. A numerical example is presented to compare the proposed approach with the conventional static response-based approach.
Sensitivity Property of Generalized CMAC Neural Network
Kim, Dong-Hyawn,Lee, In-Won Computational Structural Engineering Institute of 2003 Computational structural engineering Vol.3 No.1
Generalized CMAC (GCMAC) is a type of neural network known to be fast in learning. The network may be useful in structural engineering applications such as the identification and the control of structures. The derivatives of a trained GCMAC is relatively poor in accuracy. Therefore to improve the accuracy, a new algorithm is proposed. If GCMAC is directly differentiated, the accuracy of the derivative is not satisfactory. This is due to the quantization of input space and the shape of basis function used. Using the periodicity of the predicted output by GCMAC, the derivative can be improved to the extent of having almost no error. Numerical examples are considered to show the accuracy of the proposed algorithm.
