        THE LOCAL DUST FOREGROUNDS IN THE MICROWAVE SKY. I. THERMAL EMISSION SPECTRA

        <P>Analyses of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiationmaps made by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have revealed anomalies not predicted by the standard inflationary cosmology. In particular, the power of the quadrupole moment of the CMB fluctuations is remarkably low, and the quadrupole and octopole moments are aligned mutually and with the geometry of the solar system. It has been suggested in the literature that microwave sky pollution by an unidentified dust cloud in the vicinity of the solar system may be the cause for these anomalies. In this paper, we simulate the thermal emission by clouds of spherical homogeneous particles of several materials. Spectral constraints from the WMAP multi-wavelength data and earlier infrared observations on the hypothetical dust cloud are used to determine the dust cloud's physical characteristics. In order for its emissivity to demonstrate a flat, CMB-like wavelength dependence over the WMAP wavelengths ( 3 through 14 mm), and to be invisible in the infrared light, its particles must be macroscopic. Silicate spheres of several millimeters in size and carbonaceous particles an order of magnitude smaller will suffice. According to our estimates of the abundance of such particles in the zodiacal cloud and trans-Neptunian belt, yielding the optical depths of the order of 10(-7) for each cloud, the solar system dust can well contribute 10 mu K ( within an order of magnitude) in the microwaves. This is not only intriguingly close to the magnitude of the anomalies ( about 30 mu K), but also alarmingly above the presently believed magnitude of systematic biases of the WMAP results ( below 5 mu K) and, to an even greater degree, of the future missions with higher sensitivities, e. g., Planck.</P>

        Patients with advanced malignant tumors, including both jaws, is a challenging task for a head and neck surgeon. Current treatment landscape demonstrates good functional, anatomical, and aesthetic results in patients who could previously receive only palliative care. The extensive tissue defects resulting from oncological resections in the head and neck region require immediate reconstruction due to the exposure of vital structures and their contact with the external environment. A patient was operated using a three-team multidisciplinary approach involving simultaneous work of three specialized teams of maxillofacial and reconstructive microsurgeons, as well as an implantologist and a prosthodontist. This approach allowed simultaneous tumor resection with subsequent reconstruction of the intraoperative defect involving bilateral harvesting of two revascularized free fibular osteomusculocutaneous flaps with dental implantation and simultaneous rehabilitation of dentition with crowns.

        Non-linear Responses of Hordeum vulgare Germs to Low Doses of Ionizing Radiation

        N/A Abstract - The induction of chromosome aberrations in Hordeum uulgare germs afterirradiation is studied for the dose range of 10 to 1,000 mGy. The relationship between the frequency of aberrant cells and the absorbed dose is shown to be non-linear and has a dose-independent plateau within the range of 56-467 mGy where the level of cytogenetic damage is statistically significantly distinguished from the spontaneous level. The comparison of the goodness of the experimental data fitting with mathematical models of different complexities, using the most common quantitative criteria, demonstrates the benefit of the piecewise linear model over the linear and polynomial ones in approximating the cytogenetical disturbance frequency. The results of our study support the conclusion about indirect mechanism of chromosome aberrations induced by low doses or dose rates mutagenesis.
