      • Special Olympics coaches

        Sarah Cybulski,Diane M. Culver,Erin Kraft,Tanya Formeris 한국코칭능력개발원 2016 International Journal of Coaching Science Vol.10 No.2

Research has shown that sports are important for people with intellectual disabilities (ID; Mactavish & Dowds, 2003), assisting this population to develop and feel socially included (McConkey, Dowling, Hassan, & Menke, 2013). Coaches can play a role in helping their athletes to develop life skills and Special Olympics (SO) is an organisation with the goals and means to bring positive change to the lives of people with ID (Weiss et al., 2003). Merriam’s (2002) basic interpretive qualitative approach was used to explore the strategies employed by Special Olympics (SO) coaches to promote life skill development. Non-participant observations and two semi-structured interviews were conducted with six coaches. Results revealed seven deductive themes framed by Camiré, Trudel, and Forneris’s (2012) study with high school coaches: (a) having a philosophy aimed at helping athletes develop, (b) building strong coach-athlete relationships, (c) understanding athletes’ pre-existing makeup, (d) providing athletes with opportunities to show their skills, (e) modelling, (f) taking teachable moments, and (g) volunteerism. While the coaches’ adapted these strategies to their SO athletes, perhaps more interesting is the one inductive theme found: being stern and direct.

      • Coaching high-performance sport coaches: The 12-month learning journey of two university head coaches

        Francois Rodrigue,Pierre Trudel,Diane M. Culver 한국코칭능력개발원 2021 International Journal of Coaching Science Vol.15 No.1

In North America, intercollegiate sport is, in many cases, a stepping-stone in building a professional career for its actors. The quality of programs offered to athletes depends on many factors, including quality coaching. Effective university sport coaches have to help athletes reach athletic excellence while managing large-scale programs and supporting their athletes’ holistic development. Recent research on coach learning has suggested that providing coaches access to a personal learning coach offers valuable support because it provides a safe environment to reflect and act on their actual coaching practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the evolution, and to assess the value creation of a 12-month learning journey of two intercollegiate head coaches who were supported by a personal learning coach. Results show that these two coaches’ learning journeys had different learning activities and addressed diverse coaching topics. Collaborating with a personal learning also nurtured the creation of multiple types of values for both coaches’ practice.

Understanding Young Athletes’ Learning at the Youth Olympic Games: A Sport Development Perspective

        Eric W. MacIntosh,Milena M. Parent,Diane Culver 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2022 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.7 No.1

This paper examines young athletes’ experiences, perceptions, and learning derived from participating in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG). We draw from Lillehammer 2016 YOG Games-time field notes, observations, and interviews with 36 young athletes to demonstrate young athletes learning about important aspects of the Olympic Movement through first-hand experience. Young athletes focused on their competition and performance, while benefitting from their interactions with other athletes and with the context, as they engaged in formal and informal learning activities. Findings demonstrate progressive degrees of young ath- lete learning particularly from a development of sport, but also a development through sport perspective. Our study contributes to the examination of Games-time activities, logistics, and processes experienced by the athlete who benefits from a sport (athletic) and social (lifelong) development perspective.
