Preventing brand name blunders in doing business across cultures: Theory and research

        David W. Pan,Alan J. Pan,Berna Mutlu,David Rylander 한국마케팅과학회 2020 마케팅과학연구 Vol.30 No.2

This paper contributes to international business literature by integrating firms’ product competition, consumers’ brand congruence, and contextual enculturation into one framework of analysis. The authors propose and empirically demonstrate how the effectiveness of international branding strategy can be scaled by ethnolinguistic (in)consistency (EL(i)C). The study compares domestic vs. foreign brand assessments on the connection of product-brand fit and brand relevance congruence with their respective ethnolinguistic context in two dissimilar cultures in Asia. The findings offer practical implications for international business managerial actions. This study provides evidence that brand value starts from a firm’s offering, is co-created through consumers’ congruence process, and is enhanced by enculturation conformance or diminished by non-conformance within a given context of market culture. The empirical evidence of this study supports our proposition that the “enculturation determinant logic” per context be integrated with “competitive advantage” logic of firms and “service dominant logic” of market.

Synchronous Urothelial Carcinoma of the Bladder and Urachal Adenoma with Subsequent Malignant Transformation

David Pan,Yeng Kwang Tay,Scott Donnellan 대한비뇨의학회 2012 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.53 No.6

Malignant transformation of urachal adenoma is exceedingly rare, with intestinal metaplasia as the most common contributing mechanism. It is recommended that a urachal adenoma be regarded as a pre-malignant condition and be subject to endoscopic surveillance. A local en block excision of the tumor mass with urachalectomy and umbilectomy results in possible long-term survival. The median survival after platinum-based chemotherapy is limited for patients with extravesical disease. Here we report a case of synchronous urothelial carcinoma of the bladder and urachal adenoma that transformed into adenocarcinoma.

Fano Decoding with Timeout: Queueing Analysis

        W. David Pan,Seong-Moo Yoo 한국전자통신연구원 2006 ETRI Journal Vol.28 No.3

In mobile communications, a class of variable-complexity algorithms for convolutional decoding known as sequential decoding algorithms is of interest since they have a computational time that could vary with changing channel conditions. The Fano algorithm is one well-known version of a sequential decoding algorithm. Since the decoding time of a Fano decoder follows the Pareto distribution, which is a heavy-tailed distribution parameterized by the channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), buffers are required to absorb the variable decoding delays of Fano decoders. Furthermore, since the decoding time drawn by a certain Pareto distribution can become unbounded, a maximum limit is often employed by a practical decoder to limit the worst-case decoding time. In this paper, we investigate the relations between buffer occupancy, decoding time, and channel conditions in a system where the Fano decoder is not allowed to run with unbounded decoding time. A timeout limit is thus imposed so that the decoding will be terminated if the decoding time reaches the limit. We use discrete-time semi-Markov models to describe such a Fano decoding system with timeout limits. Our queuing analysis provides expressions characterizing the average buffer occupancy as a function of channel conditions and timeout limits. Both numerical and simulation results are provided to validate the analytical results.

        Proteomic analysis of Caenorhabditis elegans.

        Jeong, Pan-Young,Na, Keun,Jeong, Mi-Jeong,Chitwood, David,Shim, Yhong-Hee,Paik, Young-Ki Humana Press 2009 METHODS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY -CLIFTON THEN TOTOWA- Vol.519 No.-

<P>Proteomic studies of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans have recently received great attention because this animal model is a useful platform for the in vivo study of various biological problems relevant to human disease. In general, proteomic analysis is carried out in order to address a specific question with respect to differential changes in proteome expression under certain perturbed conditions. In this chapter, we focus on gel-based proteomic analysis of C. elegans subjected to two specific stress conditions during development: induction of the dauer state for whole body protein expression and a temperature shift for egg protein expression. Utilizing these differently perturbed C. elegans protein samples, two-dimensional electrophoresis and differential in-gel electrophoresis methods have led to the discovery of remarkable aspects of the worm's biology. We also provide numerous details about the technical points and protocols necessary for successful experimentation.</P>

      • Cholecystokinin facilitates glutamate release by increasing the number of readily releasable vesicles and releasing probability.

        Deng, Pan-Yue,Xiao, Zhaoyang,Jha, Archana,Ramonet, David,Matsui, Toshimitsu,Leitges, Michael,Shin, Hee-Sup,Porter, James E,Geiger, Jonathan D,Lei, Saobo The Society 2010 The Journal of neuroscience Vol.30 No.15

<P>Cholecystokinin (CCK), a neuropeptide originally discovered in the gastrointestinal tract, is abundantly distributed in the mammalian brains including the hippocampus. Whereas CCK has been shown to increase glutamate concentration in the perfusate of hippocampal slices and in purified rat hippocampal synaptosomes, the cellular and molecular mechanisms whereby CCK modulates glutamatergic function remain unexplored. Here, we examined the effects of CCK on glutamatergic transmission in the hippocampus using whole-cell recordings from hippocampal slices. Application of CCK increased AMPA receptor-mediated EPSCs at perforant path-dentate gyrus granule cell, CA3-CA3 and Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses without effects at mossy fiber-CA3 synapses. CCK-induced increases in AMPA EPSCs were mediated by CCK-2 receptors and were not modulated developmentally and transcriptionally. CCK reduced the coefficient of variation and paired-pulse ratio of AMPA EPSCs suggesting that CCK facilitates presynaptic glutamate release. CCK increased the release probability and the number of readily releasable vesicles with no effects on the rate of recovery from vesicle depletion. CCK-mediated increases in glutamate release required the functions of phospholipase C, intracellular Ca(2+) release and protein kinase Cgamma. CCK released endogenously from hippocampal interneurons facilitated glutamatergic transmission. Our results provide a cellular and molecular mechanism to explain the roles of CCK in the brain.</P>

      • Transient Behavior of Impinging Spray and Film on Cold Surface

( Hujie Pan ),( Di Xiao ),( Min Xu ),( David Hung ),( Xue Dong ) 한국액체미립화학회 2017 한국액체미립화학회 학술강연회 논문집 Vol.2017 No.-

With the increasingly stringent emission regulations, it has become particularly important to reduce engine emissions, especially the soot. Soot emissions under engine cold start conditions are higher than that under warmed up conditions. It has been found that the wall wetting phenomenon of impinging spray affected the formation of soot in the engine cylinder. Meanwhile, previous experimental investigations have shown that the fuel film mass increased with the decrease of the plate temperature while the study of transient behavior of the fuel film is still limited. In this study, simultaneous measurements of macroscopic structure (side view) and its corresponding footprint (bottom view) of impinging spray was conducted using a single-hole, prototype injector in a constant volume chamber. A thermal bath was used to control the temperature of impinging plate with a custom-designed heat exchanger. The macroscopic spray structure was captured by high-speed Mie-scattering imaging and the film was obtained using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) under different conditions. It was found that upon impingement, the radial penetration of the moving spray is longer than that of the film deposited on the surface. Moreover, the film developing process can be separated into 3 stages based on the spreading speed and it is dominated by the viscosity of the fuel due to the small thickness and low Reynolds number of the film flow. In that case, a colder plate slows down the movement of the fuel film, resulting in shorter radial penetration. During the spreading process, wavy structure is found and it moves over the existing boundary to extend to the whole film.

Asian American Values and Attitudes Towards Seeking Mental Health Services

Zubin DeVitre,David Pan 한국상담학회 2020 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.10 No.1

Using Stern et al.’s (1999) Value-Belief-Norm (VBN) Theory as a model of understanding, we examined 75 Asian American adults with an emphasis on internalized values and their attitudes towards seeking mental health services. The sample was primarily Indian and Chinese Americans with no significant differences found between groups. Enculturation and acculturation values emerged as full and partial mediating effects of attitudes towards seeking mental health services, respectively. The study’s results deepen the understanding and add to the limited research regarding Asian Americans’ attitudes towards seeking mental health services and additionally provide insight into where Asian American mental health stigmatization may stem from. Implications of the study’s findings are directed towards mental health practitioners, community centers, and other counseling centers to include more of a focus on Asian Americans’ internalized values when conducting research and attempting to provide community support.

      • Clock Network Optimization With Multibit Flip-Flop Generation Considering Multicorner Multimode Timing Constraint

        Lee, Taehee,Pan, David Z.,Yang, Joon-Sung IEEE 2018 IEEE transactions on computer-aided design of inte Vol.37 No.1

<P>Clock network should be optimized to reduce clock power dissipation. The power efficient clock network can be constructed by multibit flip-flop generation and gated clock tree aware flip-flop clumping to pull flip-flops close to the same integrated clock gating cell. It is capable of providing an attractive solution to reduce clock power. This paper considers multicorner and multimode timing constraints for the two combined approach. This proposed method is applied to five industrial digital intellectual property blocks of state-of-the-art mobile system-on-a-chip fabricated in 14-nm CMOS process. Experimental results show that MBFF generation algorithm achieves 22% clock power reduction. Applying a gated clock tree aware flip-flop clumping on top of the MBFF generation further reduces the power to around 32%.</P>

      • Effects of sterols on the development and aging of Caenorhabditis elegans.

        Lee, Eun-Young,Jeong, Pan-Young,Kim, Sun-Young,Shim, Yhong-Hee,Chitwood, David J,Paik, Young-Ki Humana Press 2009 Methods in molecular biology Vol.462 No.-

<P>Although Caenorhabditis elegans lacks several components of the de novo sterol biosynthetic pathway, it requires sterols as essential nutrients. Supplemental cholesterol undergoes extensive enzymatic modification in C. elegans to form certain sterols of unknown function. Since sterol metabolism in C. elegans differs from that in other species, such as mammals and yeast, it is important to examine how sterols regulate worm physiology. To examine the functions of sterols in C. elegans, a sterol-feeding experiment was carried out and several critical parameters, such as brood size, growth rate, and life span, were measured. In addition, the change in lipid distribution in C. elegans can be both qualitatively and quantitatively determined by various methods, including staining and chromatographic techniques. Taken together, the effects of sterols on C. elegans are very prominent and can be easily assessed using the techniques described here.</P>

      • Autonomous Blimp Control using Reinforcement Learning

        Yiwei Liu,Zengxi Pan,David Stirling,Fazel Naghdy 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

This paper presents a new approach for navigation control of an autonomous blimp using an intelligent reinforcement learning algorithm. Compared to the traditional model based control methods, this control strategy does not require a dynamic model of the blimp, which provides huge advantage in many practical situations where the blimp system model is either hard to acquire or too complicated to apply. As the blimp will acquire a range of the pilot skills through a learning and rewarding mechanism during actual navigation trials, it can automatically account for the environmental changes during the navigation. The simulation data generated from a Webots Robotics Simulator (WRS) demonstrate satisfactory results for planar steering motion control. Reinforcement learning based blimp control is shown to be a promising and effective solution for autonomous navigation tasks.
