There are factors that condition the evolution of regional disparities in a country. In Mexico, the manufacturing sector has moved towards a regionalization of production. The objective of this research is to analyze theoretically the integration, evolution and interregional competition in the Mexican manufacturing sector, the disparities in its socioeconomic development and the measurement of the economic and social transformation from 1993 to 2008. The results show that the dynamism of the sector was based on the use of the conjunctures generated by the convergence of the productivity levels of the Japanese and European North American industries, resulting in increased competitive pressures. The productivity and growth of the sector does not ensure that social and economic levels are reached that indicate a sustained regional development process; hence, it is necessary to initiate a de-localization process or to establish new industries with a certain degree of spatial dispersion.

Purpose: Prenatal diagnosis of cardiac rhabdomyoma is suggestive of the presence of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), which is commonly associated with epilepsy. This study investigated the diagnostic rate of TSC, the incidence and treatment outcomes of epilepsy, and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 50 patients with fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma between 1995 and 2017 at the Asan Medical Center Children’s Hospital. Twelve patients were excluded because of incomplete data or a follow-up of less than 1 year. Patients’ medical records were assessed for the occurrence of epilepsy during follow-up, including treatment and outcomes, electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging, genetic analysis findings, and neurodevelopmental status. Results: Thirty-eight patients (23 males) were diagnosed with TSC. Twenty-eight (73.7%) developed epilepsy. Infantile spasms were observed in 22 patients (78.6%), and 21 (95.5%) received vigabatrin as the first treatment, achieving subsequent freedom from seizures. At the final evaluation, 17 patients (60%) were seizure-free for over 12 months. Seizure remission was not associated with seizure onset age, the presence of cortical tubers, or TSC1/2 mutations. Patients with epilepsy had a higher prevalence of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes than did those without epilepsy (P=0.008). Conclusion: A high TSC diagnostic rate and a high incidence of early-onset epilepsy were observed in patients with prenatal cardiac rhabdomyoma, and children with TSC and epilepsy showed poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Therefore, monitoring with electroencephalography follow-up of infants with fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma may be helpful for the early detection and treatment of epilepsy.

Kefir is a probiotic food. Probiotics have shown to be beneficial to health, and are currently of great interest to the food industry. Hence, this study was carried out to evaluate the lactase activity of kefir-isolated lactic acid bacteria. Three strains, Lactobacillu kefiri DH5 isolated from the kefir grains and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis and Bifidobacteria longum 720, commercial probiotic LAB, were fermented in 10% reconstituted nonfat dry milk suspensions and incubated at 37℃ for 48 h, and then analyzed for various saccarides by HPLC. The results showed that changes in the concentrations of lactose and galactose were significantly decreased and increased, respectively (p<0.05), but all 3 probiotic strains tested in this study showed no increase in glucose concentration during 48 h of incubation. Both DH5 and BL720 showed high lactase activities (p <0.05), whereas BLC exhibited the lowest activity. Additionally, all three lactic acid bacteria showed high tagatose, but did not show high xylose and sedoheptulose. Finally, DH5, a kefir-isolated LAB, may have similar characteristics and properties to typical Bifidobacterium spp. and showed higher lactase activity than commercial Bifidobacterium spp.

In this study, the effects of aqueous extracts from Zygophyllum fabago L. on two plant phytopathogenic fungal species (namely, Fusarium oxyosporum f. sp. melonis and Pythium aphanidermatum) were studied under laboratory conditions. The plant extracts (10% w/v) were prepared by using deionized water and fresh tissues. Dilutions (2, 4, 6, and 8% w/v) were obtained to test their effect on the mycelial growth of the phytopathogenic species. Additionally, the recovery of the fungi after their exposure to the Z. fabago extract was analyzed. The plant extracts inhibited the growth of F. oxyosporum and P. aphanidermatum (the maximum mean inhibition that was recorded with the 10% w/v extracts was 42.9% and 85.3%, respectively). A second series of experiments demonstrated the existence of residual effects in both species. The amount of residual inhibition by the 10% w/v extracts was 28.6% in F. oxyosporum and 53.8% in P. aphanidermatum. A dose-response was clearly observed in P. aphanidermatum, while an increase in extract concentration was not associated with a significantly greater reduction in the growth of F. oxyosporum. These findings give insights into the potential of Z. fabago as a growth inhibitor of F. oxyosporum and P. aphanidermatum, thus suggesting an interesting potential role for this common weed as a source of natural fungicides.

( Dana Jeong ),( Dong-hyeon Kim ),( Jung-whan Chon ),( Kwang-young Song ),( Hyunsook Kim ),( Kun-ho Seo ) 한국유가공기술과학회 2017 Journal of Dairy Science and Biotechnology (JMSB) Vol.35 No.3
Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is an important food, oil, and fiber crop of the family Linaceae. Although flaxseed has been consumed as a food ingredient for several centuries, its nutritional benefits have not yet been completely established. Flaxseed is a good source of lignans, nonstarch polysaccharides, and high-quality proteins. Hence, in this study, we aimed to prepare a bioactive kefir containing flaxseed and to examine the physicochemical characteristics of kefir containing different concentrations of flaxseed. We investigated the pH, and sensory evaluation of bioactive Kefir containing different concentrations of flaxseed. We investigated the pH, total anthocyanins (TAs), and sensory evaluation of bioactive Kefir containing different concentrations of flaxseed. The pH of this bioactive kefir decreased, whereas the TA content increased with increasing incubation time; however, these parameters were not affected by the amount of added flaxseed. As the addition rate of flaxseed increased, the scores for overall acceptability, texture, color, flavor, and taste in sensory evaluations were generally the same as or lower than the control. There were no significant differences in overall acceptability, texture, color, flavor, and taste between the control and treated groups. Therefore, further studies are needed to develop methods for production of health-improving kefir as a dietary supplement based on the functional properties of flaxseed.

The global consumption of fructose in the form of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has increased considerably over the past several decades. The current intake of HFCS exceeds that of other major caloric sweeteners such as sucrose. Fructose has potentially adverse effects on human metabolism. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the monosaccharide contents of 13 sweetened milk-based beverages by using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total monosaccharide (fructose and glucose) contents of various sweetened milk-based beverages ranged from 0.60 g/100 mL (cheese) to 26.03 g/100 mL (maple caramel snack), while milk showed only 0 g/100 mL monosaccharides. The fructose-to-glucose ratio of various popular sweetened milk-based beverages ranged from not-detected (ND) to 2.24 g/100 mL, but the content of glucose was higher than that of fructose in only three samples, namely, strawberry flavored milk, shrimp chips, and maple caramel snack. The analyzed results revealed important basic information about monosaccharides in various milk-based sweetened beverages, presenting ideas for future fructose research.
