Key role of peptidoglycan on acrylamide binding by lactic acid bacteria

The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of four peptidoglycan (PGN) from different lactic acid bacteria to bind acrylamide (AA) and to identify the binding mechanism. In this study, to clarify the possible binding interactions among AA and components of PGN, chemical components, surface structure, amino acids component, and functional groups of peptidoglycans were studied. It was found that PGN from Lactobacillus plantarum 1.0065 had the highest ability to bind AA with 87%. Furthermore, a significant positive relation was found between the carbohydrate content of PGN and percentage of bind AA, and the content of four specific amino acids of PGN and AA binding ability were also positive correlated. Thereinto, alanine of PGN had a significant impact on AA binding among four amino acids. Additionally, the C–O (carboxyl, polysaccharides, and arene), C=O amide, and N–H amines groups of PGN were involved in AA binding.
Three degrees of freedom chatter stability prediction in the milling process

Chatter in the cutting process has a great influence on workpiece surface quality, machining efficiency, and service life of the machine tool. This work presents three degrees of freedom (DOF) dynamic model applied to tool chatter for thin-walled structures in milling. Combined with dynamic cutting force modelling in the radial, axial and tangential directions, the stability chart was solved by adopting an improved semi-discretization method in time domain. And the stability prediction model considering regenerative effect was validated by cutting tests with specific axial depth of cut and spindle speed. The cutting experimental results performed at different axial depth of cuts were in accordance with predicted stability lobe diagram (SLD). Moreover, the effects of cutting contact angle and radial immersion ratio on SLD were also analyzed. The study results show that the dynamic model could make a good prediction of chatter stability, and the established approach is high efficient in predicting the chatter stability lobe considering the actual situation.

In this study, white ginseng was used as the raw material, which was fermented with Paecilomyces hepiali through solid culture medium, to produce ginsenosides with modified chemical composition. The characteristic chemical markers of the products thus produced were investigated using rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RRLCeQTOFeMS). Chemical profiling data were obtained, which were then subjected to multivariate statistical analysis for the systematic comparison of active ingredients in white ginseng and fermented ginseng to understand the beneficial properties of ginsenoside metabolites. In addition, the effects of these components on biological activity were investigated to understand the improvements in the phagocytic function of macrophages in zebrafish. According to the established RRLCeQTOFeMS chemical profiling, the contents in ginsenosides of high molecular weight, especially malonylated protopanaxadiol ginsenosides, were slightly reduced due to the fermentation, which were hydrolyzed into rare and minor ginsenosides. Moreover, the facilitation of macrophage phagocytic function in zebrafish following treatment with different ginseng extracts confirmed that the fermented ginseng is superior to white ginseng. Our results prove that there is a profound change in chemical constituents of ginsenosides during the fermentation process, which has a significant effect on the biological activity of these compounds.
Role of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in the Management of Advanced Ovarian Cancer

Objective: To analyze efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 107 patients with advanced ovarian cancer undergoing cytoreductive surgery were divided into a neoadjuvant chemotherapy group (n=61) and a primary debulking group (n=46) and retrospectively analyzed. Platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy was applied to both groups after cytoreductive surgery ande overall and progression-free survival times were calculated. Results: No significant difference was observed in duration of hospitalization ($20.8{\pm}6.1$ vs. $20.2{\pm}5.4$ days, p>0.05). The operation time of neoadjuvant chemotherapy group was shorter than the initial surgery group ($3.1{\pm}0.7$ vs. $3.4{\pm}0.8$ h, p<0.05). There were no significant differences in median overall survival time between neoadjuvant chemotherapy group and surgery group (42 vs. 55 months, p>0.05). Similarly, there was no difference in median progression-free survival between neoadjuvant chemotherapy group and surgery group (16 vs. 17 months, p>0.05). The surgical residual tumor size demonstrated no significant difference between initial surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy groups (p>0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that more than 3 cycles of regimen with neoadjuvant chemotherapy was associated with more resistance to chemotherapy compared with patients without receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (OR: 5.962, 95%CI: 1.184-30.030, p<0.05). Conclusions:Neoadjuvant chemotherapy can shorten the operation time. However, it does not improve survival rates of advanced ovarian cancer patients.

Unsupervised learning has shown good performance on image, video and audio classification tasks, and much progress has been made so far. It studies how systems can learn to represent particular input patterns in a way that reflects the statistical structure of the overall collection of input patterns. Many promising deep learning systems are commonly trained by the greedy layerwise unsupervised learning manner. The performance of these deep learning architectures benefits from the unsupervised learning ability to disentangling the abstractions and picking out the useful features. However, the existing unsupervised learning algorithms are often difficult to train partly because of the requirement of extensive hyperparameters. The tuning of these hyperparameters is a laborious task that requires expert knowledge, rules of thumb or extensive search. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective unsupervised feature learning algorithm for image classification, which exploits an explicit optimizing way for population and lifetime sparsity. Firstly, a sparse target matrix is built by the competitive rules. Then, the sparse features are optimized by means of minimizing the Euclidean norm (L<sub>2</sub>) error between the sparse target and the competitive layer outputs. Finally, a classifier is trained using the obtained sparse features. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves good performance for image classification, and provides discriminative features that generalize well.

<P>A part of the titanium dental implant surface, which will meet connective tissue after being inserted in mandibular bone, was coated with calcium phosphate by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). Twenty-four implants of coated and uncoated group were randomly placed in mandibles after 3 months of premolars extraction in beagle dogs. All the implants were firmly anchored in the bone and had no clinical signs of peri-implant inflammation after 3-month insertion. The probing depth in calcium phosphate coated group is 1.9±0.2 mm, less than in control group (2.1±0.2 mm) (p<0.05). Most of the probing sites tended to bleed upon probing in two groups. It might indicate that the calcium phosphate coating has the potential to promote soft tissue integration.</P>
