        Teaching SF: A Way to Explore Human s Stance in the Era of Advanced Science and Technology in Lois Lowry s The Giver

        The present study suggests that science fiction is a beneficial teaching resource to encourage students to develop ethical creativity. Liberal arts education is to cultivate a free and/or flexible thinker and introspect humanity and reading literary texts can help enhance ethicality as well as empathic understanding under the contexts of social acts of human relationships and interactions. Including these two features, science fiction suggests how to cope with two-faced future technology with both benefits and harm for humankind. This quality of science fiction helps students think critically but flexibly so as to make thoughtful choices considering humanity. Lowry s The Giver throws a question on the balance between technology and humanity, showing that memory and emotion are the most fundamental and essential value to be true humans. This study presents the reason why literature is beneficial to construct ethical reasoning by identifying the two key factors - memory and emotion - to understand humans and humanity. Also, the study attempts to share some ideas of how to adopt the text to help students enhance ethical/moral thinking skills, discussing the idea of humanity.

      • Classroom Factors Considered for Second Language Acquisition

        본 연구는 교실이라는 특정한 장소에 제2 언어 습득에 결정적인 영향을 주는 요인들이 있음을 주목하였다. 학습자들의 사회적 정체성과 사회경제적 지위, 사회환경에 의해 영향을 받는 교수방식과 학습방식, 특정한 주제에 대해 학습자가 가지고 있는 사전지식 등은 학습자들이 교실수업에 참여하면서 그들과 함께 동시에 교실에 존재하게 되는 요인들인데 이러한 것들이 교수자와 학습자 간, 또는 학습자와 학습자 간의 상호작용에서 서로에게 영향을 끼치게 된다. 또 한가지 주목한 것은 교수자의 언어습득에 관한 개인적인 지식과 신념에 관한 것인데, 이 것들이 교실안에서 어떻게 작용하면서 학습자들의 제2언어 습득에 기여를 하는가를 살펴보았다. 언어를 배우는 교실은 다른 교실과는 달리 교수자와 학습자가 대화를 주고받으며 활발히 참여하여 목표언어 학습을 이루는 매우 역동적인 곳이다. 결론적으로, 교실은 교수자가 주도해서 수업을 하는 곳이라는 전통적인 틀을 깨고 학습자가 중심이 되어 자발적 수업을 하는 곳이어야 하고, 그래서 교수자는 학습자들을 가르친다기 보다는 돕는 역할을 해야 한다는 것이다.

        Risk Factors of Female Breast Cancer in Vietnam: A Case-Control Study

        Purpose Rates of women with breast cancer have increased rapidly in recent years in Vietnam, with over 10,000 new patients contracting the disease every year. This study was conducted to identify demographic, reproductive and lifestyle risk factors for breast cancer in Vietnam. Materials and Methods Breast density, demographic, reproductive and lifestyle data of 269 women with breast cancer and 519 age-matched controls were collected in the two largest oncology hospitals in Vietnam (one in the north and one in the south). Baseline differences between cases and controls in all women, premenopausal and postmenopausal women were assessed using chi-squared tests and independent t tests. Conditional logistic regression was used to derive odds ratios (OR) for factors that had statistically significant associations with breast cancer. Results Vietnamese women with breast cancer were significantly more likely to have a breast density > 75% (OR, 1.7), be younger than 14 years at first menstrual period (OR, 2.2), be postmenopausal (OR, 2.0), have less than three pregnancies (OR, 2.1), and have less than two babies (OR, 1.7). High breast density (OR, 1.6), early age at first menstrual period (OR, 2.6), low number of pregnancies (OR, 2.3), hormone use (OR, 1.8), and no physical activities (OR, 2.2) were significantly associated with breast cancer among premenopausal women, while breast density (OR, 2.0), age at first menstrual period (OR, 1.8), number of pregnancies (OR, 2.3), and number of live births (OR, 2.4) were the risk factors for postmenopausal women. Conclusion Breast density, age at first menarche, menopause status, number of pregnancies, number of babies born, hormone use and physical activities were significantly associated with breast cancer in Vietnamese women.

        Redesign, Reconstruction, and Directed Extension of the Brevibacterium linens C40 Carotenoid Pathway in Escherichia coli

        <B>ABSTRACT</B><P>In this study, the carotenoid biosynthetic pathways of <I>Brevibacterium linens</I> DSMZ 20426 were reconstructed, redesigned, and extended with additional carotenoid-modifying enzymes of other sources in a heterologous host <I>Escherichia coli</I>. The modular lycopene pathway synthesized an unexpected carotenoid structure, 3,4-didehydrolycopene, as well as lycopene. Extension of the novel 3,4-didehydrolycopene pathway with the mutant <I>Pantoea</I> lycopene cyclase CrtY2 and the <I>Rhodobacter</I> spheroidene monooxygenase CrtA generated monocyclic torulene and acyclic oxocarotenoids, respectively. The reconstructed β-carotene pathway synthesized an unexpected 7,8-dihydro-β-carotene in addition to β-carotene. Extension of the β-carotene pathway with the <I>B. linens</I> β-ring desaturase CrtU and <I>Pantoea</I> β-carotene hydroxylase CrtZ generated asymmetric carotenoid agelaxanthin A, which had one aromatic ring at the one end of carotene backbone and one hydroxyl group at the other end, as well as aromatic carotenoid isorenieratene and dihydroxy carotenoid zeaxanthin. These results demonstrate that reconstruction of the biosynthetic pathways and extension with promiscuous enzymes in a heterologous host holds promise as a rational strategy for generating structurally diverse compounds that are hardly accessible in nature.</P>
