      • Optimization of Production System Based on Lean Thinking

        Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to find hidden waste and non-value- added activities during the whole process of M company, and then optimize production processes, shorten the production cycle, improve production efficiency, and ultimately achieve just-in-time production mode which response to customer demand rapidly. Design/methodology/approach: In order to identify and eliminate such kind of non-value added waste, the authors draw a current value stream map and a future value stream map of the SM6 series products in one electric- equipment-manufacturing enterprise. By analyzing the value stream mapping of the whole process of SM6 series products, the authors find hidden wastes and non-value-added activities, and then the authors use industrial engineering "ECRS principle" and "5W2H principle” to adjust and make new production plan model, including the analysis and evaluation of the production process, production line layout and other aspects, then, the authors optimize the working process and set up a new production process. Findings and Originality/value: By using Kanban and other lean concepts and techniques, the authors finally achieved pull mode of production (just-in-time production), and shorten production cycle, reduce inventory of semi-finished product and end product, eliminate excess production, and save labor cost, realize the "5S" management mode effectively. Practical implications: The successful application of pull mode of production in the SM6 series products has set an example in implementing lean activities for the company’s other product series and most other manufacturing enterprise, Social implications: it also has a significance guiding for value stream mapping and lean thinking to be practiced in Chinese manufacturing enterprise and other industries.

        Rhamnolipids amendment improves soil properties and enhances microecological functions in the saline-alkali soil

        A laboratory-scale study was conducted to investigate the effect of rhamnolipids (RLs) supplement on the amelioration of saline-alkali soils. The RLs supplement improved the soil aggregates stability and promoted the formation of macro-aggregates which increased by up to 10.84% and 15.92% in alkaline soil and saline soil, respectively. In addition, RLs amendment led to a pH reduction from initial 8.87 to 7.80-7.84 in alkaline soil, and a salt rejection up to 20.72% in saline soil, remarkably alleviating the saline-alkali stress on microorganisms and plants. Meanwhile, microbial growth and activity as well as the seed germination performance were greatly improved in both types of soil. Furthermore, RLs addition greatly altered the microbial community structure and supported the proliferation of bacterial species (e.g., Pseudomonas oleovorans, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Alcanivorax dieselolei) that favored the improvement of soil properties and nutrients circulation, thus markedly enhancing the microecological functions including carbon and nitrogen metabolisms. Further supplement of γ-PGA only exhibited promoting effect on aggregates formation and microbial growth and activity. The findings obtained in this study prove the application of RLs as a promising approach for saline-alkali soil amelioration.

        Steganalysis of adaptive JPEG steganography by selecting DCT coefficients according to embedding distortion

        According to the characteristics of adaptive JPEG steganography which determines the changed DCT coefficients based on embedding distortion, a new steganalysis method by selecting the DCT coefficients with small distortion values is proposed. Firstly, the principle of adaptive JPEG steganography through minimizing distortion is introduced. Secondly, the practicability of selecting the changed DCT coefficients according to distortion values is studied. Thirdly, the proposed steganalysis method is given and the embedding sensitivity of the steganalysis feature extracted from the selected DCT coefficients is analyzed. Lastly, the implement processes of the proposed method are presented and analyzed in details. In the experiments, PQt, PQe and J-UNIWARD steganography are used as examples to verify the effect of the proposed steganalysis method for adaptive JPEG steganography. A serial experimental results show the detection accuracy can be improved obviously, especially when the payload is relatively low.

        Nonlinear Finite Element Modeling of Two-stage Energy Dissipation Device with Low-yield-point Steel

        Equipped with many advantages, such as low yield strength, low yield ratio, high elongation, severe plastic deformation and good energy dissipation ability, low-yield-point steel is very suitable for use in metal energy dissipation devices. Based on different materials (Q235 steel and low-yield-point steel) and different parabola openings, two types of energy dissipation steel plates underwent different yield displacements and then were assembled into a new open-hole energy dissipation device, which could achieve the goal of two-stage energy dissipation under small and large earthquakes. To obtain the failure modes and energy dissipation mechanism under the low reversed cyclic horizontal loads and observe relevant hysteretic curves and skeleton curves, the new energy dissipation device was studied and analyzed by means of theoretical analysis, experimental research, and numerical simulation analysis. Based on parametric analyses, the effects of the height, thickness and opening coefficient of the steel plate on the energy dissipation ability of the new energy dissipation device were emphasized. Thus, the key parameters affecting the energy dissipation behavior were obtained. Finally, a force-restoring model of the new energy dissipation device was put forward, and the calculation formulas were given for many parameters, including stiffness, yield displacement, yield load, ultimate displacement and ultimate load. The results show that the new open-hole energy dissipation device has the advantages of superior energy dissipation performance, obvious energy dissipation in two stages, and wide application prospects in structural seismic design.

        Prebiotic Potential of Xylooligosaccharides Derived from Corn Cobs and Their In Vitro Antioxidant Activity When Combined with Lactobacillus

        In the present work, the in vitro prebiotic activity of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) derived from corn cobs combined with Lactobacillus plantarum, a probiotic microorganism, was determined.These probiotics exhibited different growth characteristics depending on strain specificity. L. plantarum S2 cells were denser and their growth rates were higher when cultured on XOS. Acetate was found to be the major short-chain fatty acid produced as the end-product of fermentation, and its amount varied from 1.50 to 1.78 mg/ml. The antimicrobial activity of XOS combined with L. plantarum S2 was determined against gastrointestinal pathogens. The results showed that XOS proved to be an effective substrate, enhancing antimicrobial activity for L. plantarum S2. In vivo evaluation of the influence of XOS and L. plantarum S2, used both alone and together, on the intestinal microbiota in a mouse model showed that XOS combined with L. plantarum S2 could increase the viable lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in mice feces and decrease the viable Enterococcus, Enterobacter, and Clostridia spp. Furthermore, in the in vitro antioxidant assay, XOS combined with L. plantarum S2 possessed significant 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl, 2,2’-azino-bis, and superoxide anion radical-scavenging activities, and the combinations showed better antioxidant activity than either XOS or L. plantarum S2 alone.

        Comparative Genomic Analysis Reveals That the 20K and 38K Prophages in Listeria monocytogenes Serovar 4a Strains Lm850658 and M7 Contribute to Genetic Diversity but Not to Virulence

        Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen of considerable genetic diversity with varying pathogenicity. Initially, we found that the strain M7 was far less pathogenic than the strain Lm850658 though both are serovar 4a strains belonging to the lineage III. Comparative genomic approaches were then attempted to decipher the genetic basis that might govern the strain-dependent pathotypes. There are 2,761 coding sequences of 100% nucleotide identity between the two strains, accounting for 95.7% of the total genes in Lm850658 and 92.7% in M7. Lm850658 contains 33 specific genes, including a novel 20K prophage whereas strain M7 has 130 specific genes, including two large prophages (38K and 44K). To examine the roles of these specific prophages in pathogenicity, the 20K and 38K prophages were deleted from their respective strains. There were virtually no differences of pathogenicity between the deletion mutants and their parent strains, although some putative virulent factors like VirB4 are present in the 20K region or holin-lysin in the 38K region. In silico PCR analysis of 29 listeria genomes show that only strain SLCC2540 has the same 18 bp integration hotspot as Lm850658, whereas the sequence identity of their 20K prophages is very low (21.3%). The 38K and 44K prophages are located in two other different hotspots and are conserved in low virulent strains M7, HCC23, and L99. In conclusion, the 20K and 38K prophages of L. monocytogenes serovar 4a strains Lm850658 and M7 are not related to virulence but contribute to genetic diversity.
