Magnetic Fe₃O₄@polystyrene (PS) nanoscale composite particles were fabricated using a unique Shirasu porous-glass membrane technique and used as additives to a magnetorheological (MR) suspension with magnetic carbonyl-iron (CI) particles. The morphology of the fabricated Fe₃O₄@PS composites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The effects of the Fe₃O₄@PS composite particle additive on its MR behavior was examined using a rotation rheometer under an applied magnetic field. The results revealed improved MR behavior, such as higher storage and loss moduli, and elastic yield stress compared to those of the pure CIbased MR suspension under an external magnetic field.

Jin, Yan,Kim, Yeon-Ju,Jeon, Ji-Na,Wang, Chao,Min, Jin-Woo,Noh, Hae-Yong,Yang, Deok-Chun Kluwer Academic 2015 Plant foods for human nutrition Vol.70 No.2

A systematic comparison of the ginsenosides and physicochemical properties of white ginseng (WG), red ginseng (RG) and black ginseng (BG) was performed. The purpose of the present study was to identify the effects of the physicochemical properties by steaming process. During the steaming process, ginsenosides transform into specific ginsenosides by hydrolysis, dehydration and isomerization at C-3, C-6 or C-20. Steaming ginseng led to a significant increase in reducing sugar, acidic polysaccharide and phenolic compounds content. Antioxidative properties were investigated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, compared with BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole). RG and BG exhibited higher antioxidant activity than WG. The maximum residue level for Benzo(a)pyrene was established to 5 μg/kg in food products. The levels of benzo(a)pyrene in WG and RG were not detected. Benzo(a)pyrene was detected in the BG, the content was 0.17 μg/kg. The scientific achievements of the present study could help consumers to choose different type of ginseng products available on the market.

Jin, Chun Yan,Yun, Jeonghoon,Kim, Jung,Yang, Daejong,Kim, Dong Hwan,Ahn, Jae Hyuk,Lee, Kwang-Cheol,Park, Inkyu RSC Pub 2014 Nanoscale Vol.6 No.23

We have proposed a new method for the multiplexed synthesis of heterogeneous nanostructures using a top-down fabricated nanowire heater array. Hydrothermally synthesized nanostructures can be grown only on the heated nanowire through nanoscale temperature control using a Joule heated nanowire. We have demonstrated the selective synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and copper oxide (CuO) nanostructures, as well as their surface modification with noble metal nanoparticles, using a nanowire heater array. Furthermore, we could fabricate an array of heterogeneous nanostructures via Joule heating of individual nanowire heaters and changing of the precursor solutions in a sequential manner. We have formed a parallel array of palladium (Pd) coated ZnO nanowires and gold (Au) coated ZnO nanowires, as well as a parallel array of ZnO nanowires and CuO nanospikes, in the microscale region by using the developed method.

The GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DCY69(T) is JX233806. A Gram-reaction-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, non-gliding motile strain, designated strain DCY69(T), was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field in the Republic of Korea. Colonies of strain DCY69(T) were circular, 0.5-1.5 mm diameter, yellow, and convex on an R2A agar plate after 2 days. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DCY69(T) belonged to the genus Flavobacterium with 90.5-98.3% gene sequence similarity. The major predominant quinone was MK-6. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15:0, iso-C17:0 3-OH, iso-C15:0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (containing C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and unidentified polar lipids (L1, L2). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain DCY69(T) was 35.0mol%. The strain DCY69(T) transformed ginsenoside Rb1 into Rd and F2. Based on the polyphasic taxonomic data, strain DCY69(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium panaciterrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY69(T)(= KCTC 32392(T) = JCM 19161(T)), isolated from the soil of a ginseng field in the Republic of Korea.

Shu, Jian,Li, Cheng-Guang,Liu, Yang-Chen,Yan, Xiao-Chun,Xu, Xu,Huang, Xin-En,Cao, Jie,Li, Ying,Lu, Yan-Yan,Wu, Xue-Yan,Liu, Jin,Xiang, Jin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.5
Objective: To compare expression level of serum tumor associated materials (TAM) with several conventional serum tumor biomarkers, eg., carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen19-9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA15-3), alpha-fetoprotein(AFP), in selected solid tumors. Methods: Patients diagnosed histologically or cytologically with liver, breast, esophageal, gastric, colorectal or pancreatic cancers were enrolled into this study. After diagnosis, the level of TAM was determined by chemical colorimetry, and levels of conventional tumor markers was measured by chemiluminescence methods. Results: A total of 560 patients were enrolled into this study. No statistically significant difference was detected in TAM and the above mentioned tumor biomarkers in terms of their positivity and negativity ( P>0. 05). Conclusions: Detection of TAM in liver, breast, esophageal, gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer patients demonstrates a good accordance with CEA, CA199, CA153, and AFP, thus suggesting that further study is warranted to verify whether TAM could be a surrogate for these conventional biomarkers.
Allium hookeri Inhibits Inflammation in OVA-induced Allergic Rhinitis in Mice via NF-κB Pathway
Yan Jing Fan,Juan Jin,Chun Hua Piao,Thi Van Nguyen,김유석,채옥희,송창호 대한체질인류학회 2023 해부·생물인류학 (Anat Biol Anthropol) Vol.36 No.3
Allium hookeri (A. hookeri) has been used as a traditional medicine for many years in the Southeast Asian region. Multiple investigations have demonstrated its role in preventing of microbial infection, immune regulation, coronary thrombosis, and atherosclerosis has been demonstrated by several studies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the suppressing effect of A. hookeri on the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) murine model. In this study, AR was induced in BALB/c mice by using OVA emulsified in aluminum on days 1, 8 and 15. Then, nasally challenged with OVA on days 22 to 28. On days 16 to 28, OVA-induced mice were treated either with A. hookeri (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) or Dexamethasone (Dex, 2.5 mg/kg) by oral gavage. On days 22 to 28, mice received either A. hookeri (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) or Dexamethasone (Dex, 2.5 mg/kg) an hour before the OVA challenge. The mice in the control group were not sensitized, treated, or tested. In this study, A. hookeri ameliorated nasal symptoms include rubbing and sneezing; reduced thickness of nasal mucosa; alleviated goblet cell hyperplasia and eosinophil infiltration in the nasal mucosa; decreased levels of OVA-specific IgE and OVA-specific IgG1 in serum; and suppressed Th2 (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13) cytokines level in nasal lavage fluid (NALF). In addition, A. hookeri recovered the production of Th1 (IL-12 and IFN-γ) cytokines level in NALF, inhibited the inflammation through NF-κB pathway. Collectively, our results suggest that A. hookeri effectively protects against AR by regulating Th1/Th2 cytokines imbalance and NF-κB mechanisms. These observations suggest A. hookeri as a potential therapeutic option for AR.
