      • Korea Army’s Value as a Way to Character Education for Military Personnel

        Purpose: This paper intends to identify the core values of the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) and the foundation for character education. The ROKA aims to win the ground war as the central force of national defense. Method: In order to accomplish the research purpose, the researcher critically reviewed the literature related to the Korea Army value and character education including policy reports, army papers, and academic articles. Results: The ROKA is trying to establish a new military culture and value system to responds to changes from the internal and external environment and to educate the so-called MZ generation soldiers who are majority of the military personnel. Value refers to a resource that satisfies an individual's needs in a subjective sense, and a hierarchy occurs according to an individual's tendency or desire. If these values persist for a long time, they will also have a hierarchy at the social level, too. In addition, an organizational culture is formed in the direction of pursuing the values even in the military organizations. Conclusion: In this respect, this paper presents the values that the ROKA pursues, the organizational culture formed around these values, and the directions of character education system to imbue the core values.

      • Importance-Practice Analysis (IPA) of Korean Military Cadets Values

        The purpose of this study was to analyze the degree of recognition and implementation of Korean military cadets values in line with the era of Defense Reform 2. It is also in the analysis to derive areas that need to be improved in the education of cadets values. For the research purpose, the researcher sampled 157 military cadets of K Military Academy and administered a questionnaire measuring the degree of recognition and implementation of the three Republic of Korea Army values: Sacrifice for the Country, Completion of the Missions, and Mutual Respect. The results of the survey showed that the Korea military cadets have the highest degree of perception of the value of mutual respect, but show relatively low recognition of the value of completion of mission. Therefore, the professors and disciplinary officers of the military academy need to educate the militar cadets to pay more attention to the value of the completion of missions. The completion of responsibility requires high cognitive abilities such as mission analysis, data collection and analysis, comprehensive, policy making and comparison, decision making, and implementation planning to successfully complete the task based on its definitive sensitivity, such as acceptance and active response. It also requires the ability of performance areas such as follow-up review and development measures, briefings, and task performance.

      • Influence of Demographic Variables of the Multicultural Families on their Children’s School Adaptation and Bullying

        Purpose: This study aims to identify the effect of the demographic variables (sex, immigrant mothers’ nationality, and domestic conversation language) on the multicultural adolescents’ school adaptation and bullying experience. Method: In order to accomplish the research purposes, the researcher analyzed the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Survey (MAPS) with the statistical analysis method of multigroup structural equation modeling (MSEM). Total survey respondents were 2,271 multicultural adolescents and the survey was conducted 2019 by Korea Youth Policy Institute (KYPI). Results: As a result of multigroup structural equation model analysis, the null model which hypothesized structural invariance between groups showed poor model fit. The alternative models, however, demonstrated better fit. Conclusion: First, there is significant differences in parental attitude effect on male and female multicultural adolescents’ school adaptation and bullying-suffering. The parents’ appropriate supervision has stronger positive effect on female multicultural adolescent group than male adolescent group. Second, there is significant difference in parental attitude effect between Chinese and Vietnamese mothers on their adolescents’ school adaptation and bullyingsuffering. The immigrant Chinese mothers’ parental supervision has stronger positive effect on their children’s school adaptation than immigrant Vietnamese mothers’ parental supervision. Third, there is significant difference in parental attitude effect between Korean-only and mixed language group in domestic conversation. The mixed language group immigrant mothers’ parental attitude has slightly stronger positive effect on their adolescents’ school adaptation while the Korean-only immigrant mothers’ neglectful attitude more harmful effect on their adolescents’ bullying-suffering.

      • Influence of Cadet Ceremony on the Korean Military Cadets' IDENTITY

        Purpose: The purposes of this study are, first, to investigate the effect of ceremonial events and honor systems conducted by the Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon (KAAY) on the internalization of the values of cadets and cadet identity. Second, the researcher aims to derive improvement directions from the phenomenological perception and critical perspective of cadets through qualitative research. Method: In order to accomplish the research purposes, a common theme was derived by first examining the literature related to the cadet ceremonies and honor system of the military academies in Korea. In addition, focus group interviews were conducted with 12 cadets attending the KAAY to collect awareness of the internalization of their values and the impact of the honorary system on their identity formation. In addition, the meaning of the collected data was interpreted through content analysis, and the cadets' perception of the importance, influence, and improvement direction of ceremonial events and honor systems were analyzed. Results: As a result of literature review, the military academies are expected to operate similar ceremonies and honor systems, internalize honor as a core value, and form the identity of cadets who practice the honor procedures. The military academies provide various education programs to facilitate cadets to internalize the values, including honor pledge and loyalty ceremony, and those educations have a positive effect on the internalization of values and identity formation of cadets. However, there was an opinion that cadet uniforms and various ceremonies are currently maintaining the past traditions, so some improvements are needed. Conclusion: The ceremonies and honor systems have a positive effect on the internalization of the values of cadets and the development of the cadet identity. However, efforts to secure the uniqueness and tradition of each individual academy, as well as to share the value of human universality are also required.

      • Factors Affecting Korean Youth s Political Efficacy and Political Participation

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify factors that affect the political efficacy and participation of young Koreans. The sense of political efficacy is the confidence in an individual s political role and behavior, and is divided into internal and external efficacy as a predictor of political participation. Method: This study used the survey data of 3,530 people who participated in the 2019 Korean Youth Economic and Social Survey and the researcher analyzed the 25 variables related to political efficacy and political participation. Results: According to the results of the analysis, gender, educational background, income level, age, and occupation affected political efficacy, and the political efficacy significantly affected the political participation. Conclusion: The result suggests that we need to strengthen the political education and support for women and undereducated youth in order to increase their political efficacy.

        육군3사관학교 사관생도들의 영어 학습동기 및 영어 학습전략, 군사영어 성취간의 구조적 관계 분석

        The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of English learning motivation and English learning strategy on military cadets' achievement in military English. To best accomplish the research purpose, 250 military cadets of Korea Army Academy at Yeong-choen(KAAY) were randomly sampled using systematic random sampling method. Two questionnaires were administered to them: English Learning Motivation Survey(ELMS) and Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL). The achievement in military English was assessed by composite scores of mid term and final term exams. A Test of English for International Communication(TOEIC) had been administered to them as a part of graduation requirement. The collected data were analyzed in structural equation modeling analyses in order to answer two research hypotheses. The results of the analyses were like these: First, the KAAY cadets' learning motivation did not show statistically significant impact on their learning strategy. Second, the KAAY cadets' learning motivation had statistically significant impact on their achievement in military English. Third, the KAAY cadets' learning strategy had statistically significant impact on their achievement in military English.

        영어학습전략과 자기효능감이 대학생 토익성적 변화에 미치는 종단적 효과

        본 연구의 목적은 영어학습전략과 자기효능감이 대학생의 토익성적의 변화에 미치는 종단적 효과를 규명하는 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 경북에 소재한 K대학교 학생 474명을 대상으로 연구를 실시했다. 연구대상들은 영어교육이 시작되기 전 진단평가로서 토익시험에 응시했고, 영어교육이 시작된 이후 2년간 총 4회에 걸쳐 토익시험에 응시하여 성적을 종단자료로 구축했다. 영어학습전략과 자기효능감을 예측변인으로 투입하여 대학생들의 토익점수에 대해 잠재성장분석을 실시하여 예측변인들이 토익성적 변화에 미치는 영향을 분석했다. 그 결과 대학생들의 토익점수의 성장은 선형적인 것으로 나타났으며, 영어학습전략과 자기효능감은 통계적으로 유의미하게 대학생들이 토익점수 변화에 영향을 미쳤다. The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of self-efficacy and learning strategies on college students’ growth of the TOEIC scores. To accomplish the research purpose, 474 students of Kuniversity at Gyeongbuk Province were sampled. They took 4 TOEIC tests for 2 years and the growth of scores were predicted by self-efficacy and learning strategies. The results showed that the self-efficacy and learning strategy effectively predict the college students’ growth of TOEIC score. The results suggest that self-efficacy as an affective factor has a unique effect on college students’ growth of English proficiency. They also suggest that English instructors should pay attention to the learners’ self-efficacy and learning strategies.
