      • Influence of Cadet Ceremony on the Korean Military Cadets' IDENTITY

        Byongsam Jung 한국공공가치학회 2022 공공가치연구 Vol.3 No.1

Purpose: The purposes of this study are, first, to investigate the effect of ceremonial events and honor systems conducted by the Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon (KAAY) on the internalization of the values of cadets and cadet identity. Second, the researcher aims to derive improvement directions from the phenomenological perception and critical perspective of cadets through qualitative research. Method: In order to accomplish the research purposes, a common theme was derived by first examining the literature related to the cadet ceremonies and honor system of the military academies in Korea. In addition, focus group interviews were conducted with 12 cadets attending the KAAY to collect awareness of the internalization of their values and the impact of the honorary system on their identity formation. In addition, the meaning of the collected data was interpreted through content analysis, and the cadets' perception of the importance, influence, and improvement direction of ceremonial events and honor systems were analyzed. Results: As a result of literature review, the military academies are expected to operate similar ceremonies and honor systems, internalize honor as a core value, and form the identity of cadets who practice the honor procedures. The military academies provide various education programs to facilitate cadets to internalize the values, including honor pledge and loyalty ceremony, and those educations have a positive effect on the internalization of values and identity formation of cadets. However, there was an opinion that cadet uniforms and various ceremonies are currently maintaining the past traditions, so some improvements are needed. Conclusion: The ceremonies and honor systems have a positive effect on the internalization of the values of cadets and the development of the cadet identity. However, efforts to secure the uniqueness and tradition of each individual academy, as well as to share the value of human universality are also required.

      • Korean Public Values Revealed in Portal News Rankings

        Hyoungbin Park 한국공공가치학회 2021 공공가치연구 Vol.2 No.1

Purpose: In this study, I focused on the social and cultural characteristics of Korea and the moral characteristics of Koreans. Ultimately, I examined the characteristics of Korean moral culture. I tried to look at the internet news rankings to confirm the moral culture of Koreans. I tried to study the ranking of internet news by age to gauge what kind of consciousness and values Koreans have. Method: For this purpose, the titles up to the 5th in the gender ranking of DAUM portal news were analyzed by word cloud. The value-related terms that appeared in the articles viewed the portal ranking news with the most interest through big data word cloud analysis from July 20th to 24th, 2021. Results: First, I identified general conceptual definitions and characteristics of values, morals, and ethics. Second, I examined the value-related terms that appeared in the articles that viewed the portal ranking news with the most interest through big data word cloud analysis. Third, I inferred the characteristics of moral culture that appeared in the news of interest by age groups of Koreans used in this study. Fourth, I explored the meaning of these analysis results in terms of the moral education in Modern Korea. Conclusion: The interest in articles by age group is different. It can be inferred that women have relationship-oriented tendencies and men have collectivistic tendencies toward society and the state. However, there are several limitations in generalizing the gender differences analyzed based on this ranking news.

      • Moral Competence and Public Value

        Georg Lind 한국공공가치학회 2021 공공가치연구 Vol.1 No.1

Moral competence and public value are closely related. The core public value is democracy, which is actually a bundle of the four moral principles: freedom, justice, truth, and cooperation. Moral competence is the ability to apply these principles, that is, the ability to solve conflicts and problems inevitably resulting from applying these principles to real-life decision-making. As empirical and experimental evidence show, the moral principles of democracy are shared by most, if not all, people. However, most people do not have the opportunity to develop a minimum moral competence. Thus they cannot behave according to their moral principles without requiring (expensive) external control. Therefore, society must spend much money on their control. If society would foster the moral competence of all citizens, it could save much expenditure. Today, we can foster moral competence very effectively with methods like the Konstanz Method of Dilemma-Discussion (KMDD). The KMDD can be used with almost all age groups (3rd grade upwards). It is not only very effective but requires little time and money and no change of the curriculum. However, it is only effective if it is used by well trained and certified KMDD-Teachers. In my presentation I will explain in detail the new concept of moral competence, how it can be made visible through the experimentally designed Moral Competence Test (MCT), how relevant moral competence is for various kinds of behavior, and how it can be effectively fostered by the KMDD, which is used in various educational settings like grade school, secondary school, university, professional training, army academy, prison, and theater.

      • Influence of Natural and Creative Elements in the Intel-lectual Development of the Children and Youths and its Impact on Human Society

Abu Musa Mohammad Arif Billah 한국공공가치학회 2022 공공가치연구 Vol.3 No.1

Nature is a composite phenomenon of all the physically identifiable and visible objects. However, there is an invisible nature which exists in human mind. The reflection of bodily existent things or matters or images appear in the mind which finally work as principle sources of basic knowledge in human thought processes. The mental state here is to be considered as the sky in a natural atmosphere. Thus, the human mind acts not only as a reservoir of memory function rather it also works like a camera which takes the picture of seen or perceived objects and stimulates the person to think, to contemplate or to enjoy or feel sorrow - confounding the criteria of the natural objects or images. This is why the types of elements or the shape of nature is important to form a child’s mind. Creative elements such as games, TV serials, books or other study materials, have more impact than the natural one which might divert a child from natural mental growth to a synthetic or superficial manifestation. In most of the cases these creative elements are designed and motivated by the subjective notion of the politicians - government officials or state organs to try to model their citizens. The paper, providing with the definition of natural and phenomenal objects, analyses the issues related to nature, mind, self, perception, individuals, society, and more specifically relations between the acquisition of child perception and the effect of creative and natural elements using primary and secondary sources of materials. Finally it will make a proposition for the responsible authorities in order to enable them to understand how to help the children and the youths to get appropriate atmosphere of achieving perfect knowledge.
