Chemical Constituents of the Himalayan Yew , A Review

A large number of chemical constituents have been reported from the Himalayan yew [Taxus baccata (Linn) or T. wallichiana (Zucc)]. These constiuents are mainly taxoids and phenolics. Taxol, a lead anticancer agent, is the most important constituent. Other compounds have also been found to possess interesting biological properties. The literature concerning the chemistry and bioactivity of the constituents of the Himalayan yew has been briefly reviewed.

Chemical investigation on a sample of the needles of Himalayan Taxus baccata has resulted in the isolation of several taxoids including taxol (1) 10-deacetylbaccatin III (2) and 2-deacetoxytaxutine J (3) along with different lignans (6 and 7) and simple phenolics (8, 8, 10, 11 and 12). The occurrence of 4-(4`-hydroxyphenyl)-butane-2-one and 4-(4`-hydroxyphenyl)-traps-but 3-ene-2-one (8) in Taxus species is reported for the first time. The <sup>13</sup>C-NMR spectral data of two rearranged taxiod constituents, brevifoliol (4) and 13-decinnamoyltaxchinin B (5) are presented. The acid-catalyzed decomposition of taxol has been discussed. The synthesis of other two constituents, rhododendrol (10) and hibalactone (7) has been described.
One New and Two Rare Alkamides from two samples of the Fruits of Piper Longum

Two samples of the fruits of Piper longum have been chemically investigated. From one sample a new alkamide, pergumidiene and from other sample two rare alkamides, brachystamide B and piperderdine have been isolated. The known compounds, piperine, piperlonguminine, pellitorine, (+)-sesamine and 3-(3`, 4`, 5`-trimethoxyphenyl)-propionic acid were the common constituents of both the samples.

Pollution is a global phenomenon which has completely transformed the socio-economic scenario in urban areas all over the world we also care about it. Although the plant has a number of benefits, the lack of treatment of the fly ash generated from this plant has been detrimental to the productivity and quality of the main commercial crops of the surrounding area and is also responsible for some changes in the land use pattern. Studies were made to assess the impact of a thermal power plant located at Kolaghat on vegetation and water in surrounding areas. Pollutant concentration in the area gradually increased along a belt in the prevailing wind direction and a gradient of structural and functional changes in aquatic plants was observed. Natural vegetation in the area varied significantly at different sites and on the basis of plant responses can be classified as insensitive, intermediate and sensitive repetitively. The effect of the power plant emissions on water, soil and eco-physiological characteristics such as chlorophyll content, relative water content, ascorbic acid, it’s seemed to be a function of the pollutant gradient existing in the area. There was a relationship between plant responses and changes in the chemical factors of water, soil and plants due to pollution of Thermal Power Plant. According to pollution tolerance performance index such types of plants species play an importance role for green development in Kolaghat Thermal Power area.
