The financial servies sector is expected to be one in which the impact of the single European market will be particularly marked as fragmented national markets are opened to new competition. This paper considers how the changes engendered by '1990' in the financial services sector will affect different regions in the European Community. It surveys different types of regions and financial centres and suggests a typology for categorising them. The paper also presents a case study of Scotland where the sector is an increasingly significant part of the economy.
High precision integration for dynamic structural systems with holonomic constraints
Liu, Xiaojian,Begg, D.W.,Devane, M.A.,Zhong, Wanxie Techno-Press 1997 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.5 No.3
This paper presents a high precision integration method for the dynamic response analysis of structures with holonomic constraints. A detail recursive scheme suitable for algebraic and differential equations (ADEs) which incorporates generalized forces is established. The matrix exponential involved in the scheme is calculated precisely using $2^N$ algorithm. The Taylor expansions of the nonlinear term concerned with state variables of the structure and the generalized constraint forces of the ADEs are derived and consequently, their particular integrals are obtained. The accuracy and effectiveness of the present method is demonstrated by two numerical examples, a plane truss with circular slot at its tip point and a slewing flexible cantilever beam which is currently interesting in optimal control of robot manipulators.
No retreat from the heat: temperature-related risk of violent assault is increased by being inside

Studies finding an association between increasing temperature and violent crime have largely overlooked the potential effect modification of crime location. This study analysed 13 years of reported violent crime to investigate if there is a relationship between daily ambient temperature and crime type (domestic, non-domestic and sexual assault), and how this differs by whether the crime occurred inside or out. We found that predicted daily counts of domestic violence increased with temperature, and this association was greater for locations inside. Non-domestic assaults also increased with higher temperature, however when compared by location the incidents that occurred outside rose to around 30°C then plateaued while inside the risk continued to rise. Sexual assault peaked and then declined at around 30°C in inside and outside locations. The findings support the development of prevention and preparedness strategies by considering how the complex drivers behind the temperature–aggression association are modified by the location where it occurred.
Cardiac fibroblasts require focal adhesion kinase for normal proliferation and migration
Manso, Ana Maria,Kang, Seok-Min,Plotnikov, Sergey V.,Thievessen, Ingo,Oh, Jaewon,Beggs, Hilary E.,Ross, Robert S. American Physiological Society 2009 American journal of physiology, Heart and circulat Vol.296 No.3
<P> Migration and proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) play an important role in the myocardial remodeling process. While many factors have been identified that regulate CF growth and migration, less is known about the signaling mechanisms involved in these processes. Here, we utilized Cre-LoxP technology to obtain focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-deficient adult mouse CFs and studied how FAK functioned in modulating cell adhesion, proliferation, and migration of these cells. Treatment of FAKflox/flox CFs with Ad/Cre virus caused over 70% reduction of FAK protein levels within a cell population. FAK-deficient CFs showed no changes in focal adhesions, cell morphology, or protein expression levels of vinculin, talin, or paxillin; proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (Pyk2) expression and activity were increased. Knockdown of FAK protein in CFs increased PDGF-BB-induced proliferation, while it reduced PDGF-BB-induced migration. Adhesion to fibronectin was not altered. To distinguish between the function of FAK and Pyk2, FAK function was inhibited via adenoviral-mediated overexpression of the natural FAK inhibitor FAK-related nonkinase (FRNK). Ad/FRNK had no effect on Pyk2 expression, inhibited the PDGF-BB-induced migration, but did not change the PDGF-BB-induced proliferation. FAK deficiency had only modest effects on increasing PDGF-BB activation of p38 and JNK MAPKs, with no alteration in the ERK response vs. control cells. These results demonstrate that FAK is required for the PDGF-BB-induced migratory response of adult mouse CFs and suggest that FAK could play an essential role in the wound-healing response that occurs in numerous cardiac pathologies. </P>
