Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an exercise with and without neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the quadriceps femoris muscle, on strength, pain, and weight distribution in patients with knee instability post surgery. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twenty patients in the early stage of rehabilitation after knee surgery were recruited as subjects and were randomly divided into either experimental group (exercise combined with NMES) (n=10) or control group (n=10). Both groups received strength training of the lower limb for 20 min/day, 5 days/week for 4 weeks. The experimental group used NMES for unilateral quadriceps femoris training with incremental increases in the intensity of isometric contraction over 4 weeks. Outcome measurements were assessed using the digital manual muscle testing, 30-chair stand test (30CST), numeric pain rating scale (NPRS) and weight distribution using the foot analyzer before and after 4 weeks of training. Results: After the 4-week intervention, knee extensor strength increased significantly in the experimental group post intervention (p<0.05), and there was a significant improvement in the experimental group compared with the control group (p<0.05). The 30CST and NPRS scores improved significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.05), and there was a significant difference between the two groups (p<0.05). Weight distribution was significantly improved in the experimental group compared with the control group, (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in improvement between the two groups. Conclusions: This study showed that NMES combined with strengthening exercises of the lower limbs is effective in improving lower limb pain and strength in patients with instability after knee surgery.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the application of whole body vibration training (WBV) on the balance ability of patients with an American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) type C or D spinal cord injury. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twelve patients with spinal cord injury were enrolled in this study. The participants were randomized to an experimental group (n=6) or control group (n=6). The subjects in the experimental group received WBV exercise and the control group received the sham exercise without vibration. The vibrations were adjusted vertically to the patient at a 30 Hz frequency and 3 mm amplitude. The whole body vibration lasted for 16 minutes in total including 5-minutes warm-up and cool-down at the beginning and end of the program, respectively. The static sitting balance ability was assessed by measuring the postural sway while sitting on the force plate with the eyes opened or closed. Postural sway length was measured for 30 seconds with a self-selected comfortable position. Results: In the static balance test, the anterio-posterior, medio-lateral, and total postural sway length with the eyes open and closed was improved significantly before and after the intervention in the experimental group (p<0.05). The experimental group showed significantly more improvement than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that WBV training has a positive effect on improving static sitting balance and enhanced control of postural sway in patients with an ASIA-C or D type spinal cord injury.
Changes in the Socio-Spatial Structure in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area

The purpose of this research is to conduct a socio-spatial analysis on data from 1990, 2000, and 2010 using identical indices with the Tokyo Metropolitan area, spread over 4 prefectures and 1 city of Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Saitama-ken, Chiba-ken, Ibaraki-ken, as the analysis area and to use this to conduct a comparative time-based study. The analysis region was within a diameter of 60 km from the centre of Tokyo Station, and the Basic Grid Square was the unit of analysis and representation. The analysis results indicated that there were 3 types of changes including a) progress of decreasing birthrate and ageing population in almost all regions in the 60km area, b) changes arising in urban cores of polarization into new middle class and working class and accumulation of service jobs, c) changes arising in surrounding areas of accumulation of distribution facilities primarily in manufacturing.

MACHINE LEARNING APPLICATION TO PREDICT COMBUSTION PHASE OF A DIRECT INJECTION SPARK IGNITION ENGINE

Lean-diluted combustion can enhance thermal efficiency and reduce exhaust gas emissions from spark-ignited (SI) gasoline engines. However, excessive lean mixture with external dilution leads to combustion instability due to high cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV). The CCV should be controlled as low as possible to achieve stable combustion, high engine performance, and low emissions. Therefore, a stable combustion control function is required to predict the combustion phase with a low calculation load. A machine learning-based function is developed in this work to predict the 50 % mass fraction burn location (MFB50). Input parameters to the machine learning model consist of 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-cycle from a three-cylinder production-based gasoline engine operated under stoichiometric to the lean-burn mixture. The results show that the MFB50 prediction model achieves high accuracy when 2-cycle data are used relative to 1-cycle data, which implies that the previous cycle data affects the predicted MFB50 of the next cycle. As a result, the neural network model can predict the cyclic MFB50 error within ± 3 oCA CCV and ± 5 oCA CCV with 70 % and 90 % accuracy, respectively. However, an increasing number of cycle data worsens the prediction accuracy due to model over-learning.

We examined morphological differences between the sublingual and submandibular glands with special reference to their innervation. The sublingual gland contained abundant periodic acid Schiff-positive mucous acini: some lobules were composed of purely mucous acini, while others were purely serous or mixed. However, in the submandibular gland, the area of mucous acini was very limited. Notably, in the sublingual gland, immunohistochemistry for neuron-specific enolase demonstrated that the serous acini carried a higher density of nerve elements than the mucous acini. However, no such difference was evident in the submandibular gland, possibly due to the small areas of the mucous acini. In both types of gland, neuronal nitric oxide synthase-positive parasympathetic nerves as well as tyrosine hydroxylase-positive sympathetic nerves were observed in the interlobular tissue, but we were unable to trace these thin fibers to the acini. Myoepithelial cells expressed smooth muscle actin, but were negative for S100B protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein and neuron-specific enolase. However, antibody against S100A stained some of the myoepithelial cells and ductal cells in the sublingual gland. Cells positive for peripheral myelin protein 22 were seen in some of the ductal cells in the submandibular gland, but not in the sublingual gland. Therefore, with regard to the neurogenic features of the gland cells, S100B reactivity might disappear first in postnatal life, whereas S100A reactivity is likely to remain as aging progresses. The sublingual gland in elderly individuals seems to provide a good model for comparison of the nerve supply between mucous and serous acini.

We investigate factors that influence the extent to which characteristics of overseas R&D laboratories source knowledge from host locations. Drawing on both the capabilities perspective and the embeddedness perspective, we developed a conceptual model and then examined it empirically focusing on overseas R&D labs of Japanese multinationals. Statistical findings from negative binomial regressions show that both technological capabilities of the lab and external embeddedness in the local scientific and engineering communities matter.
