There is an urgent need to investigate more eco-friendly fibres due to the high cost of traditional cellulosic fibres. Eco-friendlyMW fibre was extracted and characterised as a potential replacement for risky artificial fibre. Physicochemical, XRD, FTIR,SEM, thermal analysis, and Weibull distribution methods were used to study MW fibre as a biocomposite reinforcement. The density, tensile strength, Young's modulus, strain at failure, and micro-fibril angle of MW fibre with an average diameterof 102.278 μm were found to be 1372–1510 kg/m3, 46.554 MPa, 2.442 GPa, 8–9%, and 22 ± 1°, respectively. The predictedYoung's modulus and strength of the fibre showed a good match with the experimental data in the Weibull distributionanalysis. In addition, FTIR verified the presence of cellulose (O = H), hemicellulose (C = O), lignin (C = C), and wax (CC)in the fibre. XRD study reveals CI and CS of 58.07% and 2.86 nm, respectively. The activation energy of 63.156 kJ/mol andthermal stability up to 300 °C were noted during TGA, DTGA, and DSC studies. The fiber's high cellulose content (70 wt%)and roughness (23.664 μ m) contributed to its specific strength and adherence to the polymer matrix. The importance of thepresent study suggests potential applications of this fiber in the fields of papermaking, packaging, lignocellulose composites, and cellulose nanocomposite manufacturing.

An active steering bogie is designed to for yaw control of the wheel-sets to align the wheels with the track direction during curve negotiation. Existing control laws for active steering are developed by assuming new wheels and rails, and known vehicle and track layout, but do not include the vehicle speed as an input variable. As wheels wear and vehicle speed varies, such static control law may not be optimal. In this paper, the time-varying cant surplus/deficiency information are adapted into a modified active steering control law. Multi-body simulation results show reduced wheel wear, and increase in passenger comfort, operating speed and wheel life due to the proposed adaptive steering control law.

An integrated vehicle-biodynamic model is developed in this article by using multi-domain energy domain bond graph model simulation and multi-body simulation software ADAMS VI-Rail. These models are specifically used to evaluate passenger ride comfort in a railway vehicle where vertical and lateral excitations at the wheels arise out of the track irregularities. In the bond graph model, the carbody of the railway vehicle is treated as an Euler-Bernoulli beam and its first five modes are included in the model. Thereafter, a detailed model of the railway vehicle is created in ADAMS VI-Rail. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 2631 specification is used to determine the passenger comfort for different travel durations and track irregularities.

Objective: Terminalia arjuna plant, specially its leaves, bark, and roots, are widely used in traditional herbal medicine due to presence of bioactive components and being a rich source of natural antioxidants. But its fruit has not been used for any such purposes despite its potential to retard oxidation. Hence, the antioxidant potential of Arjuna fruit extract (AFE) in retarding lipid and protein oxidation of raw ground pork was evaluated during refrigerated storage for 9 days. Methods: The AFEs were prepared using different solvents viz. ethanol (EH), water, ethanol: water (60:40) and methanol:hot water (60:40). The AFEs were analysed for total phenolic content (TPC), 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and reducing power. Water extract (WE) and ethanol-water extract (EH-WE) were selected and incorporated at 1.0% into freshly minced pork meat and compared with a synthetic antioxidant, in retarding lipid and protein oxidation during storage. Results: The TPC in AFEs using different solvents ranged from 11.04 to 16.53 mg gallic acid equivalents/g and extracts exhibited appreciable scavenging activity ranging from 50.02% to 58.62%. Arjuna extracts significantly (p<0.05) improved the colour score of meat samples by reducing the formation of metmyoglobin during storage. Both the AFEs (WE and EH-WE) significantly (p<0.05) lowered the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances value, peroxide formation and formation of protein carbonyls in raw pork than control sample during storage. Upon sensory evaluation of all samples, it was found that AFE treatment could prolong the storage period of meat samples, without influencing the colour and odour score, up to 6 days. Conclusion: AFEs used at 1% improved the oxidative stability, colour and odour score and prolonged the refrigerated shelf life of ground pork up 6 days. Therefore, AFE could be explored as an alternative natural antioxidant in retarding lipid and protein oxidation in meat products.
