Systematic Development of Tomato BioResources in Japan

Recently, with the progress of genome sequencing, materials and information for research on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) have been systematically organized. Tomato genomics tools including mutant collections, genome sequence information, full-length cDNA and metabolomic datasets have become available to the research community. In Japan, the National BioResource Project Tomato (NBRP Tomato) was launched in 2007, with aims to collect, propagate, maintain and distribute tomato bioresources to promote functional genomics studies in tomato. To this end, the dwarf variety Micro-Tom was chosen as a core genetic background, due to its many advantages as a model organism. In this project, a total of 12,000 mutagenized lines, consisting of 6000 EMS-mutagenized and 6000 gamma-ray irradiated M2 seeds, were produced, and the M3 offspring seeds derived from 2236 EMS-mutagenized M2 lines and 2700 gamma-ray irradiated M2 lines have been produced. Micro-Tom mutagenized lines in the M3 generation and monogenic Micro-Tom mutants are provided from NBRP tomato. Moreover, tomato cultivated varieties and its wild relatives, both of these are widely used for experimental study, are available. In addition to these bioresources, NBRP Tomato also provides 13,227 clones of full-length cDNA which represent individual transcripts non-redundantly. In this paper, we report the current status of NBRP Tomato and its future prospects.
Is There an Optimal Extent of Liver Resection in Patients with Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma?

Aim: No evidence of anatomical hepatectomy or extended hepatectomy for patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) shows good surgical outcomes. We compared the surgical outcomes of ICC with those of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: From 1990 to 2014, 1784 patients with HCC and 118 patients with mass-forming type ICC underwent hepatectomy at Tokyo Women’s Medical University. 60 ICC and 1350 HCC patients were selected according to the criterion of a single nodular type tumor less than 5 cm in diameter. Surgical procedures, recurrent sites, recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were compared between HCC and ICC patients. Results: With regard to the background, the ratio of males and the rate of liver cirrhosis were significantly higher in HCC patients. With regard to the tumor and surgical factors, the tumor size was smaller, and the rates of vascular invasion, lymph node metastasis and major hepatectomy were significantly lower in HCC patients. RFS and OS were 35%, 32% and 59%, 69% in ICC and HCC, respectively. There were no significant differences in RFS and OS between ICC and HCC. However, the early recurrence rate and the rate of distant metastasis were higher in ICC patients. Conclusion: The optimal extent of liver resection could not be found in our data. To improve the long-term survival, we need effective systemic adjuvant therapy after hepatectomy for ICC.
Redundant Control of a Planar Snake Robot with Prismatic Joints

This paper presents a control method of a planar snake robot with prismatic joints. The kinematic model is derived considering velocity constraints caused by passive wheels. The proposed control method based on the model allows the robot to track a target trajectory by appropriately changing its link length using prismatic joints. The degrees of freedom of prismatic joints are represented as kinematic redundancy in the model and are used inrealizing subtasks such as singularity avoidance and obstacle avoidance. In addition, the link length is below its limit when introducing a sigmoid function into the kinematic model. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and show a novel motion that avoids singular configurations through changes in link lengths.
