Multiplexed Input to Protect Against Casual Observers

It has become common to authenticate to private content on smartphones or tablets in the presence of trusted individuals such as friends and coworkers - casual, inadvertent and non-malicious observers to whom users do not want to needlessly expose their passwords. Existing shoulder-surfing resistant authentication schemes provide security but are overly burdensome for users in these relaxed scenarios. This paper explores the idea of using heterogeneous multiplexed input codes as a simple technique for creating good-enough solutions to protect against casual observation in non-malicious and relatively secure settings - trading off security for usability.
Enhancing Spatial Input on the Body with a Smart-Ring

Smart, interactive fabrics are enabling a new generation of wearables that can sense touch input with high fidelity. However, while sensing systems are improving, we argue that human challenges remain: touch input on clothes will be hard due to a lack distinctive physical cues to guide users and the fact that many wearable scenarios involve eyes-free input. We propose to address these issues by combining touch selections on the body with complementary input on a ring wearable. We validate this idea with an empirical study that contrasts targeting performance with input on the body against that with a combination of input on ring and body. The results show that times remain static, while error rates and workload are significantly improved.
Using Light in for PIN Entry Authentications

Performing sensitive authentications, such as ATM PIN entry, in public spaces is a commonplace activity that is inherently susceptible to security attacks based on observation in person or via cameras. This paper addresses this problem with a system which allows users to enter PINs on their mobile devices and then transmit them securely for authentication using modulated patterns of light shown on the screen, sensed by a receiver unit and initiated by a physical action (placing the device facedown on the receiver). The advantages include the use of standard mobile devices and low cost sensing hardware. Furthermore, no pre-pairing is required as physical proximity guarantees security.

However, the dimension of the wearable battery’s location was not reviewed thoroughly, despite its importance in user experience. Therefore, we propose a taxonomy of the location of the batteries of wearable devices through a literature review.
