Asymmetric recognition of chiral alcohol by fluorenone derivatives with chiral substituents through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction in the singlet excited state was attempted. 1-((1S, 2R, 5S)-(+)-Menthyloxycarbonyl)aminofluoren-9-one (1-MAF) and 1-((1S, 2R, 5S)-(+)-menthyloxycarbonyl)oxyfluoren-9-one (1-MOF) were synthesized and their photophysical behaviors were characterized by the measurement of absorption and fluorescence spectra, as well as the quantum yield and the lifetime of fluorescence. The excited singlet states of 1-MAF and 1-MOF were revealed to have characteristics similar to those of fluorenone, though the intramolecular CT nature was fairly suppressed as compared with 3- and 4-substituted aminofluorenones. Fluorescences of 1-MAF and 1-MOF in acetonitrile were quenched by the addition of alcohols. Differences in fluorescence quenching efficiency were hardly observe for rather small chiral alcohols such as (R)-(-)- or (S)-(+)-2-butanol, while bulky alcohols such as menthol and isopinocampheol showed chiral recognition effects in their fluorescence quenching of 1-MAF in either acetonitrile or butyronitrile.

Tissue stem cells are used for the regenerative medicine. In previous study we observed hard tissue formation of human dental pulp-derived cells using alginate scaffold. In this study, we explore the ability to differentiate of the 13th passage cells with glycerol 2-phosphate disodium salt hydrate (${\beta}-GP$) which accelerate calcification. Reverse transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), transplants using alginate scaffold and histological examination were performed. We observed the expression of DSPP mRNA on day 10 cultured cells with ${\beta}-GP$. In conclusion, the 13th passage cells still have an ability to differentiate into odontoblast-like cells and alginate supports the differentiation of cultured cells in the transplants.
Bendable Differential Power Processing Converter for Curved Photovoltaic Panels

Electrical characteristic mismatches of seriesconnected photovoltaic (PV) substrings is well known for triggering various negative influences, such as a significant reduction in power generation and occurrence of multiple maximum power points (MPPs). Recently, curved PV panels have been developed. Uneven solar irradiance due to the curved surface results in mismatched substring characteristics. Although various kinds of differential power processing (DPP) converters have been proposed to address the mismatch issues, the conventional converters equipping with bulky magnetic components, such as inductors and transformers, are difficult to be employed for curved PV panels. This paper proposes an LLC resonant voltage multiplier (VM)-based bendable DPP converter using a flexible transformer. The proposed DPP converter can flexibly be applied to curved surfaces thanks to the flexible transformer and lack of bulky magnetic components. Experiments under mismatched irradiance conditions were performed, and the results demonstrated the proposed DPP converter could preclude the mismatch issues.
Excellence and authenticity: 'Living National (Human) Treasures' in Japan and Korea

This article first reviews the Japanese system for theprotection of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH),notably how the system of ‘Living National Treasures’and the protection of ‘Folk Cultural Properties’ have beenimplemented in the country. It then goes on to describethe Korean system which seems similar but in fact isdifferent in its objectives and approaches. The paper thenrefers to UNESCO’s efforts to promote a ‘Living HumanTreasures’ system worldwide. Finally, it questionswhether the official recognition of selected expressionsof the intangible cultural heritage is a universallysuitable measure to ensure the global safeguarding ofICH and notably of folk cultural expressions.
제국의 지도와 경성의 삶 - 이상 『12월 12일』론 -

본고는 작가론의 방법으로 흔히 해석되는 이상의 『12월 12일』(1930)에 대해 소설 중에 재현된 제국 규모의 지리적 영역에 주목하면서 접근하고자 한 글이다. 소설에 재현된 제국에서의 유민 경험은 조선인에게 작용하는 식민지근대의 양상을 제시하는 동시에 대일본제국 내에서의 이동 가능성의 한계를 구획 짓는 것이다. 주인공 `그`의 의지나 자기결정을 압도하는 사건의 연속이 “운명”으로 파악되면서 `그`의 방황을 추동한다. 이는 조선총독부의 지배로 인한 제국 규모의 조선인 이산 현상과 결부되는 동시에 지극히 환상적인 서사적 구축물이기도 하다. 경성에 돌아온 후의 `그`의 삶은 훼손된 `그`의 신체와 남의 재산을 “횡재”했다는 `그`의 불안이 상징하듯이 위태로운 것이다. 현실의 경성을 위협했던 화재와 연결된 소설 중의 불 이미지는 등장인물 간의 인간관계와 생활을 파괴하고 최종적인 파멸로 `그`를 이끌어간다. `그`의 철도 자살은 제국의 네트워크에 연결되면서도 경성의 폐색에 저주받은 삶에 대한 인식을 제시한다. 『12월 12일』이라는 소설은 살아갈 수 없는 삶을 살아야 한다는 모순적인 감각에 대해, 대일본제국의 네트워크에 편입된 경성이라는 장소의 관한 자각과 함께 사유한 결과물이라고 할 수 있다. This paper attempts to analyze Yi Sang`s first novel, December 12th (1930), which has often been read and referred to in relation to the author`s biography. This paper reinterprets the novel through analysis of the representation of the Japanese Empire`s geography and the protagonist`s diasporic situation. The novel displays aspects of colonial modernity and mobility within the Imperial boundaries by representing the Korean protagonist`s migration, driven by a “destiny” that always transcends his self-determination. While this can be connected to the actual migration of Koreans during the colonial period, brought about by the domination of the Government-General of Korea, it can also be regarded as a kind of fantastic narrative. On returning to Keijo (Seoul), the protagonist`s life in the city is depicted as precarious, symbolized by his damaged body and anxiety concerning the inheritance in Tokyo. Fire, which was actually one of the most serious public concerns of the Keijo residents at the time, and the railway suicide of the protagonist lead to the catastrophic end of the novel. December 12th shows a perception concerning the unlivable life in the colonial city that one has to live. Keijo, integrated into the Imperial network of Japan, is represented as an arena of such contradiction.
Running exercise and food restriction affect bone chemical properties in young female rats

[Purpose] To investigate the effects of a combination of running and food restriction on the chemical properties of the bone in young female rats using Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, we investigated whether the chemical property parameters correlated with the bone-breaking strength. [Methods] Female Sprague–Dawley rats (7 weeks old) were randomly divided into four groups: sedentary and ad libitum feeding (SED, n = 8), voluntary running exercise and ad libitum feeding (EX, n = 8), sedentary and 30% food-restricted (SED-FR, n = 8), and voluntary running exercise and 30% food-restricted (EX- FR, n = 8). The experiment was conducted for a period of 12 weeks. Four parameters measured by Raman spectroscopy were used to evaluate the bone chemical quality. [Results] Exercise and restriction had significant interactions on the mineral to matrix ratio. The mineral-to-matrix ratio in the SED-FR group was significantly higher than that in the SED group and significantly lower in the EX-FR group than that in the SED-FR group. Running exercise had significant effects on increasing the crystallinity and carbonate-to-phosphate ratio. In the ad libitum intake condition, there were significant positive correlations between breaking energy and crystallinity (r = 0.593) and between breaking energy and carbonate-to-phosphate ratio (r = 0.854). [Conclusion] Our findings show that running exercise and food restriction, alone or in combination, affect the chemical properties of bone. Furthermore, under ad libitum intake conditions, positive correlations were found between the breaking energy and crystallinity, or carbonate-to-phosphate ratio.
