Disruptions of Political Participation in the Philippines
Samad, Paridah Abd. the Center for International Studies, Inha Univers 1990 Pacific Focus Vol.5 No.2
Marcos'authoritarian rule limited the fteedom of politicaI par- ticipation of the Filipino people by imposing restrictions on political parties and organizations which intended to facilitate popular politi- cal participation in opposing the governnlent. VVith the help of the military Marcos was not only able to suppress the political activities of those forces but aIso able to mobiIize citizens to support the regime.

The present investigates were executed to decide the effects of citrus or banana peels extract on the growth and metabolic activities of two wheat cultivars Sakha 94 and Giza 168 grown under different drought stress conditions. Furthermore, to detect the drought tolerance of wheat cultivars and the roles of citrus or banana peels in alleviating drought stress, a pot experiment was carried out using drought stress levels and extracts of citrus 3% or banana peels 3%. The growth parameters of the two tested cultivars decreased with increasing drought stress levels especially at higher levels. This diminishing growth in Sakha 94 was related to the decline in soluble sugars and potassium in roots and spikes, soluble proteins in the three organs, and proline in shoots and spikes. In Giza 168, this reduction was coincided at 30% drought stress levels with the depletion in the soluble protein in shoots and spikes, potassium and proline in spikes. Exogenous application of citrus or banana extracts alleviates the inhibitory effects of drought stress in growth parameters and chemical constituents in two wheat cultivars. Potassium increased significantly as increasing drought stress levels with citrus and banana treatments in Sakha 94, while it was declined in Giza 168. Exogenous application of Citrus or Banana mostly increased anthocyanin, ascorbic acids in the two wheat cultivars while total phenolic compounds and flavonoids did not change.

The aim of this study is to classify critical security issues in cloud banking organizations, according to the cloud service models (CSM), and the cloud deployment models (CDM). We classified and ranked the critical cloud security issues for banking organizations based on secondary and primary data. In this regard the cloud Delphi study is modified into three phases like identifying, analysis, and evaluating security issues. In this study, the samples of 40 panelists were selected from inside and outside Malaysian banking organizations based on their experienced in the banking environment to set the insight of the cloud issues. The study starts with a list of cloud security issues based on secondary data and interview. In addition, we illustrated the level of risk for all the cloud security issues in banking organizations as small, medium, and large risk. We also indicated that the highest risk of “Trusted cloud” in 3rd party (providers) and policies security issues and the highest risk of “Availability and Mobility” in application and program (software) security, etc. The study has been conducted on groups of cloud IT managers and cloud banking developers. As a future work, we will control and mitigate the critical security issues by using artificial intelligence techniques (ANN). A successful classification of critical cloud security issues will greatly improve the probability of cloud banking success rate.

Energy conservation is a vital issue in wireless sensor networks. Recently, employing mobile sinks for data gathering become a pervasive trend to deal with this problem. The sink can follow stochastic or pre-defined paths; however the controlled mobility pattern nowadays is taken more into consideration. In this method, the sink moves across the network autonomously and changes its position based on the energy factors. Although the sink mobility would reduce nodes` energy consumption and enhance the network lifetime, the overhead caused by topological changes could waste unnecessary power through the sensor field. In this paper, we proposed EEDARS, an energy-efficient dual-sink algorithm with role switching mechanism which utilizes both static and mobile sinks. The static sink is engaged to avoid any periodic flooding for sink localization, while the mobile sink adaptively moves towards the event region for data collection. Furthermore, a role switching mechanism is applied to the protocol in order to send the nearest sink to the recent event area, hence shorten the path. This algorithm could be employed in event-driven and multi-hop scenarios. Analytical model and extensive simulation results for EEDARS demonstrate a significant improvement on the network metrics especially the lifetime, the load and the end-to-end delay.

Particle filter is a Monte Carlo simulation method that designed to approximate nonlinear problem and tracks the state of the dynamic system. Over the past decade, particle filters have been successfully applied in wide variety of applications. By using geographical information system (GIS) database, particle filter applications involve tracking of underwater (UW) vessels, surface ships, cars and aircraft. Particle filter also contributed in robotics community, where the algorithm can solve the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problem. Since multiple targets can be tracked from a video stream using particle filter, visual tracking is another interesting application of particle filter. However, particle filter is rarely used in the flood water level prediction and tracking applications. This paper proposes flood water level prediction and tracking using Sampling Importance Resampling (SIR) particle filter which is one of particle filter variations. As the effectiveness of the particle filter depends on the parameters stated in the algorithm, the parameters are varied to analyze the performance result. The parameters are number of particles and number of time step. From the simulation, the performance result of particle filter is quite impressive to look into.

Knowledge about academic writing is important to be promoted among the community in Institutes of Teacher Education Malaysia (ITEMs) as the teacher trainees will need to teach these academic writing skills to their students in the future. Additionally, the amalgamation of digital technologies and instructional practice is known to be able to ignite the change in the teacher trainees’ learning of academic writing. As such, this study was conducted by adopting a single group quasi-experimental research design to investigate the effects of digital writing software as a tool for process approach to writing on teacher trainees’ academic writing performance. The study was done on 10 teacher trainees at one ITEM using pre- and post-tests, observation, and reflective journal. Findings indicate that the use of digital writing software as a tool for process approach to writing does improve the teacher trainees’ academic writing performance. The eclectic approach proposes an effective way of enhancing the writing process and increasing the teacher trainees’ motivation to write digital conceptual papers. The use of digital writing software as a tool for process approach to writing can be carried out over an extended duration to develop better comprehension and practice of academic writing.

Background: Skeletal muscle injuries are frequent clinical challenges due to associated fibrosis and disability. Regenerative medicine is an emerging promising strategy for such cases. The aim of this study was to compare between the effects of bone marrow-mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) versus adipose tissue stromal cells (ADSCs) on regeneration and re-innervation of skeletal muscle laceration injury in Wistar rats at different time intervals. Methods: Six young male rats were used as a source of allogenic MSCs. Eighty-four adult female rats were divided into: Group I (control), Group II (Untreated Laceration): right gluteal muscle was lacerated and left for spontaneous healing, Group III (BM-MSCs): right gluteal muscle was lacerated with concomitant local intramuscular injection of 1 × 106 BM-MSCs in the lacerated muscle, Group IV (ADSCs): right gluteal muscle was lacerated with concomitant local intramuscular injection of 1 × 106 ADSCs in lacerated muscle. Rats were sacrificed after one, two and eight weeks. Muscles were processed to prepare sections stained with H&E, Mallory’s trichrome and immune-histochemical staining (neurofilament light chain). Results: A significant increase in collagen fibers and failure of re-innervation were noticed in untreated laceration group. BM-MSCs-treated groups showed regeneration of muscle fibers but with increased collagen fibers. Meanwhile, ADSCs showed better regenerative effects evidenced by significant increase in the number of myotubes and significant decrease in collagen deposition. Re-innervation was noticed in MSCs-injected muscles after 8 weeks of laceration. Conclusion: Both BM-MSCs and ADSCs improved regeneration of skeletal muscle laceration injury at short- and long-term durations. However, fibrosis was less in ADSCs-treated rats. Effective re-innervation of injured muscles occurred only at the long-term duration.
