        Ethrel 750ppm was sprayed on the leaves of onion at one week interval from just after flower bud differentiation to just after bolting to reduce the flower stalk height. Six concentration levels of ethrel (0, 750, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, and 5,000ppm) were sprayed on the leaves on April 11. In ethrel 750ppm, bolting percentage was the least in April 18 application at May 3 count followed by April 25 application. Reduction of flower stalk height was maximum at April 18 application in 750ppm followed by April 25, March 24, April 11, May 2, April 4, May 9, March 28 in order. Germination speed and germination percentage were the least in ethrel 750ppm applied on April 18 as compared to control. Bolting was delayed, height of flower stalks was reduced, and germination speed and percentage were decreased with increased concentration of ethrel in the range of over 1,000ppm. Foliar application of ethrel 750ppm or lower just after bolting would be beneficial in reduction of flower stalk height in practice.

        Changes in the chemical compositions of the Korean garlic cloves were investigated about the several local varieties at different storage period. The obtained results are as follows; Protein content was reduced in the storage leaf as prolonged storage period, while tends to increase in the foliage leaf. Protein contents were produced much more in the northern strains than the southern strains as prolonged storage period. Sugar contents of the storage leaf were increased as prolonged storage period, and the some trends was found in the foliage leaf. Sugar content showed markedly increase in the foliage leaf as compared with the storage leaf.

        This experiment was conducted to determine the characteristics of clove development of various garlic strains introduced from Spain and Argentina which the cloves differentiate in the axils of only two neighbouring leaf-sheaths, and Formosa, Mexico and Argentina which the cloves differentiate in the axils of several leaf-sheaths. The results obtained can be summerized as follows. Numerous primary cloves were formed from the larger bulb on the garlic cloves differentiate in the axils of only two neighbouring leaf sheaths. Spain garlic strain produced more cloves from inner-layer than outer layer cloves while outer-layer cloves from smaller bulb and inner-layer cloves from large bulb of Argentina garlic strain produced more cloves. Secondary growth was low from both Spain and Argentina garlic strains. In the frequency of clove number per clove weight, middle weight showed increasing tendency in clove number. Large cloves formed heavier bulb. Middle and smaller bulbs of Spain garlic strain showed heavier cloves from inner-layer than that of outer-layer cloves. Large bulb of Spain garlic strain and Argentina garlic strain were heavier from outer-layers clove than of inner-layer cloves. In garlic clove formed in the axils of several leaf sheaths cloves formation of Formosa strain was succeeding 6 leaf axils, 6∼8 leaf axils from Mexico strain and 5 leaf axils from Argentina strain. Number of cloves formed from one leaf axil and weight of cloves was more numerous on second leaf axil from out side of the bulb and decreased from inner side of the bulb. In the number of cloves formed per leaf axils, Formosa strain formed 1∼9 cloves, 1∼10 cloves from Mexico strain and 1∼6 cloves from Argentina strain. Heavier bulb produced the most numerous cloves than smaller bulb from one leaf axil.

      • 도마도 裂果防止 效果에 關한 硏究

        The present studies were carried out to ascertain the influence of applying various chemical substances on tomato variety "Daehung-Boxsu" and "Roma" in order to control the fruit cracking. Daehung-Boxsu was used in the test for wrapping to prevent the cracking. The results presented below also include observations made for the test done with wrapping and without it, and microscopic observation on cuticular layers of the fruit skin. 1). The total length of cracking per fruit in the Daehung-Boxsu, was considerably decreased with treatment of N^6-benzyladenine (BA) 20 ppm and Atonik, EDTA 10 ppm, and Urea 0.2% respectively, while Roma also showed the similar effect to BA 20 ppm with IAA more than control plot. Daehung-Boxsu seems to show a decrease in the length of cracking when treated with BA 20 ppm plus IAA, and BA 50 ppm more than control plot. 2). Extent of the fruit cracking in the Daehung-Boxsu seems to be decreased with BA20 ppm, BA20 ppm plus IAA, BA 20 ppm plus Atonik, BA 50 ppm, EDTA 10 ppm and urea 0.2% plots more than control plot. The cracking in Roma seems to be decreased with BA 2 ppm, BA 20 ppm, BA 20 ppm plus IAA, BA 100 ppm, and EDTA 10 ppm plots more than control plot. 3). The rate of fruit cracking, Daehung-Boxsu seems to be decreased with BA 20 ppm, BA 20 ppm plus IAA plots more than control plot. Roma seems to be decreased with BA 20 ppm, BA 20 ppm plus IAA plots more than control plot. 4). In the wrapping plot, the rate of the fruit cracking and the total length of cracking per fruit were markedly decreased, and also extent of fruit cracking, number of the cracking per fruit were decreased more than control plot. 5). The cuticle development of the fruit-skin structure in Daehung-Boxsu became gradualy thicker as the fruit grew. The epidermal cell were surrounded by cuticle which is intruded into the inner tissues. The degree was found to be more exaggerated in the control fruit than the wrapped ones.

        Garlic bulbs of northern strain, cv. Youngdoug-Jaerae, Gumreung-Jaerae and Youngchon-Jaerae were collected from markets in 1978, grouped by bulb size, and peeled into cloves to study the characteristics of bulbing and the size distribution of cloves. 1. Percentages of the weights of bundling straw, roots, stems and leaves, bulbs, peeled cloves and healthy cloves to the initial weight of a Jub (a bundle of 100 bulbs) were 1.4, 2.9, 4.9, 90.8, 86.3, and 82.0%, respectively in Youngdoug Jaerae and 1.1, 2.8, 6.3, 89.0, 85.0, and 76.4%, respectively in Gumreung Jaerae. The larger the bulbs, the higher the ratio in weight of the peeled cloves to the bulbs. The smaller the bulbs, the higher the ratio of the weights of stems and leaves, and bundling straw to the initial weight of a Jub of garlic. 2. The larger the bulbs, the more the number of primary cloves and the total number of cloves per bulb in all three cultivars. The primary cloves in the outer layer of the bulbs were more in number and heavier in weight than those in the inner layer. 3. In all three cultivars, the range of the clove size was narrow in small bulbs but wide in large bulbs. The larger the bulbs, the more the large cloves per bulb. Frequency distribution of cloves in size showed a peak on the medium class, irrespective of bulb size. 4. The larger the bulbs, the more the secondary bulb formation. The secondary bulb formation was found more in the outer layer than in the inner layer of a bulb.
