We propsoed a multiplexed optical correlation filter method for an optical parallel addition based on symbolic substitution. In the proposed mthod, we used redundant binary number which was easy to minimize the number of the symbolic substitution rules. We chose MACE filter which had very low sidelobes and good correlation peak compared with SDF filter as the optical correlation recognition filter and encoded input numbers properly to increase the discrimination capability. In order to minimize the number of symbolic substitution rules, sixteen input patterns were divided into six groups of the same addition results and six filters for recognizing the input patterns were used. these filters were multiplexed in two MMACE filter planes and the corresponding substitution method was proposed. Through the computer simulation, we confirmed the proposed method was suitable to implement the optical parallel adder.

Edge is one of the primitive features of an picture and are widely used in image processing. New edge extraction methods using various entropy operators are presented and reduce drawbacks which are edge smothing and difficulty of edge extraction in bright region of a picture. In particular, 2×2 entropy operator has a feaure of schetching in edges. The comparision of performances with proposed operators to different operators shows significant improvements and proves good practically.

A positive-negative-negative binary(PNB) number representation suitable for digital-optical computers is proposed. By means of this representation it is possible to build an arithmetic with carry-free parallel algebraic sums carried out in constant time. This positive-negative binary number system and permits the construction of inherently parallel arithmetic units that are used in various optical technologies. Zero detections of this number system to compare two numbers and several examples of computation are presented.

The redundant binary(RB) number system offers parallel addition and subtraction of any two numbers, with carry propagation constrained only between two adjacent pair of digits the same weight nr. Based on RB addition, parallel algorithms for subtraction and multiplication are developed in this paper. The optical implementations of these RB arithmetic algorithms are developed on the basis of symbolic substitution(SS). New SS rules composed of five groups whose addition results are the same are proposed. Some properties of this number representation and several examples of computation are presented.

This paper deals with the reconstruction of signals from quadrature mirror filter(QMF) banks. A matrix formulation on the problem is presented which facilitates the design of the synthesis QMF banks. Well-known results for two-band QMF bank are rederived and parallel equivalents of multiband filter bank structure are discussed in view of the presented theory.

A new filter with limited rotation invariance for real target functions is proposed. This filter is Fourier transform of the real part of the sum of the multiple circular harmonic component of a target. An expression for the peak correlation intensity at the origin of the correlation plane is derived. A computer experiment confirms the theoretical predictions. The computer simulation shows the ability of the filter to recognize a target within an angular range of 10∼20。 in the dresence of other patterns.

In this paper the intent recognition system which recognizes the human's head motion as a simple non-linguistic intent representation is presented. The system recognizes four basic intent representations, such as strong/weak affirmation and strong/weak negation by image processing of nodding or shaking motion of human's head. The vision system for tracking the head motion is composed of CCD camera image processing board and personal computer The modified template matching method which replaces the reference image with the searched target image in the previous step is used for the robust tracking of the head motion. For the improvement of the processing speed, the searching is performed in the reduced regions based on the pyramid structure. By inspecting the variance of the head motion trajectories, we can recognizes the two basic intent representations - affirmation and negation. Also, by focusing the speed of the head motion, we can see the strength of the intent representation.

The method of optical implementation is proposed for optical 2-D perfect shuffles using an optical correlator. Using the optical correlator, only one magnified and masked input plane is generated instead of four copies of the input plane. A correlation filter is designed to shift and superimpose four copies properly. One correlation filter, instead of using four filters, can reduce the size of the optical system. The desired 2-D shuffle output is obtained in the center region of the correlation output plane. The results of the computer simulations show the proposed correlation system is suitable for the optical 2-D perfect shuffle.

A method for the exact calculation of the impulse response of all-plane filters in a finite region is presented. This method is based partitioning the all-plane into four quarter-planes. By Simple transformation of variable w for the first quarter-plane, and the second quarter-plan, of variable z for the third quarter-plane and the fourth quarter-plane, respectively, all aliasing errors caused by discrete Fourier transform (DFT) are avoided.
