This study focused on the number of story to obtain zero energy apartment in Seoul through the intensification of energy performance of apartment in each stage and supply of solar energy generation. A 15-story building with four 85㎡ households in each floor, the most common format of flat-type apartment in Korea was selected as the subject of study. The building energy representing zero energy was defined by five types of building energy (heating, cooling, hot water, ventilation, and lighting) based on the ‘Building Energy Efficiency Rating Standard’ of Korea and EPBD standards. It was assumed that the building’s energy performance is enhanced in each stage, and the required energy was limited to the supply of solar energy that is highly applicable to the apartment among available new renewable energy. The five types of energy consumed by apartment in each stage were calculated based on the heat transmittance in each section of the building among the valued notified in ‘Environment-friendly Housing Construction Standard and Performance.’ For the energy required for heating and cooling, the primary energy consumption was calculated based on ISO 13790 and DIN V 18599 parameters. The number of apartment story at which the volume of solar energy generation and the volume of five types of energy required by the building are balanced off to zero was studied. The ‘Building Energy Efficiency Rating System Operation Regulation’ is evaluated by five types of building primary energy use. The number of story to obtain zero energy apartment through the solar generation on the roof and 50% of south spandrel generation is 22-story. According to the research, by the end of 2025 when zero energy is mandatory, 22-story apartment Is obtainable when solar energy generation is installed on the roof and the half size of south spanderal. Even 52-story apartment is obtainable when east and west wall are considered as well.

We analyzed and compared the cooling/heating energy demand and cost of nine households of different positions in a passive house Apartment. To do this, the Passive House Planning Package(PHPP) was used on Building 102 of the Net Zero Energy Housing Complex located in Hagye-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul, Korea. For the heating energy demand, it was analyzed that the middle floor and the first floor have the lowest and highest demands, respectively, and the highest demand was about twice as the lowest. On the same floor, the units in the middle had the lowest demand, while the units on the right and left of the building had little difference. For the cooling energy demand, the higher floors had higher demand, and the highest cooling energy demand was about 40% higher than the lowest. There was not much difference between the units on the same floor when it comes to cooling energy. By analyzing the cooling and heating costs of each household, we concluded that the household with the highest electricity bills payed about 50% higher cost than the one with the lowest bills.
