The sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is a commercially valuable aquaculture species in Korea. Aquaculture species require specific nursery culture conditions to increase survival and growth rates. Sea cucumbers hibernate during the high temperatures of summer and during the low temperatures of winter, and suboptimal temperature conditions decrease sea cucumber growth and survival rates. The natural South Korean environment is very unfavorable for culturing sea cucumber; therefore, developing a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) capable of breeding and growing sea cucumber year-round is necessary. The aim of this study was to investigate growth performance of juvenile sea cucumber in a RAS. Growth and survival rates of juvenile sea cucumber were high during our 24-week experiment. Sea cucumber survival rates were 87.8-93.3%, and specific growth rates were 0.4689-0.7846.

This study determined the level of fermented soybean meal (FSM) that could be substituted for fish meal in the diet for parrot fish Oplegnathus fasciatus. Fish meal (FM) was used the sole protein source in the control diet. FSM was substituted for 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of the fish meal in the experimental diets. The FSM resulted in increased crude protein, crude fat, and crude ash, but decreased crude fiber. The methionine and tryptophan contents in the FSM increased, while lysine and threonine decreased. The 18:2n-6 fatty acid content decreased from 55.30% to 28.67%. Fermentation increased 20:5n-3 (EPA) and 22:6n-3 (DHA) by 2.03% and 15.54%, respectively, although the differ-ences were not significant. Based on growth performance, we concluded that FSM could replace up to 60% of FM for the maximum growth of juvenile parrot fish.

The quality and quantity of food organisms in fish seed production are important. The marine microalgae Nanno-chloropsis oculata are used as initial food organisms in the field. We investigated the effects of salinity(0,10,20,30,40 and 50 psu) on the lipid and fatty acid composition of N. oculata. Cultivation of N. oculata at varying salinities showed the highest growth rate at 20 psu. Total lipid content ranged from 17.26 to 18.63% at salinities from 0 to 50psu). The nonpolar lipid content increased markedly at 30 psu and was highest at 15.55%. The polar lipid content was lowest at 30 psu, by 84.45%. It was also found that the omega-3 and EPA contents were invesrsely proportional to salt concentration. For the polar and nonpolar lipid compositions, there was no singnificant effect of salinity. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid content especially the content of EPA in the seawater larvae is the essential fatty acid in this food organism. It is thus advantageous to culture N. oculata at 20 psu.

역공학의 한 방법으로 엑스선 전산 단층촬영 장치에서 획득한 삼차원 데이터를 CAD(computeraided design) 데이터로 변환하여 쾌속조형 모델을 제작할 수 있고, 또한 삼차원 가시화를 통해 피검사체의 오차를 확인하고 분석할 수 있는 알고리즘들에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 GUI(graphical user interface) 기반의 소프트웨어를 개발하였다. 개발한 소프트웨어의 검증을 위하여 산업 및 의료용 샘플들에 대한 전산 단층촬영 스캐닝을 수행하고 CAD 데이터 변환 및 컴퓨터 원용 결함진단 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 이를 통해 컴퓨터 원용 결함진단의 산업 및 의료분야 적용 가능성을 확인하였다. We have developed software for converting the volumetric voxel data obtained from X-ray computed tomography(CT) into computer-aided design(CAD) data. The developed software can used for non-destructive testing and evaluation, reverse engineering, and rapid prototyping, etc. The main algorithms employed in the software are image reconstruction, volume rendering, segmentation, and mesh data generation. The feasibility of the developed software is demonstrated with the CT data of human maxilla and mandible bones.

We have developed a cost-effective micro-tomography (micro-CT) system. The system consists of an x-ray source with small focus spot, an object (or subject) jig, and an x-ray imaging detector. A computer-controlled rotation system was adopted in the object jig to achieve a cone-beam mode scan. The core of the system is an x-ray imaging detector. Since imaging performance of the detector is mostly responsible for the resultant image quality and eventually determines the quality of a tomogram, characterization of the imaging performance of the detector is an important issue for optimizing the design of the imaging system. We have evaluated the imaging characteristics of the detector in terms of modulation-transfer function (MTF), noise-power spectrum (NPS), and detective quantum efficiency (DQE). The details of experimental results will be discussed with the system's own limitations. The potential performance of the system is demonstrated with the initially acquired test images.
