In this paper, bullet proof materials and their test methods are reviewed. Bullet proof materials are strong enough to prevent bullets passing through. These materials have various energy absorption mechanisms to stop the penetration, such as high yield stress, high hardness, and high toughness. Generally, bullet proof devices are designed to absorb and dissipate the kinetic energy of a very concentrated mass. Mechanical engineers are continually improving the design of bullet proof helmets and vests to make them less penetrable, lighter, and more comfortable. According to internet search, we found the following well-known companies which produce bullet proof materials. They are Dyneema of DSM Netherlands, Spectra of Honey Well USA, Kevlar of DuPont USA, and Twaron of Akzo Nobel Netherlands. Around the world, there are different ballistic standards that define the weapons and ammunition that are considered a threat in a given geographic area. In this study, the NIJ Standard 0101.04 is specially discussed. 「NIJ Standard 0101.04」 is a standard for ballistic resistance of personal body armor developed by the National Institute of Justice(NIJ), US Department of Justice.
