A new gasoline internal combustion engine was designed and built by improving the cranking mechanism. Numerical simulations were also performed to optimize the cranking mechanism to achieve both a high compression ratio operation without knocking and a high thermal efficiency operation. As a result, a special cranking mechanism was considered to make a rapid piston motion near TDC, leading to less heat loss and also a tolerance for knocking limit. To evaluate this new concept, a leaf-shaped gear system was employed in a test engine. As a result, indicated thermal efficiency with the gear system in compression ratio of 12 was improved by 12% compared to a conventional engine with compression ratio of 10. Moreover, the exhaust gas emissions of HC and NOx were much reduced

In case of conventional speed humps, there are problems of grounding because of the induced heavy pitching motion for the buses especially. Therefore it is strongly needed to new vehicle speed reduction schemes. It will be thought that speed cushions do not generally cause excessive discomfort to passengers of large buses, or excessive discomfort to emergency vehicles such as fire service vehicles or ambulances. To optimize the shape of speed cushion which is replaced with the conventional speed humps, the specifications of the domestic vehicles are surveyed. Based on these survey results, several types of speed cushions are designed and the vertical acceleration data are acquired through the 3D-accelerometers. Two-types of design with heights of 75 or 100 ㎜, plateau width of 1400 ㎜, plateau length of 2400 ㎜, ramp slope of 1-in-8 and side slope of 1-in-4 would give the least effect on buses while still causing discomfort for car occupants.

The main purpose of this study is a development of safety evaluation technique of regenerative braking system. For development of safety evaluation technique of regenerative braking system, it has been carried out system analysis for two hybrid electric vehicles equipped with regenerative braking system. In order to determine the applicability of Korea vehicle safety regulation, it has been tested brake safety performance test according to Korea vehicle safety regulation. During the braking test, some problems were revealed. Toyota prius regenerative braking system has unique control logic to improve the fuel efficiency and braking transient region was found. Current Korea vehicle safety regulation has limitations to evaluate above system. In addition, this paper compares two kinds of regulations(ECE Reg. No. 13H and FMVSS No. 135) including regenerative braking system. The results of this paper will be used for the amendment of Korea vehicle safety regulation.

As the ESC become more affordable, the research regarding the performance appraisal method of the ESC is actively advanced. The research was spearheaded by the UN/ECE/WP29 and ISO. Specially, the United States established a ESC efficiency requirements with the FMVSS. And the UN/ECE/WP29 is in the process of propelling the Global Technical Regulation establishment of the ESC. Republic of Korea is the member of U.N. and ISO that participates in the wide range of international meetings. This paper describes vehicle-test results for establishment of the Korean Standards, carrying out actual test to verify the determination of dwell time, Max. steering wheel angle input and the proposed measuring method of lateral displacement and to propose the additional evaluation criteria of ESC efficiency.

This paper provides an overview of the Korea Brake NCAP results and test procedure from 2001 to 2005 and compares Korea NCAP procedure with that of other country(US, Japan). Four factors of measuring stop distance reveal disturbances of the precise measuring stopping distance. For the tire bed-in procedure, ABS full cycling stops over the 20 times lead to a convergence of stopping distance. For the effective management of the test surface, Reduction of the test surface temperature range and the measuring of the peak friction coefficient are needed to reduce the brake test errors. also, the new rate of pedal application is defined and initial brake temperature is suggested same test condition of US and Japan.
