In order to more closely examine a metal vapor arc in a vacuum environment, some basic studies have been done using by measurements as well as by computations since 1920's. However, the complex phenomena related to a vacuum arc have been making a difficulty to understand the fundamental processes inside. In this study, the vacuum arc phenomena with an axial magnetic field (AMF) were investigated by using a coupled method between heat flow and electromagnetics, and analyzed the plasma characteristics between the electrodes with the constriction effect of a vacuum arc. The inhibition effect of AMF on the vacuum arc constriction is also analysed. The model electrode is the cup-type AMF, which is resulted in a bell-shaped field, and is calculated by commercial packages, ANSYS and PHOENICS, for electromagnetic and flow fields, respectively. Results of thermal-fluid and electromagnetic fields are depicted graphically.
