The TMD (tuned mass damper) is modeled with only three parameters: mass, critical dampering ratio, and natural frequency; and does not take the internal friction into account. Thus, it is necessary to check the TMD’s friction during the design and fabrication stage to analyze more accurate performance of the TMD. This study suggests a method to identify the viscous damping and friction damping simultaneously from the free vibration response (displacement or acceleration) of the system. For the verification of the proposed method, simulations on TMD responses were performed to get displacement and acceleration of the TMD in free vibration, which were used to identify the viscous damping and friction damping by applying the proposed method. The identified values have shown to be almost the same as the assumption for the simulation, and it can be concluded that the friction damping and the viscous damping can be identified simultaneously from the free vibration responses of the TMD.
