The reduction and diffusion process(R-D process) is an economical way to produce the functional materials which contain rare-earth elements and has been applied to the production of rare-earth magnet meterials(SmCo_5. Nd_(15)Fe_(77)B_8), magneto-optical(MO) target materials and hydrogen storage alloy, etc. However, because of difficult to control of the final composition, the R-D process has not been applied to production of the 2-17 type rare earth permanent magnet materials which contain several elements. Therefore, this work was as a basic study for the production of the 2-17 type rare earth permanent materials with composition Sm(Co_(0.72)Fe_(0.21)Cu_(0.05)Zr_(0.03))_(7.9) by the R-D process, the following were mainy examined ; the amount of metallic calcium as a reductant, homogenization condition of the alloy after the R-D reaction, masuring of magnetic properties of the sample after step aging. The sample prepared by the R-D process contained a little more oxygen than that prepared by the melting method, however, showed almost the same magnetic properties.
환원ㆍ확산법에 의한Sm₂Co계 영구자석 재료의 제조에 있어서 조성제어에 관한 연구

The reduction-diffusion(R-D process) is an economical way of producing funtional materials which contain rare-earth elements and has been applied to the production of magnet meterials, hydrogen storage alloys, etc. However, The process has not been applied to the production of materials having various alloying elements or strictly controlled composition, because conpositions of of the R-D process products are controlled by diffusion in solid phase. This report describes the way of controlling the final composition of the Sm₂Co type (2-17type) rare-earth magnet material in the process which contains Fe, Cu and Zr besides Sm and Co. The magnetic properties were measured at room temperature with the vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM) in the maximum pulsed field of about 15kOe that samples were prepared by the melting method and R-D process.

The growth of intermetallic compounds of rare earth-transition metal has been investigated by the reduction process. Nd was diffused into Fe block and made intermetallic compounds, only the Nd₂Fe17 diffusion layer was obtained for the Nd-Fe system. It was shown that the growth rate of intermetallic compounes was controlled by diffusion. Apprarent activation energy for the diffusion of Nd was 28.5Kcal/mol through arrhenius plots.

It has been reported that Sm₂Fe??Nx compound has excellent magnetic properties and is suitable for making high performance permanent magnets. Attempts have been made to prepare the Sm₂Fe17 powders. By using the RD method, it is possible to omit the subsequent homogenization treatment for eliminating the magnetically soft α-Fe phase. The main objective of this study is attainment of the specified composition in the final alloy product. The RD method might be a cost effective way for mass producing the starting materials of Sm₂Fe??Nx magnets.

This report describes the way of controlling the final composition of the Tb22Fe70Co8 type photomagnetic material.
