The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of school children`s empathy and self-esteem on the relationship between perceived parenting attitude and group bullying and the possible mediating effects of their empathy and self-esteem on the relationship between perceived parenting attitude and group bullying. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, perceived affectional and autonomous parenting attitudes were positively correlated to empathy and self-esteem, and empathy and self- esteem had a negative correlation to being bullied and bullying behavior. Second, cognitive empathy had a mediating effect on the relationship between perceived affectional/autonomous parenting attitudes and being bullied/bullying behavior. Affective empathy had a mediating effect on the relationship between bullying behavior and affectional parenting attitude when the bullying behavior was regarded as a dependent variable. Third, as for the relationship between parenting attitude and being bullied/bullying behavior, self-esteem had mediating effects on the relationship of affectional paternal attitude, autonomous paternal attitude, affectional maternal attitude and autonomous maternal attitude to being bullied. When bullying behavior was a dependent variable, however, that had a mediating effect on the relationship between autonomous paternal attitude and autonomous maternal attitude.
